PURPOSE: Most studies of fundus autofluorescence (FAF) in geographic atrophy (GA) have been nonquantitative, with inadequate registration of image modalities. Furthermore, as pointed out in the recent Consensus Definition for Atrophy Associated with Age-Related Macular Degeneration on OCT, it is unclear whether decreased FAF would be correlated exclusively with a single category of OCT-defined atrophy. PURPOSE: To demonstrate the changes of the retinal vascular architecture in the diffusely degenerated thin retina.
METHODS: Three-week-old weanling Wistar Kyoto rats were divided randomly into two groups. One group (n = 20) was fed a vitamin E-deficient solid diet and the other group (n = 20) was fed a solid rat chow diet. Ascorbic acid and glutathione were measured in retinas excised from normal rats reared in a cyclic light or dark environment and in dystrophic rats from the dark environment.
