INTRODUCTION: Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) infections are characterized by the development of granulomatous lesions in different parts of the bodies of animals and humans. MTBC infections cause significant economic and public health consequences in Ethiopia. However, there is a shortage of epidemiological data on MTBC infections in the pastoral regions of the country. The objective of the present study was to investigate the epidemiology of MTBC infections in cattle and humans in the remote pastoral setting of southern Ethiopia.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was used to

Silicosis is a well-established risk factor for Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. This study aimed to estimate the burden and risk factors of M. tuberculosis infection. Silicosis patients from Zhejiang Province were screened for M. tuberculosis by sputum culture, chest radiographs, whole-blood gamma interferon (IFN-γ) release assay (QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube [QFT-GIT]), and tuberculin skin test (TST). Potential risk factors for M. tuberculosis were identified. Data for 1,659 patients were obtained from 1,684 participants. Of these, 1,656 (99.8%) were men, and the average age was 58 (54 t

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) increases the risk of tuberculosis (TB) and will hamper global TB control due to the dramatic rise in type 2 DM in TB-endemic settings. In this trial, we will examine the efficacy and safety of TB preventive therapy against the development of TB disease in people with DM who have latent TB infection (LTBI), with a 12-week course of rifapentine and isoniazid (3HP).
METHODS: The 'Prevention of tuberculosis in diabetes mellitus' (PROTID) consortium will randomise 3000 HIV-negative eligible adults with DM and LTBI, as evidenced by a positive tuberculin skin test

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the major risk factors for COVID-19 complications as it is one of the chronic immune-compromising conditions especially if patients have uncontrolled diabetes, poor HbA1c and/or irregular blood glucose levels. Diabetic patients' mortality rates with COVID-19 are higher than those of cardiovascular or cancer patients. Recently, Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine has shown successful results in reversing diabetes in both rats and clinical trials based on different mechanisms from aerobic glycolysis to beta cells regeneration. BCG is a multi-face vaccine that

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is endemic in Ethiopia with higher prevalence in cattle, particularly in the central parts. Spread of Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis) to wider regions is inevitable in uncontrolled conditions. This study was conducted to explore the pathology, characterize M. bovis strains, and describe genotypic diversity to demonstrate possible epidemiological links in emerging dairy areas of Ethiopia, namely, Mekelle and Gondar. Twenty-seven bTB positive cattle identified by the Single Intradermal Comparative Cervical Tuberculin (SICCT) test were subjected to post-mortem inspection

Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at increased risk of infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and, hence, of developing tuberculosis (TB) disease. The aims of this study are to identify the prevalence and determinants of latent TB infection (LTBI) among HCWs in Duhok Province. This is a cross-sectional prospective study conducted during April-July 2018 in different health care facilities of Duhok province. HCWs at multiple levels were selected by a non-systematic random sampling method. Information on demographic and associated risk factors of LTBI were collected by using a standardized q

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: The aims of this talk are to: (a) provide an overview of our method of collecting, quantifying, and sizing infectious aerosols of Mycobacterium tuberculosis; and (b) to review data indicating that cough aerosol cultures of M. tuberculosis are the best predictors of infection and incident disease among household contacts of persons with active tuberculosis (TB). New infection was defined as tuberculin skin test conversion.
METHODS: We developed a cough aerosol sampling system by placing two Andersen cascade impactor viability samplers inside a cylinder into which patients

BACKGROUND: Children make up a significant proportion of the global tuberculosis (TB) caseload, and experience considerable TB-related morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, it is not easy to diagnose TB in the first years of life because of the diversity of its clinical presentation and the non-specific nature of most of its symptoms.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-month-old male child was admitted to hospital because of the sudden onset of rapidly increasing swelling of the neck, face and upper trunk a few hours before. Upon admission, his temperature was 36.5°C, pulse rate 120/min, respiratory r

OBJECTIVE: We encountered a contact group investigation in which differences in environmental factors, including the ventilation frequency and the airflow, led to differences in the infection risk.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The index case was diagnosed with tuberculosis after cough and sputum persisted for 9 months. The patient was an instructor working at vocational schools A and B. Sixty-six instructors/staff and 446 students had contact with this patient at the schools. The patient taught 24 regular courses and 21 short-term courses at the 2 schools after symptom onset through to the final da

BACKGROUND: In drug development, it is important to have an understanding of the full spectrum of co-morbidities to be expected in the group of patients with the disease of interest. It is usually a challenge to identify the less common events associated with the target disease, even if these events are severe. The purpose of this study is to identify co-morbidities associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) as compared with a control group, using a large health care database.
METHODS: Marketscan US claims database was used for this retrospective cohort study. Selected were records of persons

Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), is an enduring public health problem globally, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Several studies have suggested a role for host genetic susceptibility in increased risk for TB but results across studies have been equivocal. As part of a household contact study of Mtb infection and disease in Kampala, Uganda, we have taken a unique approach to the study of genetic susceptibility to TB, by studying three phenotypes. First, we analyzed culture confirmed TB disease compared to latent Mtb infection (LTBI) or lack of Mtb infection. Sec

BACKGROUND: The age-specific epidemiology of child and adolescent tuberculosis (TB) is poorly understood, especially in rural areas of East Africa. We sought to characterize the age-specific prevalence and predictors of TB infection among children and adolescents living in rural Uganda, and to explore the contribution of household TB exposure on TB infection.
METHODS: From 2015-2016 we placed and read 3,121 tuberculin skin tests (TST) in children (5-11 years old) and adolescents (12-19 years old) participating in a nested household survey in 9 rural Eastern Ugandan communities. TB infection w

BACKGROUND: HIV/AIDS pandemic is responsible for the resurgence of TB worldwide, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality. HIV and Mycobacterium tuberculosis have a synergistic interaction; each propagates progression of the other. Coinfection with HIV infection leads to difficulties in both the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis, increase risk of death, treatment failure and relapse.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study is to study the clinical, radiological profile of pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) in HIV-seropositive patients and their relationship to CD4 co

Identification of an immune response correlate for protection against bovine tuberculosis would greatly facilitate the rational development of an effective vaccine. However, finding such a correlate has been a daunting task. Vaccination/challenge studies in cattle provide an ideal platform to compare induction of immune response parameters following vaccination and challenge, and assess the correlation of these parameters with protection. Protection against tuberculosis requires a Th 1-type cell-mediated immune response and induction of an antigen-specific interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) response
