Pacopampa: Early evidence of violence at a ceremonial site in the northern Peruvian highlands.

OBJECTIVES: Pacopampa, a ceremonial complex in Peru's northern highlands, reveals early evidence of trauma in the Middle to Late Formative Period coinciding with the emergence of social stratification in the area. We examine the prevalence of trauma in human remains found at the site and present evidence of the circumstances surrounding the deaths of individuals who lived during the early stages of Andean civilization. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The materials are the remains of 104 individuals (38 non-adult and 66 adult) from the Middle to Late Formative Periods. We explored trauma macroscopicall

Internal rotation deformity and tardy ulnar nerve palsy after supracondylar humeral fracture.

Internal rotation deformity may contribute to the onset of tardy ulnar nerve palsy after a supracondylar fracture. We measured the angle of deformity in five patients with nerve palsy using an electrogoniometer and compared it with that of patients without palsy. Varus deformity of patients with nerve palsy was 23 degrees +/- 15.2 degrees (mean +/- SD), and that of patients without palsy was 12 degrees +/- 10.9 degrees. No significant difference was seen between the two groups. Internal rotation deformity of patients with nerve palsy was 16 degrees +/- 4.2 degrees, and that of patients without

Efficacy of 3D-printed surgical guides in the correction of pediatric cubitus varus deformity: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cubitus varus is a frequent post-traumatic deformity in children, typically resulting from malunion of supracondylar humeral fractures. Despite the availability of various osteotomy techniques, achieving precise and reproducible correction remains challenging. Recently, 3-dimensional (3D) printing-guided osteotomy has gained attention for improving surgical accuracy and outcomes. This study aimed to systematically evaluate the clinical effectiveness and safety of 3D-guided corrective osteotomy in pediatric cubitus varus in comparison with conventional surgical techniques. METHODS:

Breed susceptibility for common surgically treated orthopaedic diseases in 12 dog breeds.

BACKGROUND: A retrospective case-control study was conducted to estimate breed predisposition for common orthopaedic conditions in 12 popular dog breeds in Norway and Sweden. Orthopaedic conditions investigated were elbow dysplasia (ED); cranial cruciate ligament disease (CCLD); medial patellar luxation (MPL); and fractures of the radius and ulna. Dogs surgically treated for the conditions above at the Swedish and Norwegian University Animal Hospitals between the years 2011 and 2015 were compared with a geographically adjusted control group calculated from the national ID-registries. Not Just Another "Found Down": Concomitant Upper Arm and Gluteal Compartment Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Compartment syndrome is often considered in patients with long-bone fractures and soft-tissue injuries, but is not as commonly associated with a period of unconsciousness. CASE REPORT: A 65-year-old man was brought to our emergency department (ED) because he had lost consciousness for an unknown amount of time after snorting heroin. He had severe pain in his upper right arm. Physical examination revealed right arm edema, paresthesia, tenderness, and firmness to palpation. During the ED assessment, the patient began to experience pain in his right hip to a degree exceeding examinat

Nerve Transfer Surgery for Penetrating Upper Extremity Injuries.

CONTEXT: Nerve transfer surgery is an option for repair of penetrating injuries of the upper extremity. In the right setting, it has advantages over tendon transfers and nerve grafting. OBJECTIVE: To review our experience since 2006 of nerve transfer surgery in the upper extremities. DESIGN: We included cases performed to repair penetrating trauma within three months of injury with at least three years' follow-up. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Preoperative and postoperative muscle strength of the affected extremity. RESULTS: All 16 patients were males aged 16 to 43 years. Six patients underwent n

Osteology and Radiological Anatomy of the Thoracic Limbs of Temminck's Ground Pangolin (Smutsia temminckii).

Temminck's ground pangolin is the only pangolin present in South Africa. It is a myrmecophagous mammal with a bipedal gait. The thoracic limbs are used to break open ant nests, dig for food, and expand previously occupied burrows. This study describes the osteology and radiological anatomy of the thoracic limbs of this threatened species. Thoracic limbs from four Temminck's ground pangolins, which succumbed from electrocution or natural causes, were digitally radiographed in situ. The individual bones were then cleaned, described and digitally radiographed. The skeleton of the thoracic limbs r

Deltoid muscle activity in patients with reverse shoulder prosthesis at 2-year follow-up.

PURPOSE: The reverse shoulder prosthesis (RSP) was developed to relieve pain and improve functional outcomes in patients with glenohumeral arthritis and deficiency of the rotator cuff. Even if clinical and functional outcomes regarding the use of the RSP were reported by literature, data concerning progressive deltoid adaptation to this non-anatomic implant are still missing. The purpose of our study was to correlate clinical and functional outcomes with deltoid fibers activity and muscle fatigability in patients with reverse shoulder prosthesis at 2 years follow-up. METHODS: Twenty patients

Outcomes Following Radial Head Arthroplasty.

Most current series of radial head arthroplasty include small numbers of patients with short- to medium-term follow-up and significant heterogeneity in patients, treatments, and outcome measures. The purpose of this systematic review was to review outcomes for radial head arthroplasty based on injury chronicity, injury pattern, and type of implant used. The authors systematically searched electronic databases for studies containing radial head arthroplasty or radial head replacement and identified 19 studies for inclusion in the analysis. For each included study, a composite mean was obtained

Rural Kentucky High School Students' Exposure to All-Terrain Vehicle Riding and Injuries.

From 1982 to 2007, Kentucky had 459 deaths related to all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), fifth highest among US states. By 2012, Kentucky ranked fourth highest, with 578 ATV-related deaths. Following the sentinel event of an ATV-related traumatic brain injury to an unhelmeted high school student, the authors developed a 19-item survey that collected data regarding rural Kentucky high school students' years of ATV driving, second-rider frequency, typical duration of riding events, estimated weekly number of riding events, and frequency of helmet use. Of the 159 students involved, males scored signifi

Composite neuromusculo-fasciocutaneous triceps brachii free flap for complex foot reconstructive surgery.

Since it was first described by Song in 1982, then by Katsaros in 1984, the lateral arm flap has become a workhorse technique for upper limb reconstruction. Herein we describe a clinical case of complex foot defect and bring up the possibility of using a composite neuromusculo-fasciocutaneous lateral arm/triceps free flap for its reconstruction. A 19-year-old male nonsmoker suffered ballistic trauma to his right foot with open multifragment Gustilo-IIIb fractures of the first to fifth metatarsal bones. Two weeks after debridement and V.A.C.™ therapy performed in another hospital, we decided to

Acute injuries and overuse syndromes in sport climbing and bouldering in Austria: a descriptive epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: The increasing popularity of climbing activities is associated with a rise in the number of respective injuries and overuse syndromes. However, a comprehensive scrutiny of the incidence, kind and severity of climbing-related ailments in Austria is so far outstanding. We aimed to evaluate injuries and overuse syndromes in sport climbing and bouldering in Austria and to investigate whether the injury incidence differs between specific groups of climbers. DESIGN: Retrospective cross-sectional self-report study. METHODS: A self-report questionnaire to assess (a) demographic and anthr

Radiological review of accident and emergency radiographs: a 1-year audit.

AIM: To assess the impact and cost effectiveness of a system of radiological review of accident and emergency (A&E) plain films. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Review documentation was studied retrospectively over a 1-year period. Six hundred and eighty-four actual or suspected errors in the initial radiological interpretation by A&E staff were highlighted by radiologists in training. These selected 'red reports' were then further reviewed by a musculoskeletal radiologist and a more senior member of the A&E team. RESULTS: Three hundred and fifty-one missed or strongly suspected fractures were detect

Preventing in-line skating injuries: how effective are the countermeasures?

There was a six-fold growth in participation in in-line skating in the US from 1989 to 1996 and a concomitant increase in injuries. Similar trends have been reported in Canada, the UK, Denmark and Australia. Falls, mostly from loss of balance, are a common cause of injury. Falling skaters typically put one or both hands out to break their fall and land on a hard surface with the upper limb sustaining the injury. Approximately one-quarter of all in-line skating injuries are wrist fractures. Hospital emergency department data shows that skaters aged 10 to 14 years are most at risk for injury. Fi

Superior functional outcome following reverse shoulder arthroplasty compared to hemiarthroplasty for displaced three- and four-part fractures in patients 65 and older: results from a prospective multicenter randomized controlled trial - The shoulder hemiarthroplasty or reverse polarity arthoplasty (SHeRPA) trial.

BACKGROUND: Acute unreconstructible 3- or 4-part proximal humerus fractures can be treated with hemiarthroplasty or reverse polarity shoulder arthroplasty. Randomized trials using implants from multiple different companies or uncemented implants have found superior results with reverse polarity arthroplasty. HYPOTHESIS: We tested the hypothesis that cemented reverse polarity arthroplasty produces a superior outcome compared to cemented hemiarthroplasty using one implant system in patients aged 65 years and over at 12 months follow-up as measured with the Constant Score. METHODS: A prospectiv
