Prognosis of inoperable or recurrent esophageal carcinoma is, at best, poor. Once an esophagotracheal fistula has developed, the overall condition of the patient declines rapidly. Aspiration pneumonia and severe coughing are common. The introduction of esophageal tubes does not always seal the fistula sufficiently and may compromise the airway causing stridor and dyspnea. Success in lung transplantation has been hindered by airway complications, usually as a result of anastomotic ischemia and stenosis. We report our experience with expanding metal stents in managing airway stenoses after lung transplantation. The ocular and systemic findings in 112 Mayo Clinic patients with relapsing polychondritis were reviewed. The incidence of males and females was equal, with median age at diagnosis of 51 years and the median follow-up of 6 years. BACKGROUND: Some studies have reported that long-term prognosis after pneumonia is poor. Our aim was to determine predictors of long-term outcomes with special attention to community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) etiology.
METHODS: We studied 1930 patients who were hospitalized with CAP from January 2002 through November 2017 at Saitama Cardiovascular and Respiratory Center and were discharged alive. We conducted a retrospective study for calculation of survival rate using the Kaplan-Meier method and analysis of prognostic factors by multivariate analysis using a Cox proportional hazard model.
