BACKGROUND: Thiamethoxam (THM) is a neonicotinoid insecticide used to control different insect pests on fruits, vegetables, and field crops. The misuse and continuous exposure to THM cause many harmful effects on health and the reproductive system.
AIM: This work aims to investigate the efficiency of vitamin C (vit C) in reducing or eliminating the harmful effects of THM on the testes, liver, and kidney of male rats.
METHODS: Forty-eight sexually mature male Wister albino rats (weight: 170-190 g; age: 10-11 weeks) were randomly allocated into six groups (8 males/group). The control group was

Culex pipiens pallens is an important vector of lymphatic filariasis and epidemic encephalitis. Mosquito control is the main strategy used for the prevention of mosquito-borne diseases. Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) is an entomopathogenic bacterium widely used in mosquito control. In this study, we profiled the microbiota and transcriptional response of the larvae of Cx. pipiens pallens exposed to different concentrations of Bti. The results demonstrated that Bti induced a significant effect on both the microbiota and gene expression of Cx. pipiens pallens. Compared to the control g

The ability of sterile males to survive, disperse, find, and mate with wild females is key to the success of sterile insect technique (SIT). The Release of Insects carrying a Dominant Lethal (RIDL) system is a genetics-based SIT strategy for Aedes aegypti. We examine two aspects of insect performance, flight potential (dispersal ability) and teneral energy reserves, by comparing wild-type (WT) males with genetically-modified lines carrying the tetracycline-repressible constructs OX513A and OX3604C. Our results show significant differences in the flight capacity of the modified lines. OX513A ma

Encouraged by the early success of using dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT) against malaria, the World Health Organization (WHO) embarked on the Global Malaria Eradication Program (GMEP) in 1955. Fourteen years later, the campaign was discontinued when it was recognised that eradication was not achievable with the available means in many areas, although the long-term goal remained unchanged. During the GMEP, malaria was permanently eliminated from many regions. In other areas, however, substantial gains were lost in resurgences, sometimes of epidemic proportions. During the 1970s and 1980

Dengue is the most important vector-borne disease in the Americas and threatens the lifes of millions of people in developing countries. Imprecise morbidity and mortality statistics underestimate the magnitude of dengue as a regional health problem. As a result, it is considered a low priority by the health sector with no timely steps for effective control. Dengue is perceived as a problem of 'others' (individually, collectively and institutionally), therefore responsibility for its control is passed on to others (neighbors, the community, municipality, health institutions, or other government

Locomotion can be modified and reinforced through the utilization of sensory feedback. A type of sensory structure, commonly found in the legs of insects, is strain sensors called campaniform sensilla (CS). These are embedded in the rigid cuticle and commonly found in groups and fields, some of which contain a variety of CS sizes and orientations. The CS groups and fields on the legs are consistent across individuals of the same species, but the topography of the local cuticle and the number of sensilla may vary. In order to investigate the effect of these variations on force encoding, we util

Vitamin K is a well-established cofactor for γ-glutamyl carboxylase in vertebrates, yet its physiological functions in insects remain poorly understood. Warfarin, a vitamin K antagonist, inhibits vitamin K epoxide reductase, thereby blocking the vitamin K cycle. We have previously demonstrated that, in Drosophila melanogaster, vitamin K3 (menadione sodium bisulfite, MSB) is converted into endogenous vitamin K2, and that warfarin interferes with this cycle, leading to reduced oxidative stress. In the present study, we investigated the effects of chronic exposure to MSB (3.5 mM) and/or warfarin

Acute heat exposure can suppress stored-product insects through delayed survivor-level impairment that is not captured by mortality alone. This study evaluated the biological consequences of high temperature shocks to Trogoderma granarium Everts (Coleoptera: Dermestidae) and Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.) (Coleoptera: Silvanidae). Adults, larvae, eggs, and developmental cohorts were exposed to factorial combinations of 40, 42, 44, 46, and 48 °C and 5, 15, 30, and 45 min, with untreated controls maintained under standard rearing conditions (27 ± 1 °C, 65 ± 5% RH, and a 12:12 h light:dark photop

Providencia stuartii is emerging as an Extensively Drug-Resistant (XDR) pathogen commonly found in animals, insects, and in burned and immunocompromised conditions. The misuse of antibiotics in poultry feed causes the emergence of XDR bacteria in the poultry industry. The knowledge of zoonotic transmissibility of poultry-derived P. stuartii remains elusive in Noakhali, Bangladesh. Poultry fecal and rectal swab samples were collected from selected farms in Noakhali, Bangladesh. Bacterial isolation and identification were performed using MacConkey agar, biochemical tests, and 16S rRNA Sanger seq

Bacterial symbionts of insects undergo dramatic genome reduction during their evolutionary transition from free-living to host-dependent lifestyles, but the dynamics of genome degradation remain poorly understood due to the difficulty of observing these processes in real-time. Sodalis glossinidius, a facultative bacterial endosymbiont of tsetse flies, provides an exceptional opportunity to study this transition experimentally: Unlike highly specialised obligate symbionts, S. glossinidius can be cultured in vitro and retains a large genome (4 Mbp) with extensive pseudogene content (49%, vs. ~ 1

This study examines the lethal and sublethal effects of the commonly used rice crop pesticides cypermethrin, butachlor, and carbendazim on the broad-shouldered water strider, Microvelia pulchella. Conducted under controlled conditions, the research aimed to elucidate the direct and indirect impacts of these pesticides on key life-history traits of this aquatic predatory insect. Initial dose-response bioassays revealed that cypermethrin was the most toxic, with a median lethal concentration (LC50) of 0.79 ppm, followed by butachlor (LC50 = 2.53 ppm) and carbendazim (LC50 = 15.63 ppm). Spiders, ubiquitous and abundant predators in terrestrial ecosystems, often are the subjects of an unjust negative perception. However, these remarkable creatures stand as unsung heroes within our ecosystems, contributing a multitude of ecosystem services critical to human well-being. Here, we describe the diverse spectrum of ecosystem services offered by spiders and their potential to inspire or directly provide nature-based solutions. Provisioning services include the versatile uses of silk-like and other materials, inspiration for biomimetic technology, medicines derived from venom, hemolym

UNLABELLED: Flaviviruses are known for their neurotropic properties and their long-lasting neurological effects. As mosquito-borne viruses, they can persistently infect the central nervous system of mosquitoes without causing symptoms, yet they can alter the physiology and behavior of these insects. However, the molecular mechanisms by which flaviviruses directly influence mosquito feeding behavior remain largely unexplored. Here, we show that dengue virus serotype 2 (DENV2) and Zika virus (ZIKV) elevate mosquito locomotor activity and blood-feeding propensity throughout the day. Untargeted me

The diversity of birds in most parts of the world is very high, and thus, they may carry different types of highly differentiated and unknown viruses. Thanks to advanced sequencing technologies, studies on the diversity of bird-associated viruses have increased over the past few years. In this study, a large-scale viral metagenomics survey was performed on cloacal swabs of 2,990 birds from nine provinces of the Chinese mainland. To detect undescribed RNA viruses in birds, more than 1,800 sequences sharing relatively low (<60%) amino acid sequence identity with the best match in the GenBank dat

Plant diseases caused by phytopathogens result in huge economic losses in agriculture. In addition, the use of chemical products to control such diseases causes many problems to the environment and to human health. However, some bacteria and fungi have a mutualistic relationship with plants in nature, mainly exchanging nutrients and protection. Thus, exploring those beneficial microorganisms has been an interesting and promising alternative for mitigating the use of agrochemicals and, consequently, achieving a more sustainable agriculture. Microorganisms are able to produce and excrete several

Yersinia pestis (the agent of flea-borne plague) must obstruct the flea's proventriculus to maintain transmission to a mammalian host. To this end, Y. pestis must consolidate a mass that entrapped Y. pestis within the proventriculus very early after its ingestion. We developed a semiautomated fluorescent image analysis method and used it to monitor and compare colonization of the flea proventriculus by a fully competent flea-blocking Y. pestis strain, a partially competent strain, and a noncompetent strain. Our data suggested that flea blockage results primarily from the replication of Y. pest

Pesticides are agrochemical compounds used to kill pests (insects, rodents, fungi, or unwanted plants), which are key to meet the world food demand. Regrettably, some important issues associated with their widespread/extensive use (contamination, bioaccumulation, and development of pest resistances) demand a reduction in the amount of pesticide applied in crop protection. Among the novel technologies used to combat the deterioration of our environment, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as innovative and promising materials in agroindustry since they possess several features (high po

This review focuses on the most reliable and up-to-date methods for diagnosing trypanosomoses, a group of diseases of wild and domestic mammals, caused by trypanosomes, parasitic zooflagellate protozoans mainly transmitted by insects. In Africa, the Americas and Asia, these diseases, which in some cases affect humans, result in significant illness in animals and cause major economic losses in livestock. A number of pathogens are described in this review, including several Salivarian trypanosomes, such as Trypanosoma brucei sspp. (among which are the agents of sleeping sickness, the human Afric
