Dentists' Awareness of Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (Risk Factors, Drugs, and Prevention) in the Republic of Croatia.

INTRODUCTION: Antiresorptive drugs (AR) have been used for many years in the treatment of various bone conditions such as osteoporosis, osteopenia, Paget's disease, bone metastases, multiple myeloma and the associated malignant hypercalcemia. As a side effect of AR therapy, medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw, which affects the mandible more commonly than the maxilla, (MRONJ) has become an increased risk regarding patients' health and quality of life. The incidence of osteonecrosis has increased significantly in the last few years. One of the main methods of the disease prevention is t

Prevalence of bisphosphonate associated osteonecrosis of the jaws in multiple myeloma patients.

BACKGROUND: Bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis of the jaws (BP-ONJ) is an adverse effect of bisphosphonate treatment with varying reported incidence rates. METHODS: In two neighboring German cities, prevalence and additional factors of the development of BP-ONJ in multiple myeloma patients with bisphosphonates therapy were recorded using a retrospective (RS) and cross-sectional study (CSS) design. For the RS, all patients treated from Jan. 2000--Feb. 2006 were contacted by letter. In the CSS, all patients treated from Oct. 2006--Mar. 2008 had a physical and dental examination. Additional

Pediatric Drug Development: Reviewing Challenges and Opportunities by Tracking Innovative Therapies.

The paradigm of pediatric drug development has been evolving in a "carrot-and-stick"-based tactic to address population-specific issues. However, the off-label prescription of adult medicines to pediatric patients remains a feature of clinical practice, which may compromise the age-appropriate evaluation of treatments. Therefore, the United States and the European Pediatric Formulation Initiative have recommended applying nanotechnology-based delivery systems to tackle some of these challenges, particularly applying inorganic, polymeric, and lipid-based nanoparticles. Connected with these, adv

Adapted physical activity for hematology inpatients: focus on lean mass gain.

Adapted physical activity (APA) has become an essential asset in the care of patients with cancer. Although its positive impact has mainly been studied regarding quality of life, few studies have focused on changes in lean mass (LM) and its determinants. This study reports the results of an APA program for inpatients in the hematology department of Nice University Hospital (France). Body composition analyses and physical tests were performed at admission and discharge. A total of 123 patients were analyzed with relative LM gain as the primary outcome. Over a median hospitalization duration of

The aim of this study was to investigate inter-observer agreement of radiologists with different levels of expertise in reporting whole-body MRI performed along MY-RADS criteria in myeloma at baseline and in evaluating response to therapy to better certify the use of these criteria. The Future of Oncology in Psychiatric Medications.

Recent years have provided numerous reports on the mechanisms of action of psychiatric medications (antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, and antidementia drugs) that directly inhibit the growth of cancer cells, as well as on their indirect effects on the psyche and immune system, and their supportive effects on chemotherapeutic agents. The mechanisms of the anticancer activity of psychiatric drugs include inhibition of dopamine and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors that work via signaling pathways (PI3K/AKT/mTOR/NF-κB, ERK, Wnt/ß-catenin, and bcl2), metabolic pathways (ornithine dec

Oral squamous cell carcinoma vs. medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw in patients assuming bone-modifying agents: a diagnostic challenge in a multi-hospital case series.

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in the diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), most cases are diagnosed in advanced stages, influencing negatively the patient's prognosis. The absence of specific signs and symptoms contributes to the diagnostic delay of OSCC, often leading to confusion with various oral conditions, including, in patients with a history of bone modifying agents (BMA) and/or anti-angiogenic (AA) molecules, the Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ). Arrhythmias and Device Therapies in Cardiac Amyloidosis.

Cardiac amyloidosis is caused by amyloid fibrils that deposit in the myocardial interstitium, causing restrictive cardiomyopathy and eventually death. The electromechanical, inflammatory, and autonomic changes due to amyloid deposition result in arrhythmias. Atrial fibrillation is by far the most common arrhythmia. The rate control strategy is generally poorly tolerated due to restrictive filling physiology and heart rate dependance, favoring adoption of the rhythm control strategy. Anticoagulation for stroke prophylaxis is warranted, irrespective of CHA2DS2-VASc score in patients with a favor

Global disparities in drug-related adverse events of patients with multiple myeloma: a pharmacovigilance study.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a complex hematological malignancy of clonal plasma cells driven by alterations to the chromosomal material leading to uncontrolled proliferation in the bone marrow. Ethnic and racial disparities persist in the prevalence, diagnosis, management, and outcomes of MM. These disparities are multifaceted and intersect with various factors, including demographics, geography, socioeconomic status, genetics, and access to healthcare. This study utilized the openFDA human drug adverse events (AEs) to analyze global data pertaining to MM patients and patterns of treatment-relate

Burden of noncommunicable diseases among children and adolescents aged 10-24 years in China, 1990-2019: A population-based study.

China has hundreds of millions of children and adolescents aged 10-24 years, accounting for one-sixth of their total counterparts worldwide. We perform this study to clarify the priority of noncommunicable disease (NCD) control among youth in China via the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019. The highest disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) from NCDs among youth in China remain in mental disorders, while the most increasing incidence is from diabetes and kidney diseases during 1990-2019. Bullying victimization and high BMI are the top risk factors for DALYs from mental disorders and diabete

Can type 1 diabetes be an unexpected complication of obesity?

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is one of the most common chronic autoimmune diseases, characterized by absolute insulin deficiency caused via inflammatory destruction of the pancreatic β-cell. Genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors play a role in the development of diseases. Almost ⅕ of cases involve people under the age of 20. In recent years, the incidence of both T1D and obesity has been increasing, especially among children, adolescents, and young people. In addition, according to the latest study, the prevalence of overweight or obesity in people with T1D has increased significantly. The r

The physical environment of a treatment centre may impact the well-being of patients and their perceptions of care. This study aimed to identify haematological cancer patients' perceptions of supportive design elements in the hospital they attended and associations with self-reported mood or well-being. Health Equity Among Black Women in the United States.

Black women in the United States have experienced substantial improvements in health during the last century, yet health disparities persist. These health disparities are in large part a reflection of the inequalities experienced by Black women on a host of social and economic measures. In this paper, we examine the structural contributors to social and economic conditions that create the landscape for persistent health inequities among Black women. Demographic measures related to the health status and health (in)equity of Black women are reviewed. Current rates of specific physical and mental
