Models for Predicting Velopharyngeal Competence Based on Speech and Resonance Errors and Velopharyngeal Area Estimation.

OBJECTIVE: To develop tools for predicting velopharyngeal competence (VPC) based on auditory-perceptual assessment and its correlation with objective measures of velopharyngeal orifice area. DESIGN: Methodological study. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: Sixty-two patients with repaired cleft palate, aged 6 to 45 years, underwent aerodynamic evaluation by means of the pressure-flow technique and audiovisual recording of speech samples. Three experienced speech-language pathologists analysed the speech samples by rating the following resonance, visual, and speech variables: hypernasality, audible nas

Predicting postpartum haemorrhage: A systematic review of prognostic models.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) remains a leading cause of maternal mortality and morbidity worldwide, and the rate is increasing. Using a reliable predictive model could identify those at risk, support management and treatment, and improve maternal outcomes. AIMS: To systematically identify and appraise existing prognostic models for PPH and ascertain suitability for clinical use. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched using combinations of terms and synonyms, including 'postpartum haemorrhage', 'prognostic model', and 'risk factors'.

A 100-Year Review: Methods and impact of genetic selection in dairy cattle-From daughter-dam comparisons to deep learning algorithms.

In the early 1900s, breed society herdbooks had been established and milk-recording programs were in their infancy. Farmers wanted to improve the productivity of their cattle, but the foundations of population genetics, quantitative genetics, and animal breeding had not been laid. Early animal breeders struggled to identify genetically superior families using performance records that were influenced by local environmental conditions and herd-specific management practices. Daughter-dam comparisons were used for more than 30 yr and, although genetic progress was minimal, the attention given to p

Hemodynamics in Normal and Diseased Livers: Application of Image-Based Computational Models.

This investigation demonstrates the utility of image-based computational models in portal venous hemodynamics. The long-term objective is to develop methodologies based upon noninvasive imaging and hemodynamic computational models for blood flow in major vessels of the liver that will significantly augment and improve current practices in clinical care. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) were used to investigate liver hemodynamics. MRI data were obtained in 7 healthy subjects and 4 patients diagnosed with cirrhosis, and computational models were developed a

A partially linear tree-based regression model for assessing complex joint gene-gene and gene-environment effects.

The success of genetic dissection of complex diseases may greatly benefit from judicious exploration of joint gene effects, which, in turn, critically depends on the power of statistical tools. Standard regression models are convenient for assessing main effects and low-order gene-gene interactions but not for exploring complex higher-order interactions. Tree-based methodology is an attractive alternative for disentangling possible interactions, but it has difficulty in modeling additive main effects. This work proposes a new class of semiparametric regression models, termed partially linear t

Usefulness of genetic polymorphisms and conventional risk factors to predict coronary heart disease in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an autosomal dominant disorder with an associated high risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). The considerable variation in age of onset of CHD in patients with FH is believed to arise from conventional risk factors, as well as genetic variation other than in the low-density lipoprotein receptor gene. The degree to which currently known genetic variants can improve the prediction of CHD risk beyond conventional risk factors in this disorder was investigated. Fourteen genetic variants recently identified for association with CHD in a Dutch FH population were

Comparison of different approaches to manage multi-site magnetic resonance spectroscopy clinical data analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The effects caused by differences in data acquisition can be substantial and may impact data interpretation in multi-site/scanner studies using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). Given the increasing use of multi-site studies, a better understanding of how to account for different scanners is needed. Using data from a concussion population, we compare ComBat harmonization with different statistical methods in controlling for site, vendor, and scanner as covariates to determine how to best control for multi-site data. METHODS: The data for the current study included 545 MRS d

Comparing Bayesian early stopping boundaries for phase II clinical trials.

When designing phase II clinical trials, it is important to construct interim monitoring rules that achieve a balance between reliable early stopping for futility or safety and maintaining a high true positive probability (TPP), which is the probability of not stopping if the new treatment is truly safe and effective. We define and compare several methods for specifying early stopping boundaries as functions of interim sample size, rather than as fixed cut-offs, using Bayesian posterior probabilities as decision criteria. We consider boundaries with constant, linear, or exponential shapes. For

Alternative Models of DSM-5 Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Portuguese Adolescents Exposed to Trauma and Childhood Adversity.

The factor structure of DSM-5 posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been extensively debated, with evidence supporting the recently proposed seven-factor hybrid model. However, few studies examining PTSD symptom structure have assessed the implications of these proposed models on diagnostic criteria and PTSD prevalence. In the present study, we examined seven alternative DSM-5 PTSD models within a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), using the Child PTSD Symptom Scale-Self-Report for DSM-5 (CPSS-5). Additionally, we generated prevalence rates for each of the seven models by using a symptom-b

Modelling individual vulnerability to sexually transmitted infections to optimise intervention strategies: analysis of surveillance data from Kalamazoo County, Michigan, USA.

OBJECTIVE: We modelled individual vulnerability to STI using personal history of infection and neighbourhood characteristics. METHODS: Retrospective chlamydia and gonorrhoea data of reported confirmed cases from Kalamazoo County, Michigan for 2012 through 2014 were analysed. Unique IDs were generated from the surveillance data in collaboration with local health officials to track the individual STI histories. We then examine the concept that individuals with similar STI histories form a 'peer' group. These peer group include: (1) individuals with a single chlamydia; (2) individuals with singl

Associations between obsessive-compulsive classes and pathological gambling in a national cohort of male twins.

IMPORTANCE: Because of shared characteristics, pathological gambling (PG) has been variously conceptualized as an obsessive-compulsive (OC) spectrum disorder or as an addictive disorder. Prior community-based studies have not systematically determined the association between PG and OC features and whether common genetic factors contribute to both conditions. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association and genetic correlation between PG and OC features. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We performed a latent class analysis (LCA) of OC features, cross-sectional tests of association, and classic twi

Concordance between personality disorder assessment methods.

BACKGROUND: Studies have criticized the low level of agreement between the various methods of personality disorder (PD) assessment. This is an important issue for research and clinical purposes. METHOD: Seven hundred and forty-two participants in the Hopkins Epidemiology of Personality Disorders Study (HEPS) were assessed on two occasions using the Personality Disorder Schedule (PDS) and the International Personality Disorder Examination (IPDE). The concordance between the two diagnostic methods for all DSM-IV PDs was assessed using standard methods and also two item response analytic approac

Predominance of symptoms over time in early-onset psychosis: a principal component factor analysis of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale.

BACKGROUND: Early-onset psychosis is a symptomatically nonspecific and heterogeneous entity composed of several diagnoses. This study examined the dimensional structure of symptoms and the temporal stability of this structure during a 6-month follow-up. METHOD: A principal component factor analysis of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale was conducted at baseline, 4 weeks, and 6 months in a sample of 99 first-episode psychotic patients (mean age = 15.5 years). RESULTS: The factor analysis produced a 5-dimension solution (Positive, Negative, Depression, Cognitive, Hostility) that explaine

Subjectively measured ejaculation latency time and its association with different sexual activities while controlling for age and relationship length.

INTRODUCTION: Recently, attempts to formulate valid and suitable definitions for (different subcategories of) premature ejaculation have resulted in substantial progress in the pursuit to gain knowledge about ejaculatory function. However, the association between ejaculatory dysfunction and different types of sexual activities has yet to be thoroughly investigated, and (due to conflicting results between studies) the potential effects of age and relationship length still need to be taken into account. AIM: The aim of this study is to investigate the associations of age, relationship length, f

Statistical analysis of the long-term effects of recombinant human deoxyribonuclease on pulmonary function in cystic fibrosis patients.

The problem of evaluating the long-term effects of recombinant human deoxyribonuclease (rhDNase) on forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients was considered. A two-stage mixed effects model, incorporating relevant predictive variables, captured the diverse patterns of decline of FEV1 for patients with different demographic characteristics. Based on the results of modeling the dropout process, it is clear that the probability of early dropout was closely related to patient's responsiveness to rhDNase treatment. Failure to consider the existence of informativ

Assessing drug effect from distributional data: A population approach with application to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy treatment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) treatment, muscle fiber size can be considered as an indicator of muscle health and function. In particular, the statistical distribution of fibers cross-sectional areas (CSAs) has been used as quantitative efficacy endpoint. For each patient, assessment of treatment effect relies on the comparison of pre- and post-treatment biopsies. Since biopsies provide "distributional data", i.e. empirical distributions of fibers CSA, the comparison must be carried out between the empirical pre- and post-treatment distributions. METHODS: Here

The effect of tranexamic acid on the risk of death and hysterectomy in women with post-partum haemorrhage: statistical analysis plan for the WOMAN trial.

BACKGROUND: Severe haemorrhage is a leading cause of maternal death worldwide. Most haemorrhage deaths occur soon after childbirth. Severe post-partum bleeding is sometimes managed by the surgical removal of the uterus (hysterectomy). Death and hysterectomy are important health consequences of post-partum haemorrhage, and clinical trials of interventions aimed at preventing these outcomes are needed. METHODS: The World Maternal Antifibrinolytic trial aims to determine the effect of tranexamic acid on death, hysterectomy and other health outcomes in women with post-partum haemorrhage. It is an

Dimensions of Oppositional Defiant Disorder in young children: heterotypic continuity with anxiety and depression.

There are distinct dimensions of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) that have been associated with symptoms of other disorders (heterotypic continuity). The present study compared the heterotypic continuity of a two-factor (Pitt-2) model and the three-factor model incorporated into DSM-5 with symptoms of anxiety and depression. Participants were a diverse community sample of 796 children (38.8 % minority, 49.1 % boys) assessed at ages 4, 5 and 6 years. Symptoms were assessed with the dimensional scales of the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children-Young Child version and the Child Symptom
