BACKGROUND: Oncomelania hupensis hupensis is the only intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum, the causative agent of schistosomiasis in China and is therefore of significant medical and veterinary health importance. Although tremendous progress has been achieved, there remains an understudied area of approximately 2.06 billion m2 of potential snail habitats. Rooster semen cryopreservation is a useful method to utilize semen samples for artificial insemination in commercial flocks, but with use of the freezing-thawing process there is a reduction in the quality and fertilization capacity of rooster spermatozoa post-thawing. The aim of the current study was to investigate the efficacy of the mitochondria-targeted antioxidant Mito-TEMPO on rooster sperm quality and fertilization capacity after conducting the freezing-thawing processes. INTRODUCTION: This study compared the thermal balance of spinal cord injured (SCI) divers and able-bodied (AB) divers during recreational cold-water dives.
METHODS: Ten divers (5 AB, 5 SCI) in matched pairs dived in a shallow lake (temperature 6°C) for 30 to 36 min wearing 5 mm 'Long John' neoprene wetsuits. A gastrointestinal temperature radio pill recorded gastro-intestinal temperature (Tgi) prior to, immediately after and at 5, 10, 15, 30, 60, 120 min post-dive. Subjective ratings of temperature perception were recorded concomitantly using a visual analogue scale (VAS).

INTRODUCTION: North American guidelines propose 125 mg acetazolamide twice daily as the recommended prophylactic dose to prevent acute mountain sickness (AMS). To our knowledge, a dose lower than 125 mg twice daily has not been studied.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective, double-blind, randomized, noninferiority trial of trekkers to Everest Base Camp in Nepal. Participants received the reduced dose of 62.5 mg twice daily or the standard dose of 125 mg twice daily.
