The authors undertook a study of environmental and animal risk factors associated with Rift Valley fever (RVF) in south-west Saudi Arabia. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect the presence of immunoglobulin M (IgM) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against the RVF virus in serum samples from sentinel animals. In addition, a further 32 known IgM-positive serum samples were tested using the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to detect the RVF virus genome. The results were analysed using the univariate odds ratio (OR). To control for confounding, Mant

The efficient and accurate diagnosis of dengue, a major mosquito-borne disease, is of primary importance for clinical care, surveillance, and outbreak control. The identification of specific dengue virus serotype 1 (DENV-1) to DENV-4 can help in understanding the transmission dynamics and spread of dengue disease. The four rapid low-resource serotype-specific dengue tests use a simple sample preparation reagent followed by reverse transcription-isothermal recombinase polymerase amplification (RT-RPA) combined with lateral flow detection (LFD) technology. Results are obtained directly from clin

The spread of insect-borne animal virus diseases is influenced by a number of factors. Hosts migrate, move or are conveyed over long distances: vectors are carried on the wind for varying distances in search of hosts and breeding sites; weather and climate affect hosts and vectors through temperature, moisture and wind. As parasites of host and vector, viruses are carried by animals, birds and insects, and their spread can be correlated with the migration of hosts and the carriage of vectors on winds associated with the movements of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and warm winds to t

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Malaria remains a major health crisis in tropical regions, with Sub-Saharan Africa bearing the heaviest burden. While insecticide-treated nets and artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) have reduced cases, emerging parasite resistance to artemisinin threatens these gains. This review synthesizes evidence on how drug resistance impacts malaria transmission and control globally.
METHODS: This systematic review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines and was registered with PROSPERO (CRD420261336060). A comprehensive search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science, supp

Dengue fever is a vector-borne disease that is transmitted by the aedes aegypti mosquito. The disease is caused by four different viral serotypes which are DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4. Of these serotypes, DEN-1 and DEN-2 are the most prevalent, and their co-circulation presents complex disease dynamics due to the antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE) phenomenon as well as the cross-immunity interaction of these viral serotypes. In this study, we formulate a novel multi-strain sequential super-infection model that captures the primary and secondary infection dynamics with temporary cross immu

Targeted amplicon sequencing is a powerful and efficient tool for interrogating the Plasmodium falciparum genome, generating actionable data from infections to complement traditional malaria epidemiology. For maximum impact, genomic tools should be multi-purpose, robust, sensitive, and reproducible. We developed, characterized, and implemented MAD4HatTeR, an amplicon sequencing panel based on Multiplex Amplicons for Drug, Diagnostic, Diversity, and Differentiation Haplotypes using Targeted Resequencing, along with a bioinformatic pipeline for data analysis. Additionally, we introduce an analyt

BACKGROUND: Classical malaria models often focus solely on vector-borne transmission and employ integer-order dynamics that neglect memory effects. Yet malaria spread can also occur through non-vector exposure routes, and its progression is influenced by historical infection and immunity patterns. To capture these effects, a fractional-order modeling approach is required. METHODS: We develop a Caputo fractional-order malaria model of order [Formula: see text] that integrates both vector and non-vector transmission pathways while embedding memory effects in human and mosquito dynamics. Analytic

BACKGROUND: The behaviors and ontogeny of Aedes aegypti are closely related to the spread of diseases caused by dengue (DENV), chikungunya (CHIKV), Zika (ZIKV), and yellow fever (YFV) viruses. During the life cycle, Ae. aegypti undergoes drastic morphological, metabolic, and functional changes triggered by gene regulation and other molecular mechanisms. Some essential regulatory factors that regulate insect ontogeny have been revealed in other species, but their roles are still poorly investigated in the mosquito.
RESULTS: Our study identified 6 gene modules and their intramodular hub genes t

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease with dramatically increasing morbidity rate worldwide in decades. Since there is no specific treatment to date, early diagnosis is important for providing proper timely medical care to minimize mortality, and for the prompt initiation of public health control measures. NS5 is a potential biomarker for dengue virus infection due to its highly conserved and immunogenic properties. In this study, the DENV 2 NS5 full-length and the DENV 2 NS5 C-terminus RNA-dependent RNA polymerase domain fragment (NS5-C70) expression plasmids were constructed, and th

West Nile virus (WNV) is one of the most common causes of epidemic viral encephalitis in horses worldwide. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) are amongst the first to encounter the virus following a mosquito bite. This study aimed to elucidate the transcription kinetics of cytokine, Toll-like receptor (TLRs) and TLRs-associated genes following WNV challenge of equine PBMCs. PBMCs were challenged with an Australian strain of WNV (WNVNSW2011) and transcriptomes were quantified at 2, 6, 12 and 24 h post-infection (pi) using qRT-PCR. Type I and II interferons (IFNα, β and γ) mRNA transcrip

A qualitative study to investigate lymphatic filariasis related perceptions and practices that may be relevant for the design of appropriate health education and control programmes was conducted in four endemic villages in coastal Ghana. The villagers were aware of the common manifestations of filariasis, such as adenolymphangitis (ADL), lymphoedema, elephantiasis and hydrocele, which were specifically described with local terminology. ADL attacks were identified as the most dreaded health problem in the communities, and elephantiasis and hydrocele also ranked high in importance among reported

A field trial of permethrin-impregnated bed nets (PIBs) was conducted in 2 Afghan refugee villages in Pakistan. Nets were issued to only 10% of families (= 1398 people); this simulated a situation in which bed nets are gradually adopted by villagers in Afghanistan. A further 10% lacking bed nets were selected as controls from the same villages. An initial survey showed that 86% of household heads were aware that malaria was transmitted by mosquito bites, but only 2% had used bed nets before. Trial families were encouraged to attend the village health centres if they fell ill. Microscopy record

This paper reviews the evidence of a link between flood control and vector-borne disease in Bengal/Bangladesh. Malaria is historically associated with reduced flooding and embankment construction in the flood plains of Bengal. The land west and south of the Jamuna river was highly malarious in 1916 but is not so today. The lands east of the Jamuna now have a higher, though still small, risk. The reduction in health risk can be attributed to the intensification of land use and human population density. Although there are many mosquito species, the abundance of the former malaria vector appears

Oropouche virus (OROV) is an emerging arbovirus with increasing outbreaks in South America, yet its environmental drivers and potential range remain poorly understood. Using ecological niche modeling (ENM) with random forests, we assessed the environmental suitability of OROV and its primary vector, Culicoides paraensis, across Brazil and the Americas. We evaluated five pseudo-absence sampling techniques, considering pseudo-absence ratios, buffer radii, and density smoothing factors to determine the most effective modeling approach. Key environmental predictors included humidity, agricultural

Chikungunya virus (CHIKungunya Virus, CHIKV) is a mosquito-borne plus-stranded RNA virus. Adaptive mutations such as A226V in the E1 envelope protein of CHIKV significantly enhance the transmission efficiency of the virus in Aedes albostriae, leading to multiple rounds of epidemics around the world including the large-scale outbreak in Guangdong Province in 2025. After a viral infection, a significant proportion of patients will progress from acute arthralgia to chronic arthritis that persists. The pathogenesis of the disease involves the persistence of the virus in joint tissues, the persiste
