Multimodal model with text and drug embeddings for adverse drug reaction classification.

In this paper, we focus on the classification of tweets as sources of potential signals for adverse drug effects (ADEs) or drug reactions (ADRs). Following the intuition that text and drug structure representations are complementary, we introduce a multimodal model with two components. These components are state-of-the-art BERT-based models for language understanding and molecular property prediction. Experiments were carried out on multilingual benchmarks of the Social Media Mining for Health Research and Applications (#SMM4H) initiative. Our models obtained state-of-the-art results of 0.61 F

Efficient adsorption of hexavalent chromium ions onto novel ferrochrome slag/polyaniline nanocomposite: ANN modeling, isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamic studies.

The current research is concerned with the adsorption behavior of chromium (IV) ions in an aqueous solution using a novel ferrochrome slag/polyaniline nanocomposite (FeCr-PANI) adsorbent. The effect of process parameters such as temperature, pH solution, initial Cr (VI) ions concentration, adsorbent dosage, and contact time on the adsorption process is experimentally investigated in this study. Furthermore, we have trained a multilayer artificial neural network (ANN) using the experimental data of various process parameters to successfully predict the adsorption behavior of chromium (IV) ions

Neural networks for estimation of facial palsy after vestibular schwannoma surgery.

PURPOSE: Facial nerve damage in vestibular schwannoma surgery is associated with A-train patterns in free-running EMG, correlating with the degree of postoperative facial palsy. However, anatomy, preoperative functional status, tumor size and occurrence of A-trains clusters, i.e., sudden A-trains in most channels may further contribute. In the presented study, we examine neural networks to estimate postoperative facial function based on such features. METHODS: Data from 200 consecutive patients were used to train neural feed-forward networks (NN). Estimated and clinical postoperative House an

Unraveling Representations in Scene-selective Brain Regions Using Scene-Parsing Deep Neural Networks.

Visual scene perception is mediated by a set of cortical regions that respond preferentially to images of scenes, including the occipital place area (OPA) and parahippocampal place area (PPA). However, the differential contribution of OPA and PPA to scene perception remains an open research question. In this study, we take a deep neural network (DNN)-based computational approach to investigate the differences in OPA and PPA function. In a first step, we search for a computational model that predicts fMRI responses to scenes in OPA and PPA well. We find that DNNs trained to predict scene compon

Interaction of Indirect and Hyperdirect Pathways on Synchrony and Tremor-Related Oscillation in the Basal Ganglia.

Low-frequency oscillatory activity (3-9 Hz) and increased synchrony in the basal ganglia (BG) are recognized to be crucial for Parkinsonian tremor. However, the dynamical mechanism underlying the tremor-related oscillations still remains unknown. In this paper, the roles of the indirect and hyperdirect pathways on synchronization and tremor-related oscillations are considered based on a modified Hodgkin-Huxley model. Firstly, the effects of indirect and hyperdirect pathways are analysed individually, which show that increased striatal activity to the globus pallidus external (GPe) or strong co

A graph auto-encoder model for miRNA-disease associations prediction.

Emerging evidence indicates that the abnormal expression of miRNAs involves in the evolution and progression of various human complex diseases. Identifying disease-related miRNAs as new biomarkers can promote the development of disease pathology and clinical medicine. However, designing biological experiments to validate disease-related miRNAs is usually time-consuming and expensive. Therefore, it is urgent to design effective computational methods for predicting potential miRNA-disease associations. Inspired by the great progress of graph neural networks in link prediction, we propose a novel

End-to-end semantic segmentation of personalized deep brain structures for non-invasive brain stimulation.

Electro-stimulation or modulation of deep brain regions is commonly used in clinical procedures for the treatment of several nervous system disorders. In particular, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is widely used as an affordable clinical application that is applied through electrodes attached to the scalp. However, it is difficult to determine the amount and distribution of the electric field (EF) in the different brain regions due to anatomical complexity and high inter-subject variability. Personalized tDCS is an emerging clinical procedure that is used to tolerate electrode

TzanckNet: a convolutional neural network to identify cells in the cytology of erosive-vesiculobullous diseases.

Tzanck smear test is a low-cost, rapid and reliable tool which can be used for the diagnosis of many erosive-vesiculobullous, tumoral and granulomatous diseases. Currently its use is limited mainly due to lack of experience in interpretation of the smears. We developed a deep learning model, TzanckNet, that can identify cells in Tzanck smear test findings. TzanckNet was trained on a retrospective development dataset of 2260 Tzanck smear images collected between December 2006 and December 2019. The finalized model was evaluated using a prospective validation dataset of 359 Tzanck smear images c

Comparing Logistic Regression Models with Alternative Machine Learning Methods to Predict the Risk of Drug Intoxication Mortality.

(1) Medical research has shown an increasing interest in machine learning, permitting massive multivariate data analysis. Thus, we developed drug intoxication mortality prediction models, and compared machine learning models and traditional logistic regression. (2) Categorized as drug intoxication, 8,937 samples were extracted from the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2008-2017). We trained, validated, and tested each model through data and compared their performance using three measures: Brier score, calibration slope, and calibration-in-the-large. (3) A chi-square test demon

System Design for Emergency Alert Triggered by Falls Using Convolutional Neural Networks.

The world population ageing is on the rise, which has led to an increase in the demand for medical care due to diseases and symptoms prevalent in health centers. One of the most prevalent symptoms prevalent in older adults is falls, which affect one-third of patients each year and often result in serious injuries that can lead to death. This paper describes the design of a fall detection system for elderly households living alone using very low resolution thermal sensor arrays. The algorithms implemented were LSTM, GRU, and Bi-LSTM; the last one mentioned being that which obtained the best res

Nocturnal Hypoglycemia Detection using Optimal Bayesian Algorithm in an EEG Spectral Moments Based System.

This paper presents a hypoglycemia detection system using electroencephalogram (EEG) spectral moments from 8 patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) at night time. Four channels (C3, C4, O1, and O2) associated with glycemic episodes were analyzed. Spectral moments were applied to EEG signal and its corresponding speed and acceleration. During hypoglycemia, theta moments increased significantly (P<; 0.001) and alpha moments decreased significantly (P<; 0.001). The system used an optimal Bayesian neural network for detecting hypoglycemic episodes. Based on the optimal network architecture with the h
