OBJECTIVE: This prospective study assessed the efficacy of the Cochlear™ Osia® 2 System compared to the previous Baha® Attract System in patients with mixed or conductive hearing loss (MHL/CHL).
METHODS: In this prospective case-control study, 10 patients (2 men and 8 women) with MHL/CHL were implanted with the Osia® 2 System. OBJECTIVE: The penetrating electrode auditory brainstem implant (PABI) is an extension of auditory brainstem implant (ABI) technology originally developed for individuals deafened by neurofibromatosis type 2. Whereas the conventional ABI uses surface electrodes on the cochlear nuclei, the PABI uses 8 or 10 penetrating microelectrodes in conjunction with a separate array of 10 or 12 surface electrodes. The Study ABR was conducted before operations, after opening the drum cavity, making the hole in plate of stapes, installing the prosthetic device and at the end of operation. The reduction level of latency V wave and interval III-V and I-V waves are a reliable acknowledgement of the improvement of the hearing at the end of operation.
