Adapted physical activity for hematology inpatients: focus on lean mass gain.

Adapted physical activity (APA) has become an essential asset in the care of patients with cancer. Although its positive impact has mainly been studied regarding quality of life, few studies have focused on changes in lean mass (LM) and its determinants. This study reports the results of an APA program for inpatients in the hematology department of Nice University Hospital (France). Body composition analyses and physical tests were performed at admission and discharge. A total of 123 patients were analyzed with relative LM gain as the primary outcome. Over a median hospitalization duration of

The diagnosis of hypophosphatasia in children as a multidisciplinary effort: an expert opinion.

Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare genetic disorder in which pathogenic variants of the ALPL gene lead to a marked decrease of tissue non-specific alkaline phosphatase (TNSALP) activity. Although HPP is a systemic disorder, its clinical manifestations are more evident on bones, teeth, muscle and central nervous system. The clinical spectrum ranges from severe forms with extreme skeletal deformities, respiratory impairment, seizures, to very mild forms with onset in late adulthood and few clinical signs. The diagnosis can be suspected by measurement of TNSALP activity, but the insufficient awaren

Trends in volumes and survival after hematopoietic cell transplantation in racial/ethnic minorities.

AbstractThere has been an increase in volume as well as an improvement in overall survival (OS) after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) for hematologic disorders. It is unknown if these changes have affected racial/ethnic minorities equally. In this observational study from the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research of 79 904 autologous (auto) and 65 662 allogeneic (allo) HCTs, we examined the volume and rates of change of autoHCT and alloHCT over time and trends in OS in 4 racial/ethnic groups: non-Hispanic Whites (NHWs), non-Hispanic African Americans (NHAAs), a

Renal Response Criteria for Clinical Trials in Amyloid Light Chain Amyloidosis.

Immunoglobin light chain (AL) amyloidosis is a rare disease characterized by organ deposition of amyloid fibrils, most commonly in the heart and kidney. Disease heterogeneity necessitates organ-specific assessment to determine prognosis and response or progression. To facilitate development of new therapies, the Amyloidosis Forum (a public-private partnership between the US Food and Drug Administration and the nonprofit Amyloidosis Research Consortium) held a series of meetings and formed multiple working groups to identify clinical trial end points and analytic strategies. This report summari

Global disparities in drug-related adverse events of patients with multiple myeloma: a pharmacovigilance study.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a complex hematological malignancy of clonal plasma cells driven by alterations to the chromosomal material leading to uncontrolled proliferation in the bone marrow. Ethnic and racial disparities persist in the prevalence, diagnosis, management, and outcomes of MM. These disparities are multifaceted and intersect with various factors, including demographics, geography, socioeconomic status, genetics, and access to healthcare. This study utilized the openFDA human drug adverse events (AEs) to analyze global data pertaining to MM patients and patterns of treatment-relate

Burden of noncommunicable diseases among children and adolescents aged 10-24 years in China, 1990-2019: A population-based study.

China has hundreds of millions of children and adolescents aged 10-24 years, accounting for one-sixth of their total counterparts worldwide. We perform this study to clarify the priority of noncommunicable disease (NCD) control among youth in China via the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019. The highest disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) from NCDs among youth in China remain in mental disorders, while the most increasing incidence is from diabetes and kidney diseases during 1990-2019. Bullying victimization and high BMI are the top risk factors for DALYs from mental disorders and diabete

Applications of coxsackievirus A21 in oncology.

The clinical management of cancer continues to be dominated by macroscopic surgical resection, radiotherapy, and cytotoxic drugs. The major challenge facing oncology is to achieve more selective, less toxic and effective methods of targeting disseminated tumors, a challenge oncolytic virotherapy may be well-placed to meet. Characterization of coxsackievirus A21 (CVA21) receptor-based mechanism of virus internalization and lysis in the last decade has suggested promise for CVA21 as a virotherapy against malignancies which overexpress those receptors. Preclinical studies have demonstrated proof

Central Venous Access Device Complications and Premature Removal in Patients With Haematological Malignancies: A Multi-Site Cohort Study.

BackgroundPatients with haematological malignancies require urgent and reliable venous access for the administration of systemic anticancer therapies (SACTs) commonly via central venous access devices (CVADs). Disease pathophysiology and side effects of SACTs increase the risk of complications during the dwell time and premature removal. CVAD complications are associated with treatment disruption, increased morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to comprehensively describe CVAD performance over a 12-month period in patients with haematological malignancies.MethodsA multi-site cohort study a

Diabetes and obesity: the role of stress in the development of cancer.

Diabesity is a condition where an individual has both diabetes and obesity, which can lead to severe complications including cardiovascular disease, a leading cause of mortality. Recently, cancer has become a leading cause of excess hospitalizations, and both diabetes and obesity are associated with a higher risk of developing several types of cancer. In this review, we propose that chronic stress significantly increases this association. Managing diabetes and obesity is challenging as they both cause significant distress. The relationship between stress and cancer is interconnected, with anxi
