Associations Between Solitary Masturbation Parameters and Sexual Arousal in Partnered Sexual Activity.

Given the limited empirical evidence regarding the relationship between masturbation and sexual functioning, this study aimed to examine the association between multiple masturbation parameters-age of first masturbation, negative attitudes toward masturbation, solitary sexual desire, current frequency, and the intensity of the subjective orgasm experience-and self-reported sexual arousal within partnered sexual activity. Drawing on complementary and compensatory models, gender differences in these associations were also explored. A total of 1028 Spanish cisgender adults (469 men and 559 women;

Cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination among assigned female at birth transgender and gender-diverse individuals in South Korea: findings from the KITE cohort.

BACKGROUND: Limited evidence exists regarding sexual and reproductive health (SRH) utilization among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) populations in South Korea. This study examined cervical cancer screening and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination uptake among assigned female at birth (AFAB) TGD individuals and explored associated factors. METHODS: Data were derived from the Korean Initiative for Transgender Health Cohort Study (KITE), which recruited TGD participants from transgender-affirming healthcare facilities. Cervical cancer screening followed the Korean National Cancer Screeni

Concerns, Health Profiles, and Quality of Life of LGBTQIA+ Individuals in Maharashtra: A Mixed-Methods Study.

INTRODUCTION: The abbreviation LGBTQIA+, short for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, and asexual, unites a wide range of gender and sexual identities that are frequently marginalized in society. Compared to their peers and coworkers from heterosexual groups, they have less access to public health facilities, which causes physical, mental, social, and financial issues. Hence, the objectives of the study are to explore the concerns and evaluate the health profile and quality of life of LGBTQIA+ individuals in Maharashtra.  Materials and methods: Our study employed

Teaching Accurate Sex-related Biology: Approaches for More Socially Just Instruction.

Current undergraduate biology education does not usually reflect what is known about the diversity of sex, reproduction, and sexual behavior across the diversity of life, nor does it commonly address the human-specific diversity of gender identity and sexual, romantic, and related orientations. Instead, research indicates many courses rely on oversimplifications and overgeneralizations of sex-related content, aligned with socially dominant narratives and norms. While these simplifications may seem like good starting points to facilitate learning, they can lead to multiple kinds of harm. These

Male- and female-factor infertility and partners' quality of life during assisted reproductive technology: A dyadic actor-partner analysis.

BACKGROUND: Infertility constitutes a dyadic stressor, as it inherently involves both members of a couple; nevertheless, its psychological impact is frequently evaluated from an individual perspective. We tested whether etiologic diagnosis (male and female factors) is associated with both partners' quality of life (QoL) during assisted reproductive technology (ART). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study at the assisted reproduction center of a tertiary university hospital in southern Taiwan, enrolling married heterosexual couples undergoing ART who completed the Fertilit

Inequities in Bullying Victimization Among US High School Students in Years 2017, 2019, and 2021: An Intersectional Multilevel Analysis of Individual Heterogeneity and Discriminatory Accuracy With Random Effects.

PURPOSE: To examine inequities in bullying victimization across sex/gender, sexual identity, race/ethnicity, and obesity status among United States high school students in 2017, 2019, and 2021. METHODS: Data from the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System for 342,538 high school students were analyzed. Bullying victimization was defined as any in-school bullying or cyberbullying in the past 12 months. We used an intersectional multilevel analysis of individual heterogeneity and discriminatory accuracy via logistic regression with random effects, with strata defined by sex/gender, sexual iden

Unnoticed Entry, Noticed Transmission: Epidemiological Insights into China's First Clade Ib Monkeypox Virus Cluster.

BACKGROUND: The mpox outbreak caused by Clade Ib monkeypox virus (MPXV) spread rapidly in Central and East Africa and led the World Health Organization to declare the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). In response, China implemented enhanced surveillance measures; nevertheless, an ostensibly asymptomatic returning traveler with repeatedly negative screening tests initiated China's first documented Clade Ib mpox transmission cluster. METHODS: We conducted an epidemiological, clinical, environmental, and genomic investigation to characterize the transmission pa

Evaluating the potential health and economic impacts of chlamydia vaccination strategies in the United States: a mathematical modeling and cost-effectiveness simulation study.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis (chlamydia) is the most commonly reported sexually transmitted infection in the United States (US), causing substantial morbidity and costs despite effective treatment. Vaccination may be a promising prevention strategy, but its national epidemiologic and economic impact remains understudied. METHODS: We developed an age- and sex-structured compartmental model of heterosexual chlamydia transmission among US individuals aged 15-64 years from 2000 to 2075. The model was calibrated to adjusted annual chlamydia cases and validated against national prevalence data

Self-reported prevalence and correlates of sex as self-injury in a Swedish high school population.

BACKGROUND: Sex as self-injury (SASI) is a form of self-harm where sexual acts are used to cope with negative emotions, psychological distress or interpersonal difficulties, similar to other self-injurious behaviors like cutting or burning the skin. Despite growing recognition in Swedish society and healthcare, SASI lacks a standardized definition and remains under-researched. This study aimed to investigate the self-reported prevalence of SASI, motives and manifestations of the behavior and its association with emotional dysregulation, trauma symptoms, and abuse. METHOD: The study was part o

Unilateral chest wall hypertrophy in Gardner syndrome: an extremely rare osseous manifestation.

BACKGROUND: The majority of new HIV infections are acquired through heterosexual transmission. There is urgent need for prevention methods to compliment behavior change and condom use. Topical microbicide represent a potential strategy for reduction of HIV transmission in women. METHODS: Monthly Colposcopy evaluations were performed during pelvic examinations among 299 women enrolled in the Phase 2 portion of HPTN 035 study at four sites (1 in USA, 3 in Southern Africa). This was a phase 2/2b, multisite, randomized, and controlled clinical trial with four arms: BufferGel, 0.5% PRO2000 Gel, pl

Evolution and Possible Explanations for the Trends in New HIV Diagnoses in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, Compared to the Rest of Canada, 1985-2022.

BACKGROUND: Canada aims to end the HIV epidemic as a public health threat by 2030. However, the provinces Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba reported 564 new HIV diagnoses in 2021 and over 600 in 2022. This study describes changes in HIV epidemiology in these three provinces compared to the rest of Canada between 1985 and 2022. METHODS: This was an ecological study that used data from publicly available HIV reports published by the Governments of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Canada from the first reported HIV diagnoses to the latest available information. Variables of interest includ

Characterizing sociodemographic differences in substance use treatment need and receipt among pregnant women in the U.S.

OBJECTIVE: Sociodemographic disparities in SUD treatment need and receipt among women inform public health initiatives. While rates of SUD among pregnant women are lower than those who are not pregnant, an investigation of whether and how sociodemographic disparities of SUD treatment need and receipt among pregnant women can further accelerate SUD related risk prevention for both mothers and babies. METHOD: We analyzed data from pregnant women who completed the 2015-2019 National Survey of Drug Use and Health (unweighted N = 3,461). We used logistic regression models to test odds of 1) past-y

Safety and efficacy of the ShangRing for early infant male circumcision in the routine clinical setting.

INTRODUCTION: Male circumcision (MC) has been shown to decrease transmission of HIV and is a critical strategy to decrease its incidence in countries with high rates of heterosexually transmitted HIV. Early infant MC (EIMC), with single-use MC devices, could increase rates of MC in Sub-Saharan Africa. Our objective was to determine the safety, efficacy and satisfaction of ShangRing EIMC in resource-constrained environments. METHODS: Healthy male infants aged 1-60 days underwent ShangRing EIMC performed by non-physician clinicians in 14 sites in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The primary outcomes

Dual cross-sectional and longitudinal perspective on the continuum of HIV care to disentangle natural epidemic evolution from real progress, Belgium 2014-2022.

INTRODUCTION: This study provides a comprehensive overview of HIV care by combining cross-sectional and longitudinal continuum of care (CoC) analyses. METHODS: Using national surveillance data 2014-2022, a five-stage cross-sectional CoC was calculated among people living with HIV (incl. undiagnosed): diagnosed, linked to care, retained in care, on antiretroviral therapy (ART) and virally suppressed. For the longitudinal CoC, cumulative incidences (CI) were calculated for each transition. RESULTS: The study included 26 191 people living with HIV. By the end of 2022, an estimated 18 302 person

Alignment of PrEP Use With Potential HIV Exposure in Young Women and Men in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Despite high oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake among young heterosexual cisgender women, early discontinuation is frequent. It is unclear whether this aligns with potential HIV exposure. METHODS: Young women aged 16-25 years and ≥1 of their male partners were enrolled in separate but linked longitudinal HIV PrEP studies in Kampala, Uganda, from 2018 to 2021. Data on sexual behavior, PrEP use, sexually transmitted disease positivity, and Y chromosome DNA (Yc DNA; a marker for condomless sex) were collected at enrollment and quarterly visits. Potential HIV exposure was def
