A patient with allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis caused by Aspergillus fumigatus and Candida albicans.

Allergic Bronchopulmonary Mycosis (ABPM) is an exagregated immunologic response to fungal colonization in the lower airways. It may cause by many kinds of fungal, but Aspergillus fumigatus is the most common cause of ABPM, although other Aspergillus and other fungal organisms, like Candida albicans, have been implicated. Aspergllus fumigatus and Candida albicans may be found as outdoor and indoor fungi, and cause the sensitization, elicitation of the disease pathology, and its clinical manifestations. Several diagnostic procedurs may be impicated to support the diagnosis of ABPM caused by Aspe

Plants respond to pathogen infection by enhancing the antifungal gene expression of root-associated bacteria.

Plant health and fitness widely depend on interactions with soil microorganisms. Some bacteria such as pseudomonads can inhibit pathogens by producing antibiotics, and controlling these bacteria could help improve plant fitness. In the present study, we tested whether plants induce changes in the antifungal activity of root-associated bacteria as a response to root pathogens. We grew barley plants in a split-root system with one side of the root system challenged by the pathogen Pythium ultimum and the other side inoculated with the biocontrol strain Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0. We used repor

Cost-effectiveness of quetiapine with lithium or divalproex for maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar I disorder is a recurrent illness that affects 1% of the US population and constitutes a large economic burden. Few studies have investigated the cost-effectiveness of maintenance treatment options. The objective of this analysis was to assess the cost-effectiveness of quetiapine (QTP) in combination with lithium (Li) or divalproex (DVP) compared with that of Li or DVP alone for maintenance treatment of bipolar disorder. METHODS: The cost-effectiveness of maintenance treatment with QTP in combination with Li or DVP was compared with placebo (PBO) in combination with Li or

Genome-wide pharmacogenomic analysis of response to treatment with antipsychotics.

Schizophrenia is an often devastating neuropsychiatric illness. Understanding the genetic variation affecting response to antipsychotics is important to develop novel diagnostic tests to match individual schizophrenia patients to the most effective and safe medication. In this study, we use a genome-wide approach to detect genetic variation underlying individual differences in response to treatment with the antipsychotics olanzapine, quetiapine, risperidone, ziprasidone and perphenazine. Our sample consisted of 738 subjects with DSM-IV schizophrenia who took part in the Clinical Antipsychotic

FDG positron emission tomography imaging of drug-induced pneumonitis.

Several studies have reported the findings of fluorine-18-labeled fluoro-2-deoxy-D: -glucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) in benign lung disease with diffuse pulmonary injury; however, the characteristics and effectiveness of FDG-PET imaging for interstitial pneumonitis have not been substantiated. We report two cases of drug-induced pneumonitis in two patients treated for breast cancer who were diagnosed by FDG-PET examination. Both the cases showed diffuse interstitial infiltration in the bilateral lungs on computed tomography, but the degree of FDG accumulation was different. It i

What CATIE found: results from the schizophrenia trial.

The authors provide an overview of the Clinical Antipsychotic Trials of Intervention Effectiveness (CATIE) sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health. CATIE was designed to compare a proxy first-generation antipsychotic, perphenazine, to several newer drugs. In phase 1 of the trial, consenting patients were randomly assigned to receive olanzapine, perphenazine, quetiapine, risperidone, or ziprasidone for up to 18 months on a double-blind basis. Patients with tardive dyskinesia were excluded from being randomly assigned to perphenazine and were assigned to one of the four second-gener

Effect of indacaterol, a novel long-acting beta2-agonist, on isolated human bronchi.

Indacaterol is a novel beta2-adrenoceptor agonist in development for the once-daily treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The present study evaluated the relaxant effect of indacaterol on isolated human bronchi obtained from lungs of patients undergoing surgery for lung carcinoma. Potency (-logEC50), maximal relaxant effect (Emax) and onset of action were determined at resting tone. Duration of action was determined against cholinergic neural contraction induced by electrical field stimulation (EFS). At resting tone, -logEC50 and Emax values were 8.82+/-0.41 and 77+/-5

Thyroid function in treatment-resistant schizophrenia patients treated with quetiapine, risperidone, or fluphenazine.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid dysfunction is relatively common in patients with schizophrenia, possibly related to a genetic linkage of the disorders and to antipsychotic treatment. Quetiapine has been implicated as causing some degree of thyroid function changes, yet it remains unclear as to what extent or why these changes may occur. Furthermore, the need for thyroid function monitoring in patients taking this medication is not definitive. METHOD: Thyroid function was assessed in 38 adult DSM-IV-diagnosed schizophrenia patients after 6 weeks of prospective, double-blind, randomized treatment with que

Inhibition by gomisin C (a lignan from Schizandra chinensis) of the respiratory burst of rat neutrophils.

1. The possible mechanisms of action of the inhibitory effect of gomisin C on the respiratory burst of rat neutrophils in vitro was investigated. 2. The peptide formyl-Met-Leu-Phe (FMLP) induced superoxide anion (O2-) formation and O2 consumption, which was inhibited by gomisin C in a concentration-dependent manner (IC50 21.5 +/- 4.2 micrograms ml-1 for O2- formation). Gomisin C also suppressed O2- formation and consumption at low concentrations of phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) with an IC50 value of 26.9 +/- 2.1 micrograms ml-1 for O2- formation. However, gomisin C did not affect the respons

Low-Thujone A. absinthium L. (Wormwood) Essential Oils and Extracts with Potential Antioxidative/Prooxidant Activity.

Nowadays, the global demand for medicinal plants, including A. absinthium L. (wormwood), has increased considerably, leading to significant pressure on their wild populations and the biodiversity of ecosystems. Consequently, the rates of exploitation may exceed those of natural regeneration. This destructive process can be reduced by cultivating plants with the desired secondary metabolites by transferring them from their natural habitats. The present study investigates phytochemistry and the potential antioxidative/prooxidant activity of low-thujone A. absinthium plants. The chemical composit

Hepatitis B virus genome mutations in precore and basal core promoter regions among HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B patients with high viral load in Indonesia.

Hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) is widely used as a marker for active HBV replication and serves as a surrogate for HBV DNA > 200,000 IU/mL to determine eligibility for tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) prophylaxis to prevent vertical transmission, according to WHO guidelines. However, some HBeAg-negative patients still harbor high viral loads. Mutations in the precore (PC) and basal core promoter (BCP) regions may reduce or abolish HBeAg expression without necessarily suppressing viral replication. Next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based characterization of these mutations remains limited in I

Examining facilitators, barriers, and social support in PrEP uptake and utilization for young African women: implications for HIV prevention.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in sub-Saharan Africa experience disproportionately high HIV incidence, making pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) a critical prevention strategy. While perceived HIV risk is known to influence PrEP initiation and continuation, the role of social support in shaping PrEP use among AGYW remains insufficiently understood. METHODS: This study presents a secondary analysis of qualitative interview data collected as part of HPTN 082, an open-label PrEP trial conducted between 2016 and 2018 in Harare, Zimbabwe, and Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Afr
