This study is aimed at exploring the role of serum fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23), matrix Gla (MGP) and Fetuin-A in the calcium-phosphate metabolism and estimate the value of serum FGF-23, MGP and Fetuin-A levels in predicting osteoporosis in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. AIM: This study investigated the prevalence and contributing factors of loss of bone mineral density after renal transplantation among Turkish patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 70 subjects, namely 50 males and 20 females of overall mean age of 36.94 ± 10.09 years. We measured femoral neck mineral density by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). A T score above -1 was defined as a normal bone mineral density compared with T scores of -1.0 to -2.5 or below -2.5 which were defined as either osteopenia or osteoporosis, respectively.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Low bone mass is an important complication of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), resulting in an increased risk of fractures and reduced mobility. In the present study, we sought to determine the frequency of low bone mass in PBC, and its relationship to disease severity and non-invasive markers of bone turnover.

OBJECTIVE: To study the relationship between bone turnover markers and bone mineral density in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Clodronate is a bisphosphonate used for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis and all conditions characterized by excess bone resorption. We have previously reported that intramuscular (IM) therapy with clodronate at a dose of 100 mg/week displays significant effects on bone mineral density (BMD) although a plateau effect is observed after 1 year of treatment. Previous reports indicate that the densitometric effects of bisphosphonates directly correlate with the drug dosage and suggest that using IM clodronate at doses higher than 100 mg/week may result in improved efficacy.
