Vaccination inequities among children 12-23 months in India: An analysis of inter-state differences.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that socioeconomic and demographic risk factors in children are additive and lead to increasingly negative impacts on vaccination coverage. The goal of this study is to examine if different combinations of four risk factors (infant sex, birth order, maternal education level, and family wealth status) vary by state among children 12-23 months in India and to determine the impact of ≥ 1 risk factor on differences in state vaccination rates. METHODS: Using data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) conducted in India between 2005 and 2006 (NFHS-3) …

Implementing Preeclampsia Screening in Switzerland (IPSISS): First Results from a Multicentre Registry.

INTRODUCTION: The Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF) London developed a first trimester combined screening algorithm for preterm preeclampsia (pPE) that allows a significantly higher detection of pregnancies at risk compared to conventional screening by maternal risk factors only. The aim of this trial is to validate this screening model in the Swiss population in order to implement this screening into routine first trimester ultrasound and to prescribe low-dose aspirin 150 mg (LDA) in patients at risk for pPE. Therefore, a multicentre registry study collecting and screening pregnancy outcome dat

Risk factors for preterm birth: an umbrella review of meta-analyses of observational studies.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth defined as delivery before 37 gestational weeks is a leading cause of neonatal and infant morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study is to summarize the evidence from meta-analyses of observational studies on risk factors associated with PTB, evaluate whether there are indications of biases in this literature, and identify which of the previously reported associations are supported by robust evidence. METHODS: We searched PubMed and Scopus until February 2021, in order to identify meta-analyses examining associations between risk factors and PTB. For each meta-an

The correlation between pregnancy, disease activity and adverse pregnancy outcomes in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, our pregnant systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) cohort, which was under medical surveillance of both our Rheumatology and Obstetrics departments, was analyzed. We intended to determine the effects of pregnancy on disease activity and the correlation between disease flares and adverse pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: One hundred sixty eight pregnancy data involving 136 patients with SLE were examined. Cumulative clinical, laboratory, and serological parameters were described. Disease activity and flares were calculated using the systemic lupus erythematosus disease activi

Comparison of mortality and short-term outcomes between classic, intubation-surfactant-extubation, and less invasive surfactant administration methods of surfactant replacement therapy.

BACKGROUND: Intubation-Surfactant-Extubation (InSurE) and less invasive surfactant administration (LISA) are alternative surfactant replacement therapy methods for reducing the complications associated with invasive mechanical ventilation. This study aimed to compare the Classic, InSurE, and LISA methods in Very-Low-Birth-Weight infants (VLBWIs) in South Korea. METHODS: The Korean Neonatal Network (KNN) enrolled VLBWIs born between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2020. They were analyzed retrospectively to compare the duration of respiratory support, length of hospitalization, mortality, and

Predicting risk of postpartum haemorrhage during the intrapartum period in a general obstetric population.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate (both internally and externally) a prediction model examining a combination of risk factors in order to predict postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) in a general obstetric Irish population of singleton pregnancies. STUDY DESIGN: We used data from the National Maternal and Newborn Clinical Management System (MN-CMS), including all singleton deliveries at Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH), Ireland during 2019. We defined PPH as an estimated blood loss of ≥ 1000 ml following the birth of the baby. Multivariable logistic regression with backward stepwise selecti

Predictors of transient congenital primary hypothyroidism: data from the German registry for congenital hypothyroidism (AQUAPE "HypoDok").

Neonatal screening for congenital primary hypothyroidism (CH) may not distinguish between transient (TCH) and permanent dysfunction (PCH), causing potential overtreatment and concerns in affected families. To specify the indication for interruption of therapy, we analysed the German registry "HypoDok" for infants with CH, which oversees 1625 patients from 49 participating centres in Germany and Austria from 1997 until today. A total of 357 patients with a thyroid gland in loco typico were identified and retrospectively grouped according to cessation (TCH, n = 24) or continuation (PCH, n = 333)

Maternal obesity increases the risk and severity of NAFLD in offspring.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Maternal obesity has been linked to the development of cardiovascular disease and diabetes in offspring, but its relationship to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is unclear. METHODS: Through the nationwide ESPRESSO cohort study we identified all individuals ≤25 years of age in Sweden with biopsy-verified NAFLD diagnosed between 1992 and 2016 (n = 165). These were matched by age, sex, and calendar year with up to 5 controls (n = 717). Through linkage with the nationwide Swedish Medical Birth Register (MBR) we retrieved data on maternal early-pregnancy BMI, and possi

Human Milk Sampling Protocols Affect Estimation of Infant Lipid Intake.

BACKGROUND: Human milk (HM) lipid content is highly variable, and infants consume different volumes of milk. This makes precise sampling and calculation of the infant lipid intake problematic. OBJECTIVES: In order to describe inaccuracies of estimates of lipid content introduced by various sampling protocols, we compared the true infant lipid intake with estimated intakes using different milk sampling protocols. METHODS: Monthly milk samples (n = 1026) from months 1 to 6 of lactation were collected from 20 healthy, exclusively breastfeeding women. Infant lipid intake was measured by 24-hour

Factors associated with intrapartum ZigZag pattern of fetal heart rate: A retrospective one-year cohort study of 5150 singleton childbirths.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies suggest that intrapartum ZigZag pattern of fetal heart rate (FHR) is significantly associated with cord blood acidaemia and neonatal complications. For the clinical significance of this pattern, it is mandatory that ZigZag episodes in cardiotocographic (CTG) recording are correctly identified. The aim of the present study was to examine maternal, fetal and delivery-related factors that could explain the occurrence of ZigZag pattern of FHR during the last 2 h of labour in a large obstetric cohort. STUDY DESIGN: CTG recordings from 5150 singleton childbirths at ≥33 we
