Fundus image analysis of retinitis pigmentosa using artificial intelligence.

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a group of inherited retinal diseases that are caused by genetic defects that lead to progressive photoreceptor loss and eventual blindness. Early diagnosis would be helpful for effective management of the disease; however, many patients stay unaware of early symptoms. Meanwhile, fundus images are widely obtained during routine medical checkups but are underused for detecting RP. This study explores the effectiveness of finetuning deep learning models, pre-trained for general visual tasks, to identify RP from color fundus images. The dataset comprised 321 color fun

Leveraging neural network models for drug repurposing: a case study on cardiac hypertrophy.

Drug repurposing has emerged as an attractive strategy in contemporary pharmaceutical research, presenting an opportunity to expedite drug discovery, minimize developmental costs, and mitigate risks associated with developing new pharmaceuticals. In this study, we investigated a novel approach based on deep learning of human transcriptomic mechanisms for systematic identification of additional therapeutic potential in preexisting drugs. We trained a composite feedforward neural network model using gene expression data sourced from the ARCHS4 compilation of the GEO, encompassing extensive human

A radiology-aware fuzzy deep learning framework with entropy-guided feature selection for robust multi-disease chest X-ray classification across multiple magnifications.

Chest X-ray (CXR) imaging remains the most widely used and cost-effective modality for diagnosing thoracic diseases, yet automated multi-disease interpretation remains challenging due to acquisition variability, subtle overlapping pathologies, and multi-class classification complexity. Existing deep learning approaches often lack uncertainty modeling, interpretability, and robustness across heterogeneous image resolutions, limiting clinical adoption. We propose a fuzzy deep learning framework for multi-disease CXR classification, integrating: (i) radiology-aware augmentation to enhance general

Image segmentation of cervical grainy sandy patches lesions associated with female genital schistosomiasis using deep convolutional neural network with U-NET architecture.

Female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) is a neglected but highly prevalent disease in sub-Saharan Africa, caused by Schistosoma haematobium egg-induced inflammation in the pelvic region. FGS is characterized by four mucosal lesion types in the lower female genital tract: grainy sandy patches (GSP), homogeneous yellow sandy patches, abnormal blood vessels, and rubbery papules. This study focuses on the segmentation of cervical GSP lesions using a deep-learning convolutional neural network. A total of 583 cervical images from women in a S. haematobium endemic region of Madagascar, all exhibiting F

FER20E: An Extended Facial Expression Recognition Dataset With 20 Discrete Emotions.

Facial emotion recognition (FER) has traditionally focused on a limited set of basic expressions, often failing to capture the complexity, subtlety, and cultural variability of real-world human emotions. To address these limitations, this paper introduces FER20E, a large-scale facial expression dataset comprising 20 emotion categories, including both basic and fine-grained affective states. The proposed emotion taxonomy is systematically derived by integrating facial action coding system (FACS)-based action units (AUs) with the valence-arousal circumplex model, ensuring both interpretability a

Accurate Classification of Human CD4+ T, CD8+ T, and CD19+ B Cells Isolated from Splenocytes by Cross-Polarized Diffraction Image Pairs.

Diffraction imaging of cells allows rapid phenotyping by the response of intracellular molecules to coherent illumination. However, its ability to distinguish numerous types of human leukocytes remains to be investigated. Here, we show that accurate classification of three lymphocyte subtypes can be achieved with features extracted from cross-polarized diffraction image (p-DI) pairs. A deep neural network (DNN) of DINet-PS has been developed for feature extraction from and filtering of, in the angular frequency domain, p-DI pairs acquired from live lymphocytes isolated from human spleen tissue

Multiclass leukemia cell classification using hybrid deep learning and machine learning with CNN-based feature extraction.

Leukemia is the most prevalent form of blood cancer, affecting individuals across all age groups. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment and improved clinical outcomes. Peripheral blood smear analysis, a key non-invasive diagnostic tool, often suffers from subjective interpretation, inter-observer variability, and a lack of readily available expertise. Although deep learning approaches, particularly Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), have demonstrated exceptional performance in binary classification tasks, multiclass classification of leukemia subtypes remains chall

An open-source, externally validated neural network algorithm to recognize daily-life gait of older adults based on a lower-back sensor.

Gait recognition is critical for daily-life fall risk assessment and rehabilitation monitoring, but existing models face many challenges that limit their use in daily life for older adults. We aimed to develop an open-source gait recognition for older adults using sensor data and explore the effect of data augmentation on model training. A convolutional neural network was trained using lower-back inertial sensor data from 20 participants (mean age 76.4) and externally validated on 47 participants (mean age 72.3). The model was trained using 6-channel data (accelerations and angular velocities)

Alzheimer's disease classification using mutual information generated graph convolutional network for functional MRI.

BackgroundHigh-order cognitive functions depend on collaborative actions and information exchange between multiple brain regions. These inter-regional interactions can be characterized by mutual information (MI). Alzheimer's disease (AD) is known to affect many high-order cognitive functions, suggesting an alteration to inter-regional MI, which remains unstudied.ObjectiveTo examine whether inter-regional MI can effectively distinguish different stages of AD from normal control (NC) through a connectome-based graph convolutional network (GCN).MethodsMI was calculated between the mean time serie

MiThyCA: A Computational Pathology Pipeline for the Identification of Microscopic Foci of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma-Like Nuclear Features with AI in Whole-Slide Histological Images.

The histological identification of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is straightforward for experienced endocrine pathologists. The increase in radical thyroidectomies led to a raise in the rate of postoperative incidental subcentimeter PTC foci and the recent introduction of the Non-Invasive Follicular Thyroid Neoplasm with Papillary-like Nuclear Features (NIFTP) as a less aggressive mimicker of PTC, which significantly complicated the histology screening of thyroid histology specimens. Artificial Intelligence (AI) applied to Whole Slide Images (WSI) can speed up these processes, aiding patho

Ankle Sensor-Based Detection of Freezing of Gait in Parkinson's Disease in Semi-Free Living Environments.

Freezing of gait (FOG) is a motor symptom experienced by people with Parkinson's Disease (PD) where they feel like they are glued to the floor. Accurate and continuous detection is needed for effective cueing to prevent or shorten FOG episodes. A convolutional neural network (CNN) was developed to detect FOG episodes in data recorded from an inertial measurement unit (IMU) on a PD patient's ankle under semi-free living conditions. Data were split into two sets: one with all movements and another with walking and turning activities relevant to FOG detection. The CNN model was evaluated using fi

Graph and Multi-Level Sequence Fusion Learning for Predicting the Molecular Activity of BACE-1 Inhibitors.

The development of BACE-1 (β-site amyloid precursor protein cleaving enzyme 1) inhibitors is a crucial focus in exploring early treatments for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recently, graph neural networks (GNNs) have demonstrated significant advantages in predicting molecular activity. However, their reliance on graph structures alone often neglects explicit sequence-level semantic information. To address this limitation, we proposed a Graph and multi-level Sequence Fusion Learning (GSFL) model for predicting the molecular activity of BACE-1 inhibitors. Firstly, molecular graph structures generate

Alzheimer disease predicting from clinical and MRI data using DeepALZNET dual pathway framework.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a significant neurological condition characterized by progressive cognitive deterioration, with prevalence rising exponentially with age. Currently, there is no effective cure, and the disease progression impacts patients' quality of life, often leading to severe symptoms before death. The gradual development of AD symptoms, often mistaken for typical aging, frequently leads to delayed diagnosis. This underscores the critical need for precise, early diagnostic methodologies, as timely intervention plays a crucial role in managing progression. Accordingly, this paper

Realistic fundus photograph generation for improving automated disease classification.

AIMS: This study aims to investigate whether denoising diffusion probabilistic models (DDPMs) could generate realistic retinal images, and if they could be used to improve the performance of a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) ensemble for multiple retinal disease classification, which was previously shown to outperform human experts. METHODS: We trained DDPMs to generate retinal fundus images representing diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma or normal eyes. Eight board-certified ophthalmologists evaluated 96 test images to assess the realism of generated ima

Evaluating machine learning classifiers and explainability for monitoring cow behaviour with wearable nose rings.

Wearable technologies are revolutionizing precision livestock monitoring by allowing continuous real-time monitoring of animal behaviour. This study investigates and evaluates the use of machine learning techniques to classify dairy cow behaviours using tri-axial accelerometer data collected from novel wearable nose ring sensor. The raw dataset initially included five distinct behaviours: Feeding, Ruminating, Standing, Lying and Walking. However due to data imbalance and data limitations we refined the classification to three core categories: Feeding, Rumination and Walking. While previous stu

Differential gray matter correlates and machine learning prediction of abuse and internalizing psychopathology in adolescent females.

Childhood abuse represents one of the most potent risk factors for the development of psychopathology during childhood, accounting for 30-60% of the risk for onset. While previous studies have separately associated reductions in gray matter volume (GMV) with childhood abuse and internalizing psychopathology (IP), it is unclear whether abuse and IP differ in their structural abnormalities, and which GMV features are related to abuse and IP at the individual level. In a pooled multisite, multi-investigator sample, 246 child and adolescent females between the ages of 8-18 were recruited into stud

SVM directed machine learning classifier for human action recognition network.

Understanding human behavior and human action recognition are both essential components of effective surveillance video analysis for the purpose of guaranteeing public safety. However, existing approaches such as three-dimensional convolutional neural networks (3D CNN) and two-stream neural networks (2SNN) have computational hurdles due to the significant parameterization they require. In this paper, we offer HARNet, a specialized lightweight residual 3D CNN that is built on directed acyclic graphs and was created expressly to handle these issues and achieve effective human action detection. Challenges in Using Deep Neural Networks Across Multiple Readers in Delineating Prostate Gland Anatomy.

Deep learning methods provide enormous promise in automating manually intense tasks such as medical image segmentation and provide workflow assistance to clinical experts. Deep neural networks (DNN) require a significant amount of training examples and a variety of expert opinions to capture the nuances and the context, a challenging proposition in oncological studies (H. Wang et al., Nature, vol. 620, no. 7972, pp. 47-60, Aug 2023). Inter-reader variability among clinical experts is a real-world problem that severely impacts the generalization of DNN reproducibility.
