PURPOSE: The retina contains a number of vasoactive neuropeptides and corresponding receptors, but the role of these neuropeptides for tone regulation of retinal arterioles has not been studied in detail.

Diagnosis of plus disease is crucial for timely treatment and management of retinopathy of prematurity. An indicator of the presence of plus disease is an increase in the tortuosity of blood vessels in the retina. In this work, we propose a new angle-variation-based measure for quantification of tortuosity in retinal fundus images of preterm infants. The methods include the use of Gabor filters to detect vessels as well as to obtain their orientation at each pixel. A spontaneous intraorbital arteriovenous fistula is an extremely rare phenomenon. More commonly, arteriovenous fistulas occur spontaneously as carotid cavernous fistulas and dural cavernous fistulas or are secondary to trauma. Surgical approaches vary widely and each carries their own set of potential problems. The purpose of this single case report was to provide an example of a successful treatment of a rare, spontaneous intraorbital vascular fistula.

A young woman with headaches displayed ophthalmoscopic features suggestive of papilledema. MRI showed no intracranial abnormalities but demonstrated oblique insertion of the optic nerve into the left globe and posterior nasal flattening of the left globe, features consistent with congenitally tilted optic discs. This is the second report to show that orbital MRI can demonstrate this phenomenon.

The efficiency of differentiated conservative treatment of ocular ischemic syndrome (OIS) was studied. In acute course, drugs improving bloodflow and blood rheology were prescribed. In patients with primary chronic pattern of the syndrome, drugs correcting microcirculation, transcapillary metabolism, and improving metabolism in ischemic tissues were used. Following the initial report of the clinical use of plasminogen activators (PAs) in cerebrovascular thrombosis in 1958, interest in the efficacy of this approach accelerated only when the need for acute intervention in stroke was recognized. The use of PAs in acute ischemic stroke is based on the observation that approximately 80-90% of focal cerebral ischemic events presenting as strokes within 8 hr of symptom onset are due to atherothrombotic and embolic occlusions.

A local cooling test produces a typical flow stop reaction in nailfold capillaries in 88% of patients with Raynaud's phenomenon, but only in 15% of healthy controls. A stop reaction occurred in 9 of 12 patients with Prinzmetal variant angina, exceeding significantly that in 2 of 12 matched control subjects. Also in patients with reversible visual disorders presumably due to vasospasm, the test resulted in a stop reaction in 16 of 25 cases exceeding that in control. A retrospective study of 45 patients with low-tension glaucoma revealed the mean age at diagnosis to be 66 years. AIMS: Haptoglobin (HP) phenotype has been reported to modulate fenofibrate benefit on coronary artery disease in type 2 diabetes. It is unknown whether HP phenotype and levels modulate fenofibrate benefit on sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy (STDR).
METHODS: In plasma from 8,047 Australasian adults with type 2 diabetes in the FIELD trial, HP phenotype was determined, and HP levels were measured at baseline and after six-week fenofibrate run-in.
