This article presents data on the family and social environments of 501 children enrolled in public sponsored pre-K in 5 states and tests the relation of these resources to child competence. Structured interviews and questionnaires provide information from parents about the family's social and economic status. Direct assessments and teacher reports provide data on children's literacy, numeracy, and behavioral problems. A majority of the children served in public pre-K lived in poverty and showed decrements in language but not in other domains. A socioeconomic resource factor consisting of pare

One hundred sixty-six pregnant or parenting adolescent females completed a survey regarding early sexual experiences (wanted and unwanted), family dysfunction and violence, and health-risky behaviors occurring prior to age 18. Fifty-three percent had at least one unwanted sexual experience. Younger age at first unwanted sexual experience was associated with younger age at first wanted sexual experience. Adolescent females with an unwanted sexual experience, as compared to those without, were more likely to be victims of physical violence, to have run away, to be substance abusers, and to have

This research investigates the effects of epilepsy on the social and psychological adjustment of the children studied in the National Health Interview Survey of 1988. Analyses examine the effect of epilepsy on four measures of adjustment--home behavior problems, school behavior problems, depressed mood, and impulsiveness. For each outcome, we address five questions: (1) Do children with currently active epilepsy have poorer adjustment than children with inactive epilepsy? (2) Do children with epilepsy fare worse than other children? (3) Do demographic background and family structure moderate t

BACKGROUND: Children with overweight or obesity are at elevated risk for later-life mental health challenges, but the role of accelerometer-derived waking movement behaviors remains uncertain. Thus, we examined longitudinal associations of sedentary behavior (SB), light-intensity physical activity (LPA), and moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA) at age 7 with later-life internalizing and externalizing problems.
METHOD: We used data from the UK Millennium Cohort Study, focusing on children with overweight or obesity at age 7 who had valid accelerometer data and a complete set

The development of emotion regulation (ER) is associated with children's and adolescents' psychosocial adjustment and well-being. In this regard, previous studies have examined the role of different ER strategies, which can be characterized as being functional (e.g., reappraisal, problem solving) or dysfunctional (e.g., suppression, rumination). Based on the process model of emotion regulation, the strategies can also be classified according to their temporal position within the emotion generative process, with five families of ER strategies being proposed: situation selection, situation modif

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioral therapy is treatment of choice for insomnia, but availability is scarce. Self-help can increase availability at low cost, but evidence for its efficacy is limited, especially for the typical insomnia patient with co-morbid problems. We hypothesized that a cognitive behaviorally based self-help book is effective to treat insomnia in individuals, also with co-morbid problems, and that the effect is enhanced by adding brief therapist telephone support.
METHODS: Volunteer sample; 133 media-recruited adults with insomnia. History of sleep difficulties (mean [SD]) 1

BACKGROUND: Recent approaches to treating selective mutism (SM) have increasingly emphasized parent involvement, and several parent-mediated programs have shown promising efficacy. However, in regions where SM specialists are scarce, families have limited access to appropriate support. In this context, online behavioral parent training (BPT) may serve as a promising and scalable option that can overcome geographic barriers. Nevertheless, empirical studies specifically targeting SM-focused BPT remain limited. This pilot study evaluated the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of an online

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to cannabis may influence childhood cognition and behavior, but the epidemiologic evidence is mixed. Even less is known about the potential impact of secondhand exposure to cannabis during early childhood.
OBJECTIVE: This study sought to assess whether prenatal and/or postnatal exposure to cannabis was associated with childhood cognition and behavior.
STUDY DESIGN: This sub-study included a convenience sample of 81 mother-child pairs from a Colorado-based cohort. Seven common cannabinoids (including delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) and cannabidiol (CBD)) an

OBJECTIVE: The present project examined the relationships among early maternal maltreatment risk, children's self-regulation, and later development. It was expected that early maltreatment risk would impact children's emerging self-regulation which in turn, would foster pre-academic delays and behavioral problems.
METHOD: The project used structural equation modeling to examine the relationship between early maltreatment risk in 169 primiparous adolescent mothers and the subsequent development of their children in pre-academic and behavioral domains at 5 years of age. Maltreatment risk was as

Aggression and self-injury are common challenges for youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), often impacting safety, ability to access services and community resources, and quality of life for children, adolescents, and their families. As pediatricians and other pediatric primary care physicians are often tasked with managing these problems, this review outlines the evidence and potential strategies in both the assessment and management of aggression and self-injury for youth with ASD. Assessment begins with evaluating safety risks and identifying contributing factors, such as medical condi

Frontotemporal dementia is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by atrophy of the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain, and it is believed to primarily develop based on genetic factors. Its initial symptoms can appear relatively early, even between the ages of 40-50, affecting approximately 15-22 individuals out of 100,000 annually. The disease manifests in various forms, categorized into behavioral, aphasic, and motor variants due to its diverse presentations. The behavioral variant, constituting about half of the cases, is the most common type. It involves personality changes, behavi

The rapid proliferation of online multiplayer games has opened a new avenue for aggressive behaviors such as hostile communication, sabotaging, and griefing. The present investigation explores the prevalence, perception, risk factors, and consequences of victimization in toxic behaviors. A total of 2097 Hungarian gamers (88.5% male, Mage = 26.2 years, SD = 6.8) completed an online questionnaire. Most (66%) were victims of such incidents in the past year, and gamers considered the problem of toxic behaviors as severe. Younger gamers who spent more time playing competitive videogames (especiall

Marital breakup has been associated with numerous behavioral problems in children, such as sexual risk behaviors. This research is the first to examine sexual behaviors of Spanish adolescents related to whether their parents were married or divorced. Participants were 342 boys and girls aged between 14 and 18 years. The sample provided confidential information about their sexual behavior and birth control methods. Significant differences were only found in percentages of adolescents who had engaged in mutual masturbation, intercourse, or oral sex, and who had practiced these sexual relations i

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is often considered the primary problematic outcome of child sexual abuse (CSA). However, a number of other, relatively understudied negative sequelae appear to be prevalent as well. Data from 269 adolescents with a CSA history from the National Survey of Adolescents-Replication Study were therefore used to examine the prevalence of risky behaviors (i.e., problematic alcohol and drug use, delinquent behavior) and depression in this sample. The frequencies of these problems in youth with and without a history of PTSD also were examined. Results indicated tha

Individuals with CHARGE syndrome were identified through the Canadian Pediatric Surveillance Program (CPSP). From this population-based cohort (n=78), we present data on developmental and behavioral characteristics for the first 13 individuals (eight males, five females) for whom assessments are complete. Standardized parent questionnaires on development and behavior were followed by a structured telephone interview, with a specific emphasis on symptoms of autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). Preliminary results confirm that individuals with CHARGE syndrome have relatively low adaptive behavior s

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Behavioral instability in children and adolescents is a vexing problem faced by many clinicians. This dilemma is magnified when it presents in a child with an acute medical condition. Effective treatment in these cases with medications may help to reduce morbidity and facilitate appropriate medical care for the underlying condition.
RECENT FINDINGS: There are many reviews, but few studies examine the treatment of behavioral instability in the pediatric population. There are even fewer that address behavioral instability in the presence of a comorbid medical condition. Many

A cohort of 199 individuals with mental retardation referred for behavioral and psychiatric crisis intervention services was studied to determine attributes differentiating physically aggressive behavior from other behavioral problems. Individuals with aggressive and nonaggressive behavior had similar neurological histories and current medical status and similar levels of seizure disorders and CNS abnormalities. Aggressive individuals more often had psychiatric diagnoses of organic brain syndrome, but frequencies of this diagnosis in each group were small. Current aggression was predicted by g

BACKGROUND: Self-harm (SH; intentional self-poisoning or self-injury) is common in children and adolescents, often repeated, and strongly associated with suicide. This is an update of a broader Cochrane review on psychosocial and pharmacological treatments for deliberate SH first published in 1998 and previously updated in 1999. We have now divided the review into three separate reviews; this review is focused on psychosocial and pharmacological interventions for SH in children and adolescents.
OBJECTIVES: To identify all randomised controlled trials of psychosocial interventions, pharmacolog
