INTRODUCTION: Morbid obesity needs to be treated by bariatric procedures. Proper dietary preparation of patients before surgery conditions their postoperative status.
AIM: Assessment of dietary habits, nutritional status and biochemical parameters of the blood in patients being prepared for different bariatric procedures.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study involved a group of 27 obese adults: 19 women (mean age: 40.4 ±13.9 years) and 8 men (mean age: 39.6 ±12.7 years) qualified for bariatric procedures. Body composition, dietary habits and selected biochemical parameters of blood were assessed.

Little is known about clinical and pharmacological factors affecting icMg in normomagnesemic patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Juvenile rickets or osteopenia in rural black children is thought to be due to low calcium intake. Characteristic findings include mild calcium deficiency, normal serum phosphate levels, increased alkaline phosphatase concentrations and normal plasma vitamin D levels. Of 21 patients with morbid obesity 10 were randomly allocated to ES (end-to-side) and 11 to EE (end-to-end) jejunoileal bypass. Ten patients in each group were followed up for more than 3 years. Male rats were divided into five diet-dependent groups: the Control group; two kinds of Zn-deficient diet groups with different amounts of Mn and Mg (the CLEA and OBS group); the Pair-fed group, where the body weight gain of the rats was restricted; and the OBS + Zn group. In those groups where the diets were deficient in Zn, Mn, and Mg, bone-marrow cells were suppressed and the peripheral reticulocyte count was decreased, but plasma corticosterone increased significantly. The OBS + Zn group demonstrated an improvement in the reticulocyte count and serum corticosterone level.

We determined the effects of prenatal exposure to DNA synthesis inhibitor methotrexate (MTX) on: (a) the susceptibility to low Mg(2+)-induced epileptiform activity in deep layers (IV-V) of medial entorhinal cortex in vitro; and (b) neuronal counts in this area.
