This study investigated the biomechanical efficacy of conventional and 3D-printed scaffold-augmented fixation methods for a large 6 cm osseous femoral defect. Finite element analyses were conducted to compare four conventional techniques: single plate, intramedullary nail, combined plate and nail, and double plate. These were then evaluated with the addition of three porous Ti-6Al-4V scaffold designs (Weaire-Phelan, Diamond, and Voronoi) with 70% porosity. Models were subjected to peak physiological loading from gait, simulating a 106 kg patient. Performance was assessed based on implant stres

PURPOSE: Most of the techniques for forearm lengthening involve external fixation to achieve stability and provide progressive distraction. We introduce the use of elastic stable intramedullar nailing (ESIN) in combination with external circular assembly for the procedure. The purpose of this prospective study was to compare Ilizarov's classical technique with this combined technique.
METHODS: Fifty-seven patients, with forearm length discrepancies or deformities either congenital or acquired, were prospectively followed-up. Patients were divided in two groups: 35 had only external fixation,

We report the results of distraction osteogenesis (callotasis) for the reconstruction of extensive defects after the excision of skeletal tumours in the limbs. Bone transport was performed in ten patients (five osteosarcomas and five giant-cell tumours), shortening-distraction in three (two osteosarcomas and one Ewing's sarcoma), and distraction osteogenesis combined with an intramedullary nail to reduce the time of external fixation in six (three osteosarcomas, two chondrosarcomas, and one malignant fibrous histiocytoma). The mean length of the defects after excision of the lesion was 8.4 cm.

BACKGROUND: Anterior knee pain is among the most common complications after tibial intramedullary nailing (IMN), yet its etiology remains multifactorial and not fully elucidated. While surgical and technical factors have been widely studied, the role of intrinsic patellofemoral morphology has received limited attention.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 249 patients who underwent tibial IMN for diaphyseal tibial fractures between January 2018 and December 2023. Patients with pre-existing knee pathology or surgical complications were excluded. All surgeries were performed using a para

Tibiotalocalcaneal (TTC) nailing is commonly used to treat severe ankle trauma, especially in patients with poor bone quality or compromised soft tissue. Although biomechanical studies suggest that posterior-to-anterior (P-A) screws enhance stability, the clinical impact of these screws remains uncertain. This study aims to compare complication rates between patients who underwent TTC nailing with and without P-A screws after ankle trauma. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 33 patients who underwent TTC nailing for ankle trauma between 2016 and 2022. Patients were divided into two group

OBJECTIVE: Minimally invasive reduction and intramedullary nailing (IMN) are the most common strategies used to treat subtrochanteric femur fractures (SFF). We report a new minimally invasive surgical technique for the successful reduction of SFF and maintenance of fragmental position after longitudinal traction. This study compared the radiological and clinical effects of these two reduction techniques when using IMN to treat SFF.
METHODS: All 43 patients who underwent SFF at our hospital were included in this retrospective study. Twenty-two patients were treated using the conservative metho

Cephalomedullary nail is the gold standard treatment for intertrochanteric fracture in geriatric population. The aim of the study was to investigate the differences of the reamed versus the unreamed short proximal femoral nailing (PFN), in terms of the duration of surgery and the outcome. The impact of patients and fracture characteristics to the outcome was also evaluated. A retrospective analysis of 158 elderly patients, who sustained intertrochanteric fracture of the femur, with a minimum follow up of one year, was performed. 78 patients underwent a reamed proximal femoral nailing (PFN) whe

PURPOSE: Femoral fractures are common in low and middle-income countries (LMIC), predominantly caused by high-energy trauma. The surgical implant generation network (SIGN®) program offers two different intramedullary nails in LMIC which are designed to be used without image intensifier free of charge for the patients: the SIGN standard nail (SSN®) and the SIGN Fin nail (SFN®). This study aimed to compare the results of the SSN® and the SFN® for the treatment of middle and distal shaft femoral fractures through a retrograde approach.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a retrospective, descriptive,

INTRODUCTION: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)-induced osteoporosis, myasthenia, and disequilibrium are important risk factors for hip fracture, and decreased respiratory function after hip fracture surgery can decelerate recovery of activities of daily living (ADL) in elderly patients.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 90-year-old male patient underwent an open reduction and intramedullary pinning surgery for right femoral intertrochanteric fracture. After surgery, he remained confined to bed with pain and swelling in the right lower extremity. Due to his history of COPD, he had a postoperati

BACKGROUND: Hip fractures are an increasingly common consequence of falls in older people that are associated with a high risk of death and reduced function. The vast majority of intertrochanteric fractures require surgical treatment to withstand early mobilization and weight bearing, which prevents complications due to prolonged bed rest and aids in fracture healing.
METHODS: This study is compromised by two parts, the experimental study and the clinical part. In the first part, a standard 130° nail will be used with the appropriate lag screw(s) and dynamic distal locking in synthetic osteop

Background and objectives: Iatrogenic fractures are potential complications during intramedullary (IM) nailing for atypical femoral fractures (AFFs). The risk factors associated with iatrogenic fractures remain unclear, although excessive femoral bowing and osteoporosis are hypothesized to be contributing factors. The present study aimed to determine the risk factors for the occurrence of iatrogenic fractures during IM nailing in patients with AFFs. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study evaluated 95 patients with AFF (all female; age range: 49-87 years) who underwent

Rationale: Graphene oxide (GO) based nanomaterials have shown potential for the diagnosis and treatment of amyloid-β (Aβ)-related diseases, mainly on Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, these nanomaterials have limitations. How GO is beneficial to eliminate Aβ burden, and its physiological function in Aβ-related diseases, still needs to be investigated. Moreover, postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is an Aβ-related common central nervous system complication, however, nanomedicine treatment is lacking. Methods: To evaluate the effects of GO on Aβ levels, HEK293T-APP-GFP and SHSY5Y-APP-GFP

BACKGROUND: The objectives of this study were first to compare the results of osteosynthesis with standard Metaizeau (MS) nails versus Metaizeau Junior Flex or MJF Orthofix (MJF) in terms of the stability of long-bone fractures in children, and to study the preoperative and postoperative safety of these new nails. We also carried out an analysis by computer modeling of a femur, in order to compare the biomechanical stability of the 2 nails. The interest in the MJF nails lies in the improvements they bring in terms of stability for long-bone fractures in pediatric patients, as well as the simpl
