Application of a degree-day model of West Nile virus transmission risk to the East Coast of the United States of America.

A geographical information systems model that identifies regions of the United States of America (USA) susceptible to West Nile virus (WNV) transmission risk is presented. This system has previously been calibrated and tested in the western USA; in this paper we use datasets of WNV-killed birds from South Carolina and Connecticut to test the model in the eastern USA. Because their response to WNV infection is highly predictable, American crows were chosen as the primary source for model calibration and testing. Where crow data are absent, other birds are shown to be an effective substitute. Mo

Test of recrudescence hypothesis for overwintering of West Nile virus in gray catbirds.

West Nile virus is a pathogen of concern for both human and wildlife health. Although many aspects of the ecology of West Nile virus are well understood, the mechanisms by which this and similar mosquito-borne viruses overwinter and become reinitiated each spring in temperate regions is not known. A thorough understanding of this mechanism is crucial to risk assessment and development of control strategies. One of the hypotheses to explain the mechanism by which this virus persists from year to year is the spring recrudescence of latent virus in avian reservoir hosts. Stress-related immunosupp

Taxonomic status of the intracellular bacterium Wolbachia pipientis.

Wolbachia pipientis is a maternally inherited, intracellular bacterium found in more than 20 % of all insects, as well as numerous other arthropods and filarial nematodes. It has been the subject of a growing number of studies in recent decades, because of the remarkable effects it has on its arthropod hosts, its potential as a tool for biological control of arthropods of agricultural and medical importance and its use as a target for treatment of filariasis. W. pipientis was originally discovered in cells of the mosquito Culex pipiens and is the only formally described member of the genus. Mo

West Nile: worldwide current situation in animals and humans.

West Nile (WN) virus is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that is native to Africa, Europe, and Western Asia. It mainly circulates among birds, but can infect many species of mammals, as well as amphibians and reptiles. Epidemics can occur in rural as well as urban areas. Transmission of WN virus, sometimes involving significant mortality in humans and horses, has been documented at erratic intervals in many countries, but never in the New World until it appeared in New York City in 1999. During the next four summers it spread with incredible speed to large portions of 46 US states, and to Canada, M

Comparative population dynamics of mosquito-borne flaviviruses.

Among the members of the genus Flavivirus are several important human pathogens, including the dengue (DEN) and Japanese encephalitis (JE) viruses. From the analysis of gene sequence data of samples of these virus populations it is possible to infer phylogenetic relationships, which in turn can yield important epidemiological information, including their demographic history in humans. In this study, we use a recently developed method, based on coalescent theory, to infer the population dynamics of a variety of mosquito-borne flaviviruses. Our study involves the testing of alternative hypothese

Predicting St. Louis encephalitis virus epidemics: lessons from recent, and not so recent, outbreaks.

St. Louis encephalitis virus was first identified as the cause of human disease in North America after a large urban epidemic in St. Louis, Missouri, during the summer of 1933. Since then, numerous outbreaks of St. Louis encephalitis have occurred throughout the continent. In south Florida, a 1990 epidemic lasted from August 1990 through January 1991 and resulted in 226 clinical cases and 11 deaths in 28 counties. This epidemic severely disrupted normal activities throughout the southern half of the state for 5 months and adversely impacted tourism in the affected region. The accurate forecast

On the transmissibility of Eperythrozoon suis by Stomoxys calcitrans and Aedes aegypti.

The stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans (Linnaeus), and the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus), were utilized to determine their capability to transmit Eperythrozoon suis Splitter between swine. Three groups of each insect in each trial were allowed to feed on a pig previously infected with E. suis and then transferred to susceptible splenectomized pigs. As a control, one group of each insect was fed on a non-infected pig and then transferred to a susceptible pig. Stable flies were transferred immediately and following a delay of 1, 4, 24 h and 7 days. Aedes aegypti were transferred i

[Concepts about AIDS among the adult population of Managua].

Nicaragua has the lowest prevalence of AIDS in Central America. In other countries where AIDS is more prevalent, the first epidemic of asymptomatic infections with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the second of clinical cases of AIDS have been followed by a third epidemic of fear and discrimination. In December 1989 a study was conducted to investigate knowledge and attitudes about AIDS in a sample of 287 adults in Managua. Most of the interviewees had heard of the disease from newspapers and television, and more than 90% understood how HIV was principally transmitted. However, between o

Dibutyryl cAMP activates bumetanide-sensitive electrolyte transport in Malpighian tubules.

The effects of dibutyryl adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (DBcAMP) and bumetanide (both 10(-4) M) on transepithelial Na+, K+, Cl-, and fluid secretion and on tubule electrophysiology were studied in isolated Malpighian tubules of the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti. Peritubular DBcAMP significantly increased Na+, Cl-, and fluid secretion but decreased K+ secretion. In DBcAMP-stimulated tubules, bumetanide caused Na+, Cl-, and fluid secretion to return to pre-cAMP control rates and K+ secretion to decrease further. Peritubular bumetanide significantly increased Na+ secretion and decreas

Long-lasting insecticidal net ownership and malaria infection by socio-economic status: a cross-sectional household study in an area along Lake Victoria, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: This study focused on the importance of long-lasting insecticide treated nets (LLINs) in malaria control in a study area where socio-economic disparities are widening. The objective was to assess the effectiveness of LLIN ownership when nets were available for no more than two people, controlling for differences in socio-economic status (SES). It was hypothesized that LLIN effectiveness would differ by SES and that LLIN effectiveness should be analysed with adjustment for differences in SES. METHODS: A household level survey was conducted in an area in the Lake Victoria region in

Malaria outbreak facilitated by increased vector-breeding sites from erosion control pits sustained by intermittent rainfall, Mbale District, Uganda, January-June 2019.

BACKGROUND: In June 2019, the Uganda Ministry of Health, through routine surveillance data analysis, was notified of an increase in malaria cases in Mbale District, which exceeded the outbreak action thresholds. This investigation was conducted to assess the magnitude of the outbreak, identify transmission risk factors, and recommend evidence-based control measures. METHODS: A confirmed case was defined as a positive malaria result using a malaria rapid diagnostic test or microscopy from 1 January 2019 to 30 June 2019 in a resident or visitor of Bumbobi or Nyondo Sub-County, Mbale District. Association between recent overnight travel and use of long-lasting insecticidal nets in rural Uganda: a prospective cohort study in Tororo.

BACKGROUND: The burden of malaria in Uganda remains high, but has become increasingly heterogenous following intensified malaria control. Travel within Uganda is recognized as a risk factor for malaria, but behaviours associated with travel are not well-understood. To address this knowledge gap, malaria-relevant behaviours of cohort participants were assessed during travel and at home in Uganda. METHODS: Residents from 80 randomly selected households in Nagongera sub-county, Tororo district were enrolled into a cohort to study malaria in rural Uganda. All participants were given long-lasting

Human antibody response to Anopheles gambiae saliva: an immuno-epidemiological biomarker to evaluate the efficacy of insecticide-treated nets in malaria vector control.

For the fight against malaria, the World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized the need for indicators to evaluate the efficacy of vector-control strategies. This study investigates a potential immunological marker, based on human antibody responses to Anopheles saliva, as a new indicator to evaluate the efficacy of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs). Parasitological, entomological, and immunological assessments were carried out in children and adults from a malaria-endemic region of Angola before and after the introduction of ITNs. Immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels to An. gambiae saliva were posi

Delinquent mortgages, neglected swimming pools, and West Nile virus, California.

Adjustable rate mortgages and the downturn in the California housing market caused a 300% increase in notices of delinquency in Bakersfield, Kern County. This led to large numbers of neglected swimming pools, which were associated with a 276% increase in the number of human West Nile virus cases during the summer of 2007.

Horse-, bird-, and human-seeking behavior and seasonal abundance of mosquitoes in a West Nile virus focus of southern France.

After 35 yr of disease absence, West Nile virus (family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus, WNV) circulation has been regularly detected in the Camargue region (southern France) since 2000. WNV was isolated from Culex modestus Ficalbi, which was considered the main vector in southern France after horse outbreaks in the 1960s. Recent WNV transmissions outside of the Cx. modestus distribution suggested the existence of other vectors. To study potential WNV vectors, horse- and bird-baited traps and human landing collections of mosquitoes were carried out weekly from May to October 2004 at two Camargu

Increasing coverage of insecticide-treated nets in rural Nigeria: implications of consumer knowledge, preferences and expenditures for malaria prevention.

BACKGROUND: The coverage of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) remains low despite existing distribution strategies, hence, it was important to assess consumers' preferences for distribution of ITNs, as well as their perceptions and expenditures for malaria prevention and to examine the implications for scaling-up ITNs in rural Nigeria. METHODS: Nine focus group discussions (FGDs) and questionnaires to 798 respondents from three malaria hyper-endemic villages from Enugu state, south-east Nigeria were the study tools. RESULTS: There was a broad spectrum of malaria preventive tools being used by

An alternative focus in strategic research on disease vectors: the potential of genetically modified non-biting mosquitoes.

We examine the constraints and the feasibility of field experiments involving the release of genetically modified (GM) pathogen-resistant mosquitoes, and whether there are alternatives to the research line based on the production of refractory strains. The production of a GM mosquito strain characterized instead by obligate primiparous and parous autogeny and by disrupted host seeking and biting behaviour could make the release more acceptable by the general public. Genetic transformation should act in this case to reverse some of the essential steps of the evolutionary process that gave rise

Malaria control in central Malaita, Solomon Islands. 1. The use of insecticide-impregnated bed nets.

The present study investigated the use of insecticide-impregnated bed nets by communities in central Malaita, Solomon Islands. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected by: (1) questionnaire administration to 124 care-givers of children aged 0-10 years of age; (2) 20 focus group discussions; (3) two structured observations of bed net re-impregnation, and (4) interviews with key informants. Ninety-four percent of all care-givers had bed nets, but only 62% had sufficient bed nets for all household members. Fifty-two percent used bed nets throughout the year and 70% of care-givers reported

Hierarchical Virtual Screening of Potential Insectides Inhibitors of Acetylcholinesterase and Juvenile Hormone from Temephos.

Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762; Diptera: Culicidae) is the main vector transmitting viral diseases such as dengue fever, dengue haemorrhagic fever, urban yellow fever, zika and chikungunya. Worldwide, especially in the Americas and Brazil, many cases of dengue have been reported in recent years, which have shown significant growth. The main control strategy is the elimination of the vector, carried out through various education programs, to change human habits, but the most usual is biological control, together with environmental management and chemical control. The most commonly insecticide us
