Three-dimensional bioprinted culture platforms mimic the native microenvironment of tissues more accurately than two-dimensional cell cultures or animal models. Scaffold-free bioprinting eliminates many complications associated with traditional scaffold-dependent printing as well as provides better cell-to-cell interactions and long-term functionality. In this study, constructs were produced from bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) using a scaffold-free bioprinter. These constructs were cultured in either osteogenic, chondrogenic, a 50:50 mixture of osteogenic and chondrogenic

This study investigated how the bandwidths of resonances simulated by transmission-line models of the vocal tract compare to bandwidths measured from physical three-dimensional printed vowel resonators. Three types of physical resonators were examined: models with realistic vocal tract shapes based on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data, straight axisymmetric tubes with varying cross-sectional areas, and two-tube approximations of the vocal tract with notched lips. All physical models had hard walls and closed glottis so the main loss mechanisms contributing to the bandwidths were sound radi

The rapid development of tissue engineering technology has provided new methods for tracheal replacement. However, none of the previously developed biomimetic tracheas exhibit both the anatomy (separated-ring structure) and mechanical behavior (radial rigidity and longitudinal flexibility) mimicking those of native trachea, which greatly restricts their clinical application. Herein, we proposed a biomimetic scaffold with a separated-ring structure: a polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffold with a ring-hollow alternating structure was three-dimensionally printed as a framework, and collagen sponge was

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) extracted from fungal mycelium by four chemical methods (NaOH, H2SO4, formaldehyde-NaOH, glutaraldehyde-NaOH), three physical methods (heating, ultrasound, vibration), and a control method (centrifugation alone) were investigated. Results indicated formaldehyde-NaOH outperformed other methods with 186.6 ± 8.0 mg/g of polysaccharides and 23.2 ± 4.6 mg/g of protein extracted and ensured little contamination by intracellular substances. Thereafter, this method was applied in extracting EPS from a mixed fungal culture in the adaptation process with 0.5% (w

Nerve cell repair is a complex process influenced by genetic factors, damage severity, and treatment type. Although nerve tissue engineering has advanced, many scaffolds still fail to mimic the natural electrical properties of nerve tissue or deliver drugs effectively. To address these issues, this study presents a multifunctional scaffold designed to support nerve regeneration while reducing inflammation and pain. The scaffold was fabricated using 3D microextrusion printing, allowing precise control over geometry and composition. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and collagen (Col) provided biocompatib

Melanoma is a malignant type of skin cancer that originates from pigment-producing cells called melanocytes. Alongside its aggressive trajectory, it is characterized by metastasis. The lack of targeting ability and high toxicity in traditional chemotherapy, along with issues such as the dermal barrier and patient compliance, necessitate local and synergistic treatment approaches. Patches that are part of transdermal drug delivery systems and use hydrogel microneedles to deliver drugs noninvasively, locally, and synergistically, are a recently emerging treatment alternative. In this study, we d

Wound healing is a complex process that can be severely impaired in chronic or infected wounds. To overcome these challenges, we developed a bioinspired, double-layer asymmetric hydrogel scaffold combining a conductive hydrogel with an antibacterial electrospun fiber layer. The conductive hydrogel, composed of gelatin, Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS), and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), provides electrical conductivity under external electric fields, thereby promoting cell activity, migration, and tissue regeneration. CMCS further contributes antibacterial a

Achieving stable spinal fusion and efficient bone regeneration remains a significant challenge. Tissue-engineered materials offer a promising solution for enhancing bone repair. This study developed MXene/PLA/icaritin (MXPI) composite scaffolds by melt-blending Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets (with photothermal and drug-delivery functions), polylactic acid (PLA) resin, and the osteogenic agent icaritin (ICT). The composite granules were processed into fibrous materials via fused deposition modeling (FDM). Comprehensive characterization and comparative analyses were performed. In vitro experiments eva

The current investigation aims to address the limitations of conventional cancer therapy by developing an advanced, long-term drug delivery system using biocompatible Rose Bengal (RB)-loaded polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrices incorporated into 3D printed polycaprolactone (PCL) and polylactic acid (PLA) implants. The anticancer drug RB's high solubility and low lipophilicity require frequent and painful administration to the tumour site, limiting its clinical application. In this study, RB was encapsulated in a PVA (RB@PVA) matrix to overcome these challenges and achieve a localised and sustained

Biofilm formation on biological and material surfaces represents a heavy health and economic burden for both patient and society. To contrast this phenomenon, medical devices combining antibacterial and pro-wound healing abilities are a promising strategy. In the present work, Xanthan gum/Guar gum (XG/GG)-based scaffolds were tuned with thymol and Zn2+ to obtain wound dressings that combine antibacterial and antibiofilm properties and favour the healing process. The tuning process preserved the 3D extrusion-based printability of the XG/GG ink. Scaffolds swelling profile was assessed in PBS pH

It is crucial for the successful transplantation of large segmental bone defects to achieve rapid vascularization within bone scaffolds. However, there are certain limitations including uncontrolled angiogenesis and inadequate vascular function. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop bone scaffolds with functional vascular networks. In our study, porousβ-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) scaffolds with varying pore sizes were prepared by 3D printing technology, loaded with osteopontin derived peptide Ser-Val-Val-Tyr-Gly-Leu-Arg (SVVYGLR) to induce osteoinduction and angiogenesis. In vitro, th

Microtia-atresia is a congenital deformity affecting the external ear and ear canal that can present with varying degrees of severity and morbidity. Treatment occurs along a spectrum and primarily centers on improving aesthetic appearance. Many cases of microtia will not be effectively treated with conservative measures and will require some form of reconstruction. There are several options available, including porous polyethylene implants, autologous rib grafting, and autologous chondrocyte frameworks. Equally significant is the treatment of hearing loss, as many patients with microtia-atresi

Trachea stents are widely used to treat stenosis arising from various trachea injuries. However, they are associated with inflammation, re-stenosis, and tracheal obstruction. Seeking to overcome these problems, the development of an artificial trachea using tissue engineering has been explored. However, the artificial trachea did not mimic the natural rigidity and flexibility of the trachea and provide the micro-environment necessary for re-epithelialization. In this study, we developed a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) trachea scaffold that possesses a restoration characteristic, using flexi

Autotransplantation exhibits a number of advantages compared with other treatment options (ie, dental implants or fixed partial prostheses), such as greater resistance to occlusal loading, maintenance of the periodontal ligament and surrounding bone, and the potential for better esthetics. The aim of this study was to determine clinical outcomes for autotransplanted teeth with complete root formation using 3-dimensional-printed guiding templates and tooth replicas. Twenty-seven third molars with completely formed roots were autotransplanted. Each donor tooth and recipient site were examined cl
