Deep-Hipo: Multi-scale receptive field deep learning for histopathological image analysis.

Digitizing whole-slide imaging in digital pathology has led to the advancement of computer-aided tissue examination using machine learning techniques, especially convolutional neural networks. A number of convolutional neural network-based methodologies have been proposed to accurately analyze histopathological images for cancer detection, risk prediction, and cancer subtype classification. Most existing methods have conducted patch-based examinations, due to the extremely large size of histopathological images. However, patches of a small window often do not contain sufficient information or

The impact of the suppression of highly connected protein interactions on the corona virus infection.

Several highly effective Covid-19 vaccines are in emergency use, although more-infectious coronavirus strains, could delay the end of the pandemic even further. Because of this, it is highly desirable to develop fast antiviral drug treatments to accelerate the lasting immunity against the virus. From a theoretical perspective, computational approaches are useful tools for antiviral drug development based on the data analysis of gene expression, chemical structure, molecular pathway, and protein interaction mapping. This work studies the structural stability of virus-host interactome networks b

Connectome analysis of a cerebellum-like circuit for sensory prediction.

Many forms of learning, for example, learning a model of the environment or a motor skill, rely on synaptic plasticity that is widely distributed across cell types and network stages. Understanding how this distributed plasticity functions is a central challenge in neuroscience1-5. Here we use connectomics to map the cell types and synaptic connections underlying a form of multi-layer continual learning that cancels predictable sensory responses in a cerebellum-like structure in electric fish6,7. Our analysis shows inhibitory and disinhibitory sensory input pathways that fulfil theoretical req

Effects of repetitive scanning ultrasound on the intraneuronal dendritic signalling of CA1 pyramidal neurons.

INTRODUCTION: Neural development is regulated by several spatiotemporally changing factors, which are essential for enabling neurons to develop functional networks, during early developmental stages. Additionally, external physical stimuli, like scanning prenatal ultrasound (US) examination, may influence neural development. Aim of our study is to examine potential consequences of diagnostic level ultrasound exposure during the early phase of hippocampal CA1 neural network development by using computational models. METHODS: Using in silico modelling, this study explores and compares multiple

A feed forward neural network for classification of bull's-eye myocardial perfusion images.

Identification of hypoperfused areas in myocardial perfusion single-photon emission tomography studies can be aided by bull's-eye representation of raw counts, lesion extent and lesion severity, the latter two being produced by comparison of the raw bull's-eye data with a normal data base. An artificial intelligence technique which is presently becoming widely popular and which is particularly suitable for pattern recognition is that of artificial neural network. We have studied the ability of feed forward neural networks to extract patterns from bull's-eye data by assessing their capability t

"Engineering Sense": Donald Hebb, Nathaniel Rochester, and the Origins of Deep Learning.

This paper examines the origins of the concept of "deep learning," and traces it to its origins in the ideas of the psychologist Donald Olding Hebb. In the 1930s, Hebb formulated a theory of brain function that was meant to explain the surprising intelligence scores of brain surgery patients. This paper then traces how Hebb's cell assembly theory found its way into the earliest attempts by the IBM engineer Nathanial Rochester to engineer a learning computer in the 1950s. Finally, I examined the legacy of this encounter between neurophysiology and engineering for modern artificial intelligence

Neural encoding of real world face perception.

Social perception unfolds as we freely interact with people around us. We investigated the neural basis of real world face perception using multi electrode intracranial recordings in humans during spontaneous interactions with friends, family, and others. Computational models reconstructed the faces participants looked at during natural interactions, including facial expressions and motion, from brain activity alone. The results highlighted a critical role for the social vision pathway, a network of areas spanning parietal, temporal, and occipital cortex. This network was more sharply tuned to

Mixture-of-Experts Electroencephalography-Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Fusion for Interpretable Computer-Assisted Brain Disorder Diagnosis.

Electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) provide complementary information about brain function, and have shown significant promise in detecting functional abnormalities in various brain disorders. However, the distinct signal characteristics and disparate representational spaces of EEG and fMRI pose severe challenges to effective multimodal fusion, thereby hindering accurate computer-assisted diagnosis of brain disorders with conventional fixed models. This study presents Brain Mixture-of-Experts (BrainMoE), an adaptive and interpretable EEG-fMRI fusion fr

Moment-Consistent Contrastive CycleGAN for Cross-Domain Pancreatic Image Segmentation.

CT and MR are currently the most common imaging techniques for pancreatic cancer diagnosis. Accurate segmentation of the pancreas in CT and MR images can provide significant help in the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer. Traditional supervised segmentation methods require a large number of labeled CT and MR training data, which is usually time-consuming and laborious. Meanwhile, due to domain shift, traditional segmentation networks are difficult to be deployed on different imaging modality datasets. Cross-domain segmentation can utilize labeled source domain data to assist unlabele

BACKGROUND:: Efficient and accurate delineation of organs at risk (OARs) is a critical procedure for treatment planning and dose evaluation. Deep learning-based auto-segmentation of OARs has shown promising results and is increasingly being used in radiation therapy. However, existing deep learning-based auto-segmentation approaches face two challenges in clinical practice: generalizability and human-AI interaction. A generalizable and promptable auto-segmentation model, which segments OARs of multiple disease sites simultaneously and supports on-the-fly human-AI interaction, can significantly

Automatic Detection and Classification of Lung Nodules in CT Image Using Optimized Neuro Fuzzy Classifier with Cuckoo Search Algorithm.

The Lung nodules are very important to indicate the lung cancer, and its early detection enables timely treatment and increases the survival rate of patient. Even though lots of works are done in this area, still improvement in accuracy is required for improving the survival rate of the patient. The proposed method can classify the stages of lung cancer in addition to the detection of lung nodules. There are two parts in the proposed method, the first part is used for classifying normal/abnormal and second part is used for classifying stages of lung cancer. Totally 10 features from the lung re

Te/Fe3GaTe2 1D-2D Ferroelectric Heterojunction Transistors Enabling Ultrafast Multi-State Switching for Workpiece Surface Defect Inspection.

Ferroelectric field-effect transistors, which rely on ferroelectric polarization reversal to modulate the channel resistance, hold great promise for nonvolatile memory and neuromorphic computing. The polarization switching dynamics are critical for achieving high-speed, high-bit-density neuromorphic hardware. Here, we report a 1D-2D asymmetric heterojunction composed of a single-element tellurium (Te) nanowire and a magnetic metal, Fe3GaTe2. Piezoresponse force microscopy reveals reversible polarization switching at room temperature. Utilizing this ferroelectric heterojunction, we construct fe

Learning neural dynamics through instructive signals.

Rapid learning is essential for flexible behavior, but its basis in the brain remains unknown. Here we introduce the PRISM plasticity rule, a unifying mechanistic model of three well-established, fast-acting synaptic plasticity rules-in hippocampus, cerebellum and mushroom body-which relies exclusively on pre-synaptic activity and an "instructive signal" from another brain area. Using a multi-region network model we show that guiding PRISM plasticity with instructive signals enables the network to quickly learn extremely flexible nonlinear dynamics underlying behaviorally relevant computations

Ultrafast simulation of large-scale neocortical microcircuitry with biophysically realistic neurons.

Understanding the activity of the mammalian brain requires an integrative knowledge of circuits at distinct scales, ranging from ion channel gating to circuit connectomics. Computational models are regularly employed to understand how multiple parameters contribute synergistically to circuit behavior. However, traditional models of anatomically and biophysically realistic neurons are computationally demanding, especially when scaled to model local circuits. To overcome this limitation, we trained several artificial neural network (ANN) architectures to model the activity of realistic multicomp

Estimation of resting state effective connectivity in epilepsy using direct-directed transfer function.

There has been an increasing demand among neuroscientists to understand the complex network of functionally connected neural assemblies in the human brain. For this purpose, computational EEG research is widely used by researchers due to its remarkable advantage in providing high temporal resolution, and ease of analysis across different frequency bands. Here we analyzed Electrocorticographic (ECoG) signals of electrodes placed on frontal-parietal neocortex brain region of 8 pediatric epileptic patients. In order to evaluate the directed causal relationship among different brain regions, we em

Determining the Optimal Number of MEG Trials: A Machine Learning and Speech Decoding Perspective.

Advancing the knowledge about neural speech mechanisms is critical for developing next-generation, faster brain computer interface to assist in speech communication for the patients with severe neurological conditions (e.g., locked-in syndrome). Among current neuroimaging techniques, Magnetoencephalography (MEG) provides direct representation for the large-scale neural dynamics of underlying cognitive processes based on its optimal spatiotemporal resolution. However, the MEG measured neural signals are smaller in magnitude compared to the background noise and hence, MEG usually suffers from a

The role of quantitative EEG biomarkers in Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment: applications and insights.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the pathological accumulation of amyloid plaques and hyperphosphorylated tau proteins, leading to disruptions in synaptic transmission and neural circuit alterations. Despite advancements in therapies to delay disease progression, there is a pressing need for simple, non-invasive, and accessible biomarkers to evaluate their effectiveness. Quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG), a computational method for quantifying brain electrical activity, is increasingly applied in AD research. We highlight the application of qEEG biomarkers, including power
