Predicting functional outcome in acute ischemic stroke patients after endovascular treatment by machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Endovascular therapy (EVT) was the standard treatment for acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion. Prognosis after EVT is always a major concern. Here, we aimed to explore a predictive model for patients after EVT. METHOD: A total of 156 patients were retrospectively enrolled. The primary outcome was functional dependence (defined as a 90-day modified Rankin Scale score ≤ 2). Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator and univariate logistic regression were used to select predictive factors. Various machine learning algorithms, including multivariate logistic regres

Case studies of clinical decision-making through prescriptive models based on machine learning.

BACKGROUND: The development of computational methodologies to support clinical decision-making is of vital importance to reduce morbidity and mortality rates. Specifically, prescriptive analytic is a promising area to support decision-making in the monitoring, treatment and prevention of diseases. These aspects remain a challenge for medical professionals and health authorities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, we propose a methodology for the development of prescriptive models to support decision-making in clinical settings. The prescriptive model requires a predictive model to build th

Eplet mismatch scores and de novo donor-specific antibody development in simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation.

Antibody-mediated rejection is the principal cause of allotransplant graft failure. Available studies differ on the impact of de novo donor specific antibody (dnDSA) in pancreas transplants but are limited by patient sample size and sera sample collection. High-resolution HLA incompatibility scoring algorithms are able to more accurately predict dnDSA development. We hypothesized that HLA incompatibility scores as determined by the HLA-Matchmaker, HLA-EMMA, and PIRCHE-II algorithms would serve as a predictor of de novo donor specific antibody (dnDSA) development and clarify the role dnDSA as d

Early Hemodynamic Changes during Head-Up Tilt Table Testing Can Predict a Neurocardiogenic Response in an African-American Patient Population.

BACKGROUND: Head-up tilt table testing (HUTT) is time-consuming and associated with increased patient morbidity. Hemodynamic changes that occur during the early phase of HUTT may be predictive of neurocardiogenic syncope. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed in 119 consecutive African Americans ( 57 ± 19) who underwent HUTT for evaluation of syncope of unknown etiology. Positive responses were defined as the development of symptoms linked with a systolic blood pressure (BP) <90 mm Hg, heart rate <50 b.p.m. or sinus arrest >3 s. Hemodynamic variables during the passive phase of

The overprescribing of opioids: a public health approach to an epidemic of addiction.

Introduction: When developing phenotype algorithms for observational research, there is usually a trade-off between definitions that are sensitive or specific. The objective of this study was to estimate the performance characteristics of phenotype algorithms designed for increasing specificity and to estimate the immortal time associated with each algorithm. Materials and methods: We examined algorithms for 11 chronic health conditions. The analyses were from data from five databases. For each health condition, we created five algorithms to examine performance (sensitivity and positive predic

Predicting apneic events in preterm infants using cardio-respiratory and movement features.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Preterm neonates are prone to episodes of apnea, bradycardia and hypoxia (ABH) that can lead to neurological morbidities or even death. There is broad interest in developing methods for real-time prediction of ABH events to inform interventions that prevent or reduce their incidence and severity. Using advances in machine learning methods, this study develops an algorithm to predict ABH events. METHODS: Following previous studies showing that respiratory instabilities are closely associated with bouts of movement, we present a modeling framework that can predict ABH

Simultaneous and Proportional Control Based on an Enhanced Musculoskeletal Model.

Recently, the musculoskeletal model (MM) has been widely studied for decoding movement intent from electromyography (EMG) signals. However, the decoding performance of the MM is impaired for the coordinated movements of multiple degrees of freedom (DoFs) due to the crosstalk between signals of multiple muscles. To address this problem, this study proposed an enhanced MM for 3-DoF motion prediction by taking the "divide and conquer" (DC) strategy and integrating the non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) algorithm, which is named as DC-NMF-MM. The control signals of wrist flexion/extension and

Construction and verification of a machine learning-based prediction model of deep vein thrombosis formation after spinal surgery.

BACKGROUND: Deep vein thromboembolism (DVT) is a common postoperative complication with high morbidity and mortality rates. However, the safety and effectiveness of using prophylactic anticoagulants for preventing DVT after spinal surgery remain controversial. Hence, it is crucial to predict whether DVT occurs in advance following spinal surgery. The present study aimed to establish a machine learning (ML)-based prediction model of DVT formation following spinal surgery. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of patients who underwent elective spinal surgery at the Third Affiliated Hospital

A reduced-form ensemble of short-term air quality forecasting with the Sparrow search algorithm and decomposition error correction.

The level of air pollution is reflected by the air quality index (AQI). People can use the AQI to organize their activities in a way that reduces or prevents exposure to air pollution altogether. Based on the AQI, governments, organizations, and businesses can also make plans to reduce air pollution. The multi-model ensemble has recently become a popular method for forecasting time series; however, it encounters the research problems of multi-parameter optimization and interaction analysis. To this end, a reduced-form ensemble of short-term air quality forecasting with the Sparrow search algor

Predictive Analysis of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor and Apolipoprotein E SNPs in Alzheimer's Pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and apolipoprotein E (APOE) are key regulators of neuronal function and cognitive health. Genetic variations in these genes, particularly nonsynonymous single-nucleotide polymorphisms (nsSNPs), have been linked to Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study employs a computational approach to predict the potential functional impacts of nsSNPs in BDNF and APOE to explore their contributions to AD pathogenesis. METHODS: A total of 3590 BDNF and 27,830 APOE SNPs were retrieved from the dbSNP database. Following quality filtering of coding region loca
