Advances and Global Trends in Three-Dimensional Human Tissue Models for HIV Research: A Bibliometric Analysis.

Despite antiretroviral therapy's success in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) management, no cure or preventive vaccine exists; three-dimensional (3D) human tissue models-emerging from biomedical research, tissue engineering, and microfluidics-offer new potential, yet a scientometric analysis of their progress remains lacking. We reviewed the current status of three in vitro 3D models for HIV research: organoids, organ-on-a-chip, and 3D bioprinting. We conducted a bibliometric comparative analysis of 3D human tissue models in HIV research. A total of 852 documents published between 2014 and 2

Engineering breast cancer tumor microenvironment: advanced fabrication for 3Din vitromodels.

The investigation of breast cancer initiation and progression has been significantly advanced by the development of three-dimensional (3D) in vitro models, which provide a more physiologically relevant representation of the tumor microenvironment (TME) compared to conventional two-dimensional cultures. Over the past decade, and particularly since 2020, a wide range of strategies has been developed to generate stable and functional 3D breast cancer models. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the most promising (bio)fabrication-based technologies developed for breast cancer modeling

Patient-specific three-dimensional (3-D) cutting guides and custom plates in the management of tibia and femur malunion - an update.

Malunion of the lower limb long bones is a significant complication following the operative and nonoperative management of fractures. Malunion can manifest as a simple uniplanar deformity or a complex multiplanar deformity, including angular, rotational, translational, and length discrepancies. The current gold standard is osteotomy correction. After thorough clinical assessment of deformity including rotational alignment, the deformity is further assessed using two-dimensional(2D) radiographs and computer-aided tomography (CT) scans reserved for intra-articular deformities. During surgery flu

3D bioprinted porous PLLA implants with dual gene modified BMSCs for osteoarthritis cartilage repair.

This study evaluated whether three-dimensional (3D) bioprinted spherical, porous poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) drug- loaded implants, combined with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) overexpressing transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and interleukin-10 (IL-10), can enhance the repair of osteoarthritis (OA)-related cartilage defects. Rat BMSCs were transduced with lentiviral vectors to achieve dual overexpression of TGF-β1 and IL-10, induced toward chondrogenic differentiation, and assessed for chondrogenic marker expression (COL2A1, SOX-9, and aggrecan). Spherical porous PLLA drug-loade

Assessment of the application of a novel three-dimension printing individualized titanium mesh in alveolar bone augmentation: A retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the clinical and radiographic outcomes of alveolar ridge augmentation using a novel three-dimensional printed individualized titanium mesh (3D-PITM) for guided bone regeneration (GBR). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Preoperative cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was used to evaluate alveolar ridge defects, followed by augmentation with high-porosity 3D-PITM featuring circular and spindle-shaped pores. Postoperative CBCT scans were taken immediately and after 6 months of healing. These scans were compared with preoperative scans to calculate changes in bone volume, height, and

A novel technique for C1-C2 posterior screw insertion using patient-specific guides created by CT-based 3D printing.

C1-C2 fixation has been developed for the rigid fusion of atlantoaxial instability. C1 lateral mass screw (C1 LMS)-C2 pedicle screw fixation is used more frequently due to its rigid fixation and high bone fusion rate. However, C1 screw placement is relatively unsafe even with recently developed image-based navigation systems. Patient-specific screw guide templates (PSGT) were developed to improve the accuracy and safety of C1 screw placement. Herein, we investigated the outcomes of the C1-C2 posterior fixation technique using PSGT. This was a retrospective study of six patients who underwent p

3D-Printed Modular Hemipelvic Endoprosthetic Reconstruction Following Periacetabular Tumor Resection: Early Results of 80 Consecutive Cases.

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction with an endoprosthesis following pelvic tumor resection has increased over the years. However, the long-term results reflect a disappointing frequency of mechanical complications and failures. In an attempt to enhance implant fixation, an electron beam melting (EBM)-based modular hemipelvic endoprosthesis was introduced. Our aim was to explore the preliminary clinical outcomes for patients who have been managed with this prosthesis. METHODS: We reviewed the records of 80 consecutive patients who had been managed at a single center between June 2015 and September 201

Preparation of high precision multilayer scaffolds based on Melt Electro-Writing to repair cartilage injury.

Rationale: Articular cartilage injury is quite common. However, post-injury cartilage repair is challenging and often requires medical intervention, which can be aided by 3D printed tissue engineering scaffolds. Specifically, the high accuracy of Melt Electro-Writing (MEW) technology facilitates the printing of scaffolds that imitate the structure and composition of natural cartilage to promote repair. Methods: MEW and Inkjet printing technology was employed to manufacture a composite scaffold that was then implanted into a cartilage injury site through microfracture surgery. While printing po

3D-Printed membrane as an alternative to amniotic membrane for ocular surface/conjunctival defect reconstruction: An in vitro & in vivo study.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the surgical handling and clinical applicability of a specific 3D-printed membrane design fabricated using a gelatin, elastin and sodium hyaluronate blend for conjunctival reconstruction and compare it with amniotic membrane (AM), which is normally used in such surgeries. METHODS: 3D printing technique was employed to fabricate the membrane based on gradient design. Prior to printing, rheometry was employed to optimize the ink composition. The printed membranes were then fully characterized in terms of physical and mechanical properties. In vi

Hybrid Melody Valve Implantation in Mitral Position in a Child: Usefulness of a 3-Dimensional Printed Model for Preprocedural Planning.

We present the case of a 4-month-old child with atrioventricular canal associated with severe left atrioventricular valve dysfunction who previously underwent 3 surgical valve reconstructions without significant improvement. A Hybrid Melody valve (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN) insertion was planned. Because of the low weight, the risk of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction was significant and therefore evaluated preprocedurally using a cardiac computed tomography-derived 3-dimensional printed model. In vitro tests showed good anchorage of the valve without subaortic obstruction and the pr

High channel count single-unit recordings from nonhuman primate frontal cortex.

BACKGROUND: Single unit recording in behaving nonhuman primates is widely used to study the primate central nervous system. However, certain questions cannot be addressed without recording large numbers of neurons simultaneously. Multiple 96-electrode probes can be implanted at one time, but certain problems must be overcome to make this approach practical. NEW METHOD: We describe a series of innovations and practical guidance for implanting and recording from 8 arrays of 96 electrodes (768 electrodes) in the frontal cortex of Macaca mulatta. The methods include an individualized 3D-printed c

3D-printed tracheoesophageal puncture and prosthesis placement simulator.

OBJECTIVES: A tracheoesophageal prosthesis (TEP) allows for speech after total laryngectomy. However, TEP placement is technically challenging, requiring a coordinated series of steps. Surgical simulators improve technical skills and reduce operative time. We hypothesize that a reusable 3-dimensional (3D)-printed TEP simulator will facilitate comprehension and rehearsal prior to actual procedures. METHODS: The simulator was designed using Fusion360 (Autodesk, San Rafael, CA). Components were 3D-printed in-house using an Ultimaker 2+ (Ultimaker, Netherlands). Squid simulated the common tracheo

3D-Printed Poly(Lactic-co-Glycolic Acid) Binder-Based Self-Hardening Calcium Phosphate Bone Scaffolds.

Three-dimensionally (3D)-printed alpha-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) scaffolds, fabricated through a low-temperature hydrothermal dissolution-precipitation process, replicate the structural and compositional features of native bone. Reinforcing hydrothermally processed α-TCP with poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) as a binder has previously been shown to confer distinct mechanical advantages, supporting its potential as a viable material for bone regenerative scaffolds. Although the hydrothermal processing of α-TCP scaffolds and PLGA-based mechanical reinforcement have each been characterized

Low-Cost, High-Fidelity 3D-Printed Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Dislocation Reduction Task Trainer.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dislocation is an emergency that requires prompt reduction to relieve pain and restore function. However, practicing reduction techniques can be challenging due to the limited availability of real-world cases and high-fidelity task trainers. Hands-on TMJ dislocation reduction task trainers are not readily available, highlighting the need to improve traditional education methods to provide more effective and accessible hands-on learning opportunities. To address this gap, we developed a low-cost, high-fidelity three-dimensional (3D) printed TMJ dislocation reductio
