Usher syndrome (USH) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by combined deafness-blindness. It accounts for about 50% of all hereditary deafness blindness cases. Electrocochleographic recordings of action and summating potentials are widely used in the electrophysiological assessment of endolymphatic hydrops (ELH). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the presence of IgG antibodies directed to herpes simplex virus (HSV) in the perilymph of patients with Menière disease.
DESIGN: Antibodies to HSV, Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, and measles virus were analyzed in serum and perilymph samples by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. In 2012, we carried out a study in a large sample to understand the secondary injuries caused during the taking ear impressions for hearing aids. This study is a follow-up of previous research conducted in 1986 (285 medical institutions) and 1999 (98 medical institutions). We posted a questionnaire survey to the otolaryngology departments of 3,257 medical institutions. The response rate to the questionnaire was 62.9% (2,050 of the 3,257 institutions), and the results indicated that 301 of the 2050 institutions (14.7%) had experience with secondary injuries, with a total of 460 cases reported.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.
PATIENTS: Patients fitting American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery criteria for Ménière's disease who had failed conventional medical therapy between February 2002 and April 2004 and who were ready for surgical intervention.
INTERVENTION: Patients used the Meniett device as a nonsurgical alternative for Ménière's management.
