PURPOSE: Nephrolithiasis disproportionately affects white patients. However, recent studies propose an increase in the incidence of stone disease in nonwhite populations. We compared the metabolic risk factors of ethnically disparate stone formers from the same geographic region.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of 1,141 patients identified 98 (9%) nonwhite stone formers. Of these individuals 60 underwent a comprehensive metabolic evaluation, comprising 44 black, 8 Asian and 8 Hispanic patients. A similar sex and age matched group of 66 white stone forming patients were also iden

PURPOSE: The ideal imaging study for evaluation of the upper urinary tract in patients with microhematuria has been debated. We prospectively compared the diagnostic yield of computerized tomography (CT) to excretory urography (IVP) in the initial evaluation of asymptomatic microhematuria.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between December 1998 and June 2001, 115 patients presenting with asymptomatic microhematuria underwent CT and IVP before cystoscopy. Helical CT images with 5 mm. adrenal and kidney slices with and without contrast material were followed by delayed 5 mm. ureteral contrast images throu

PURPOSE: About 40% of patients with nephrolithiasis have idiopathic hypercalciuria, sometimes associated with a family history of kidney stones. In these families, little is known about the frequency of, and risk factors for, stone formation among hypercalciuric patients. We therefore conducted a prospective study of 216 subjects from 33 families with idiopathic hypercalciuria.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We recorded the age, weight, and history of calcium stones in all subjects, and measured 24-hour urine volume and excretion of calcium, uric acid, sodium, magnesium, urea, citrate, phosphate, and

AIMS: Coagulation activation is a recognized complication of cancer in which increased tissue factor (TF) is implicated. TF can be detected in urine (uTF). This study assesses uTF levels in benign and malignant urological disease and correlates the results with conventional markers of tumour progression.
METHODS: Using a simple and reproducible kinetic chromogenic assay, we determined uTF levels in controls (normal volunteers (n = 57) and patients with renal stones (n = 30)), benign and malignant bladder (n = 75) or prostate (n = 106) disease and in patients with or without recurrent bladder

The amount of oral ascorbic acid that a patient can tolerate without diarrhea, increases somewhat proportionately to the "toxicity" of his disease. Clinically, in a disease ameliorated by ascorbate, there is a suppression of symptoms only with very high doses and approximately to that extent which a nonrate-limited, antioxidant free radical scavenger, might be expected to affect that disease process if all harmful free radicals and highly reactive oxidizing substances were quenched. In most pathologic processes, the rate at which free radicals and highly reactive oxidants are produced, exceeds

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Kidney stone disease (KSD), a significant health care problem within both developed and developing countries, has been associated with genetic risk factors. An association between physical activity and KSD risk also has been hypothesized, but studies have yielded inconsistent findings. This study investigated the association between the intensity of physical activity and the incidence of KSD accounting for genetic risk.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: A total of 80,473 participants from the UK Biobank Study.
EXPOSURE: Physical activity

In this study, we aimed to compare clinical and technical outcomes between pediatric patients who underwent percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) under fluoroscopy (FL) and those that underwent this procedure under FL with ultrasound assistance (FLUSA). The data of 66 PCNL patients were analyzed retrospectively. Renal puncture was successful in 22 patients in the FLUSA group and 44 patients in the FL group. In all cases, FL was used for tract dilation and confirmation of ureteral catheter positioning at the beginning of the procedure. The sample consisted of 46 males and 20 females with a mean a
