OBJECTIVES: To assess the impact of posterior corneal asphericity on postoperative calculation error using the Haigis-L and the Barrett formulas for eyes after laser in situ keratomileusis or photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).
METHODS: We assessed the mean absolute error (MAE) of two power calculation formulas, Barrett true-K and Haigis-L formulas, in a retrospective analysis of 34 eyes of 34 patients who underwent cataract surgery. We performed a regression analysis between corneal parameters (anterior and posterior Q values, Kmax, K1, and K2) and the MAE of each formula.
RESULTS: In the co

Fungal endophthalmitis is a rare condition often associated with poor prognosis. We present a case of postoperative acute fungal endophthalmitis caused by the yeast-like fungus Stephanoascus ciferrii (Candida ciferrii). The fungus was resistant to fluconazole, voriconazole, and amphotericin B but susceptible to caspofungin. Because the degree of vitreal penetration of caspofungin after its intravenous administration is unclear, we performed multiple intravitreal injections, first with 50 µg/0.1 ml and then with 250 µg/0.1 ml caspofungin. Despite the recurrence of symptoms, intravitreal injecti

BACKGROUND: Descemet membrane detachment (DMD) is a significant complication noted during or early after cataract surgery. Review of literature revealed a few cases of delayed-onset DMD with presentation ranging from weeks to months after cataract surgery but most of them were treated with pneumatic descemetopexy and a few ended in penetrating keratoplasty. We report this case, to highlight the usefulness of corneal venting incision with air tamponade in late-onset DMD cases not responding to pneumatic descemetopexy.
CASE PRESENTATION: A retrospective case review of a 66 year old male who pre

AIM: To explore the application of intraoperative wavefront aberrometry (IWA) for aphakia-based biometry using three existing formulae derived from autorefractive retinoscopy and introducing new improved formulae.
METHODS: In 74 patients undergoing cataract surgery, three repeated measurements of aphakic spherical equivalent (SE) were taken. All measurements were objectively graded for their quality and evaluated with the 'limits of agreement' approach. ORs were calculated and analysis of variance was applied. The intraocular lens (IOL) power that would have given the target refraction was ba

An Acrysof toric intraocular lens (IOL) and a capsular tension ring (CTR) were implanted in the highly myopic eye of a 74-year-old white man during cataract surgery. On the first postoperative day, the IOL was found 90 degrees from the required position, with a consequent high amount of astigmatism. A second procedure was performed and because it was not possible to secure the toric IOL in the correct position, an additional in-the-bag CTR was inserted, with an immediate optimal outcome. The IOL remained stable up to the final follow-up examination. Co-implantation of a toric IOL and a single
