Criterion validity of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Epworth Sleepiness Scale for the diagnosis of sleep disorders.

OBJECTIVES: (1) To examine criterion validity of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) using obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD), rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD), and narcolepsy as criterion standard. (2) To summarize the evidence for criterion validity of the ESS for the diagnosis of OSA by a meta-analysis that combines the current and previous studies. (3) To investigate the determinants of the PSQI and ESS scores. METHODS: The PSQI and ESS as well as the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), w

Masticatory muscle sleep background electromyographic activity is elevated in myofascial temporomandibular disorder patients.

Despite theoretical speculation and strong clinical belief, recent research using laboratory polysomnographic (PSG) recording has provided new evidence that frequency of sleep bruxism (SB) masseter muscle events, including grinding or clenching of the teeth during sleep, is not increased for women with chronic myofascial temporomandibular disorder (TMD). The current case-control study compares a large sample of women suffering from chronic myofascial TMD (n = 124) with a demographically matched control group without TMD (n = 46) on sleep background electromyography (EMG) during a laboratory PS

Growth hormone-releasing hormone activates sleep regulatory neurons of the rat preoptic hypothalamus.

We examined whether growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) may promote non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep via activation of GABAergic neurons in the preoptic area. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were implanted with EEG, EMG electrodes and a unilateral intracerebroventricular cannula. Groups of rats received injections (3 microl icv) with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GHRH) (0.1 nmol/100 g body wt) or equal volume of physiological saline at the onset of the dark period and were permitted spontaneous sleep for 90 min. Separate groups of rats were sleep deprived by gentle handling for 90 min, begin

Effects of paradoxical sleep deprivation on genital reflexes in five rat strains.

This study examined the effects of cocaine on genital reflexes in paradoxical sleep-deprived (PSD) male rats of five strains since it has been demonstrated that this drug enhances genital reflexes in Wistar PSD rats. At the end of a 4-day period of PSD or at the equivalent time-point to control animals, cocaine or saline was acutely administered to the animals and penile erection (PE) and ejaculation (EJ) were quantified. Results indicated that PSD induced genital reflexes in all strains, and cocaine potentiated these behaviors in Wistar and Long-Evans rats. Wistar PSD rats injected with cocai

Electroencephalographic sleep profiles during depression. Effects of episode duration and other clinical and psychosocial factors in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Limited evidence suggests that polysomnographic alterations may be more prominent early in a depressive episode. Whether the effects of episode duration extend beyond middle age and appear in late-life depression as well has important implications for treatment decisions and for understanding depressive illness across the life span. Furthermore, the impact of episode duration on sleep has not been examined in the context of other factors related to clinical history and psychosocial status. METHODS: Eighty-three persons aged 60 years or older with recurrent depression were studied:

Wearable Movement-Tracking for Prodromal Parkinson's Disease Detection: A Cross-Country Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Models trained on accelerometer data have been proposed for detecting prodromal Parkinson's disease (PD). However, uncertainties in diagnosis timing in the UK Biobank (UKBB) may affect generalizability to other cohorts. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate the performance of previously published models for prodromal PD detection in other international cohorts. METHODS: We applied the models to data from German and British cohorts of individuals with isolated or idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder and healthy controls. We compared hourly acceleration

Alterations of fecal microbiota and plasma metabolome in patients with Parkinson's disease with rapid eye movement sleep disorder.

UNLABELLED: Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) with probable rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) (PD-RBD), a specific subtype of PD, are characterized by the presence of more severe motor and non-motor symptoms. This study aimed to elucidate the characteristics and interactions of gut microbiota and plasma metabolic characteristics of PD-RBD, thus screening for the disease mechanisms. A total of 100 PD patients, 50 healthy controls (HCs) and 16 probable idiopathic RBD (iRBD) patients were collected. There were 33 PD-RBD and 67 patients without probable RBD (PD-nRBD) in PD pati

Smartphone Voice Calls Provide Early Biomarkers of Parkinsonism in Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Speech dysfunction represents one of the initial motor manifestations to develop in Parkinson's disease (PD) and is measurable through smartphone. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to develop a fully automated and noise-resistant smartphone-based system that can unobtrusively screen for prodromal parkinsonian speech disorder in subjects with isolated rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) in a real-world scenario. METHODS: This cross-sectional study assessed regular, everyday voice call data from individuals with iRBD compared to early PD patients and healthy controls via a devel

Urodynamic study and its correlation with cardiac meta-iodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) in body-first and brain-first subtypes of Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are frequently observed in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), but the underlying mechanism remains elusive. The concept of "body-first" and "brain-first" subtypes in PD has been proposed, but the correlation of PD subtype with LUTS remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the disparities in urological dysfunctions between body-first and brain-first subtypes of PD using urodynamic studies (UDS). METHODS: We reviewed patients with PD (disease duration <3 years) who had undergone UDS and completed urological questionnaires (Overact

Longitudinal brain changes in Parkinson's disease with severe olfactory deficit.

INTRODUCTION: Olfactory dysfunction and REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) are associated with distinct cognitive trajectories in the course of Parkinson's disease (PD). The underlying neurobiology for this relationship remains unclear but may involve distinct patterns of neurodegeneration. This study aimed to examine longitudinal cortical atrophy and thinning in early-stage PD with severe olfactory deficit (anosmia) without and with concurrent probable RBD. METHODS: Longitudinal MRI data over four years of 134 de novo PD and 49 healthy controls (HC) from the Parkinson Progression Marker Initi

Automated analysis of connected speech reveals early biomarkers of Parkinson's disease in patients with rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder.

For generations, the evaluation of speech abnormalities in neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease (PD) has been limited to perceptual tests or user-controlled laboratory analysis based upon rather small samples of human vocalizations. Our study introduces a fully automated method that yields significant features related to respiratory deficits, dysphonia, imprecise articulation and dysrhythmia from acoustic microphone data of natural connected speech for predicting early and distinctive patterns of neurodegeneration. We compared speech recordings of 50 subjects with rapid eye

Depression and eating disorders.

Both depressive disorders and eating disorders are multidimensional and heterogeneous disorders. This paper examines the nature of their relationship by reviewing clinical descriptive, family-genetic, treatment, and biological studies that relate to the issue. The studies confirm the prominence of depressive symptoms and depressive disorders in eating disorders. Other psychiatric syndromes which occur with less frequency, such as anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorders in anorexia nervosa, or personality disorders, anxiety disorders, and substance abuse in bulimia nervosa, also pl

Estimation of dynamic chemoresponsiveness in wakefulness and non-rapid-eye-movement sleep.

We developed a method for quantifying dynamic chemoresponsiveness on the basis of the ventilatory response to pseudorandom binary CO2 stimulation. The dynamic chemoreflex gain (GD) and effective time delay (TDeff) relating breath-to-breath fluctuations in alveolar PCO2 to ventilation were evaluated at frequencies between 0 and 0.05 Hz. Application of the method to simulated "data" showed that estimation errors in GD and TDeff were most likely to be minimized in the range of 0.01-0.03 Hz, corresponding to periodicities of 30-100 s. Estimation of TDeff was generally more susceptible to error tha

Effects of continuous infusions (10 days) and cessation of infusions of clonidine and rilmenidine (S 3341) on cardiovascular and behavioral parameters of spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Clonidine is a centrally acting antihypertensive drug that acts in vivo at both alpha 1- and alpha 2-adrenoceptor sites, whereas rilmenidine (S 3341) is more selective for alpha 2 adrenoceptors. The present study compared the effects of continuous 10-day infusions of clonidine (5 micrograms/kg/hour) with those of rilmenidine (100 micrograms/kg/hour) on various cardiovascular and behavioral parameters in the spontaneously hypertensive rat. The changes in these parameters after cessation of the infusions were also compared. At these rates of infusion, clonidine and rilmenidine produced quantitat

Hypoxemia associated with feeding in the preterm infant and full-term neonate.

Polygraphic monitoring studies were performed on more than 150 older preterm infants (postconceptional ages of 36 weeks or more) and full-term neonates to evaluate unexplained or persistent apnea. During polygraphic monitoring, 16 infants were observed to have hypoxemia associated with feedings. The feeding hypoxemia was accompanied by irregular respiratory effort and preceded any associated bradycardia. A comparison group of eight infants with similar gestational and postconceptional ages, but without feeding hypoxemia, was selected retrospectively from other infants referred for evaluation o
