Subtyping of Adolescents with School Refusal Behavior: Exploring Differences Across Profiles in Self-Concept.

Not all adolescents with school attendance problems attribute their behavior to the same causes. Knowing the subtypes of students who reject school and their relationship with new variables, such as self-concept, is an unresolved task. This study aimed to identify different school refusal behavior profiles and to determine whether these profiles differed from each other based on the scores of the eleven dimensions of self-concept (Physical appearance, Physical abilities, Parent relations, Same-sex relations, Opposite-sex relations, Honesty, Emotional stability, Self-esteem, Verbal, Math, and G

Paternal depression and child externalizing behaviors: A meta-analysis.

Although there is a consensus that maternal depression is strongly related to child externalizing behaviors, research on the association between paternal depression and child externalizing behaviors is mixed. Some research shows that paternal depressive symptoms are positively associated with symptoms of externalizing behaviors, including oppositional-defiant behavior, conduct problems, and overall externalizing behavior, while other studies failed to find an association, or demonstrated a weak or negative association. Given that the most recent meta-analysis on paternal depression and child e

Eating problems in people with dementia with Lewy bodies: Associations with various symptoms and the physician's understanding.

OBJECTIVES: Eating problems frequently occur in people with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), but few studies have investigated the clinical background of this phenomenon. This study examined the relationship between eating problems and various symptoms of DLB and the relation between the treatment needs for DLB people with eating problems and the understanding of their eating problems by caregivers and physicians. DESIGN, MEASUREMENTS, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a subanalysis of a cross-sectional, questionnaire-based survey study. Two hundred sixty-one subjects with DLB were divided into subj

Self and parent-reported sleep problems of adolescents with childhood conduct problems and comorbid psychological problems.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood conduct problems (CP) are characterized by maladaptive externalizing behaviors and are linked with poor sleep. CP are highly comorbid with other psychological problems, including attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and depression, which are also associated with disturbed sleep. The present study examined if childhood CP and comorbid depressive and/or attentional-hyperactivity problems were prospectively associated with parent and self-reported sleep difficulties in adolescence. METHODS: Participants (N = 744; 53% boys) from an ongoing longitudinal study in Québec,

Toxic/problematic masculinity: A critical appraisal of its role in CBT.

Recent years have seen the psychological community focus on traditional masculinity as a problem that needs to be addressed. Concurrently, cognitive behavioral therapists have increasingly been women or men who identify with feminist theory. Concerns have been raised that good intentions to address women's issues have transmogrified into open anti-male bias even as men's functioning has declined, including their enrollment in the behavioral health professions. Portraying traditional masculinity as "toxic" is likely to cause harm, not only in stigmatizing many men and their families, but also b

Childhood Sexual Abuse and Adult Sexual Risk Behavior: A Review and Critique.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a global problem with serious repercussions for survivors in various domains of adult interpersonal functioning, including sexual risk behavior. This review aimed to summarize findings from the recent literature on the connections between CSA and later adult sexual risk behaviors (e.g., unprotected intercourse, sexually transmitted infection [STSI] diagnosis). The sexual risk behaviors consistently associated with CSA were having sex under the influence of alcohol/substances and reports of concurrent sexual partners/infidelity. Notably, studies investigating the

[The treatment of non-chemical addictions].

Today, there are no standards of therapy for non-chemical (behavioral) addictions. The article examines in detail modern psychological (classes in the 12 step program groups, various psychotherapeutic interventions) and pharmacological (antidepressants, opioid receptor antagonists, normotimics, glutamatergic agents, etc.) approaches to the treatment of pathological gambling. The possibilities of therapy of love and sexual addiction are analyzed. Separately, the problems of correction of the so-called socially acceptable addictions, as well as Internet addictions, are considered. The extremely

[Not Available].

Although dopamine replacement therapy has been used in Parkinson's disease since the 1960s, it is only recently that behavioral disorders associated with these drugs have been described. Gathered under the term "behavioral addiction", they include impulse control disorders, dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS), and punding. Whereas addiction per se occurs almost exclusively with levodopa, impulse control disorders appear preferentially during dopamine agonist therapy. The prevalence of these disorders is estimated to be 10-17% in Parkinson's disease, a rate far higher than in the general popu

Know thyself: real-world behavioral correlates of self-appraisal accuracy.

Accurate appraisal of one's own abilities is one metacognitive skill considered to be an important factor affecting learning and behavior in childhood. The present study measured self-appraisal accuracy in children using tasks of executive function, and investigated relations between self-appraisal and informant ratings of real-world behaviors measured by the BRIEF. We examined self-appraisal accuracy on fluency tasks in 91 children ages 10-17. More accurate self-appraisal was correlated with fewer informant ratings of real-world behavior problems in inhibition and shifting, independent of act

[Stigmatization of language impaired children from the parents' perspective].

Stigmatization can strongly affect the social integration of children and adolescents with developmental and behavioral disorders. The goal of the study was to investigate negative and positive labeling of speech-language impaired children as perceived by their parents. We analyzed 386 parental questionnaires on stigmatization by and support from other children, family members and other adults. Half of the parents reported stigmatization of their child. They perceived negative labeling and exclusion most frequently in the child's peer group, but also among family members. Support was more comm

[Diagnosis of psychological and behavioural disorders in Alzheimer's disease].

Although Alzheimer's disease has long been considered mainly a cognitive disorder, behavioral and psychological symptoms are present from its onset and at all the stages of the disease in most patients. They must be identified from the beginning because they orient the diagnosis. They include affective and emotional disorders, delusions and hallucinations, disorders of instinctual behavior and behavioral problems. The best tool for assessing them is the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI). They are generally related to neurobiological aspects of the disease but may, especially when acute, have mu

Catatonia induced by levetiracetam.

Levetiracetam (Keppra) is a novel antiepileptic drug approved as adjunctive treatment for adults with partial onset seizures. Although the drug is generally well tolerated, behavioral side effects have been reported in variable frequency. Most behavioral problems are mild in nature (agitation, hostility, anxiety, emotional lability, apathy, depression) and quickly resolve with discontinuation of medication. However, serious psychiatric adverse events may also occur with rare cases of psychosis and suicidal behavior. We report here the case of a 43-year-old woman who developed symptoms compatib

[Two cases of adult Down syndrome treated with selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor for behavior disorders].

Adult patients with Down syndrome show psychological symptoms and early senility. Improving their environment and dealing with their complaints and stress should first address their behavioral problems, such as self-injury, depression, aggression and outbursts. Pharmacological treatment may also be tried for behavioral disorders. Individuals with Down syndrome demonstrate neurotransmitter changes such as the loss of acetylcholine, norepinephrine, and serotonin (5-HT) with increasing age. Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI) is effective for depression and panic disorders. We report h

Influence of punishment, emotional rejection, child abuse, and broken home on aggression in adolescence: an examination of aggressive adolescents in Germany.

The results of this study provide evidence for the importance of psychosocial risks in childhood for aggressive behavior in adolescence. This study demonstrated that aggressive adolescents differed from a nonaggressive control group in an increased exposure to prior psychotraumatic events, such as sexual abuse (tendency), physical abuse, and broken homes. However, in predicting later aggressive behavior, long-term and chronically effective negative living conditions seem of greater importance. Parenting behavior which includes harsh punishment and emotional rejection as well as separation of t

Examination of the AHA!-Illness relation in male and female university students from Australia, India, and the United States.

The search for the link between negative emotions and later health problems continues to be a dominant theme in behavioral medicine. Although researchers have identified significant relations between illness and anger, most studies focus selectively on one anger domain: either the affective, attitudinal, or behavioral component. In this study, we first related all three components of the AHA! (anger, hostility, and aggressive behavior) syndrome to somatic complaint reports in a male and female young adult population drawn from three countries. In subsequent analyses, we related multidimensiona

Covariation of the anxious-depressed syndrome during adolescence: separating fact from artifact.

Nosological (symptom overlap) and methodological (informant) artifact in the covariation of an empirically derived syndrome of anxious-depressed symptoms with 7 other syndromes of emotional and behavior problems was examined in reports by parents, teachers, and adolescents on a nationally representative sample of 908 adolescents. Although minor symptom overlap was observed and the effects of informant were significant, the anxious-depressed syndrome covaried significantly with all other syndromes after controlling for these effects. Indices of covariation controlling for informant effects were

The impact of synthesis teaching and parent training with mothers of conduct-disordered children.

A procedure to enhance the impact of parent training with multistressed mother-child dyads was explored with 29 clinic-referred dyads. The procedure, called synthesis teaching, was provided for one randomly selected group of dyads, while the other group was engaged in problem discussions about their children. Both groups received parent training as the principal intervention for the mothers' conduct-disordered children. Results showed that these interventions had no effects on dyads in the clinic setting, but had a progressively more significant effect at home for the synthesis teaching group.

[Agoraphobia and panic attacks. Biological and behavioral approaches].

Behavioral and biological issues in agoraphobia are reviewed. New classifications of agoraphobia based on longitudinal studies appear promising. Genetical studies bring some data suggesting that agoraphobia and panick attacks may be a familial and genetical disease. The effects of antidepressants on agoraphobia and panick attacks are still a disputed issue. Exposure in vivo appears as the effective component of behavioral treatment of anticipatory anxiety and allows a significant withdrawal of medication (eg antidepressant and/or benzodiazepine). A personal study on 27 agoraphobia cases is rep

Prevalence and Characterization of Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder in a Pediatric Population.

OBJECTIVE: Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a relatively new feeding and eating disorder category in DSM-5 characterized by extreme food avoidance/restriction. Much is unknown about ARFID, with limited understanding of its prevalence and comorbidities in general pediatric populations. This study aimed to classify ARFID prevalence and characteristics in children within the Generation R Study, a population-based Dutch cohort (N = 2,862). METHOD: ARFID was assessed via an Index that comprised parent-reported questionnaires and researcher-assessed measures of picky eating, ene
