Genetic transformation patterns along a longitude gradient in Ukrainian populations of Schizophyllum commune fungus.

The research of fungal biodiversity is important under global climate change and increasing anthropogenic pressure on ecosystems. The most studies focusing on fungal biogeography oriented on species richness. There is a short supply researches on how genetic diversity shifts along a longitudinal gradient within one species. Model fungi with well-characterized genomes and simple cultivation requirements allow detailed research of evolutionary and ecological processes. The aim was to study the genetic profile transformation of the Schizophyllum commune populations by DNA microsatellite loci alon

Ecosystem-specific patterns in soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) biodegradability: Validated by a multi-property persistence index for linking DOM and soil organic matter intrinsic characteristics.

Soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) bio-stability is critical for understanding carbon (C) cycling and ecosystem functioning. Existing approaches for estimating DOM biodegradability are constrained by the need to balance accuracy, scalability, and cost-effectiveness, given DOM's chemical complexity and methodological limitations. Soil DOM is widely used as a proxy for soil organic matter (SOM) persistence, yet direct empirical validation remains scarce. Here, we applied an integrative index, the persistence index (PI), calculated using ecosystem multifunctionality frameworks based on multiple

Standardized terrestrial laser scanning dataset of forests: 3D point clouds and tree-level attributes from 121 plots across five European regions.

Forest structure strongly influences ecological processes, drives biodiversity patterns and habitat availability, and is directly linked to carbon storage. Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) enables highly detailed three-dimensional characterization of forest ecosystems at the plot scale, capturing both canopy structure and understory vegetation with high spatial precision. However, many publicly available TLS datasets are limited in spatial extent or employ various acquisition protocols, complicating cross-site comparisons. This article introduces a harmonized TLS dataset comprising 121 forest

Bridging single-species research and mixture reality: Emerging contaminants fate and transport in vadose zones.

Vadose zones serve as interfaces controlling contaminant transport from the land surface to underlying aquifers. While traditional research has largely focused on individual contaminant species, real-world contamination often involves complex mixtures containing dozens to thousands of chemical species. This disconnect creates considerable challenges for predicting contaminant behavior, assessing environmental risks, and developing effective remediation strategies. This review examines complex contaminant mixtures in vadose zones, with emphasis on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, pharmaceut

Mechanism-based clustering reveals distinct controls on phytoplankton community composition across Korean marginal seas from integrated in situ and satellite observations (KORUS-OC 2016).

Phytoplankton regulate the marine food web, biogeochemical processes, and climate-relevant carbon export to depth in the oceans, but the mechanisms controlling their distributions vary across space and time, limiting inference from pooled analyses. We developed a mechanism-based clustering framework that groups stations by covariate-community response fingerprints inferred from a multivariate generalized linear mixed model (GLMM). Station-specific random effects across major taxa were treated as fingerprints and clustered to define mechanism-consistent groups; Geostationary Ocean Color Imager

System immunoinformatics-based design of a multi-epitope vaccine candidate against La Crosse virus.

The emergence of La Crosse virus (LACV) infection has been attributed to the global expansion of mosquito habitats and climate change. This pressing issue underscores the urgency of preemptive actions to combat the infection. Currently, no vaccines or targeted antivirals are available for LACV infection. The present study utilizes advanced immunoinformatics approaches for the design of a multiepitope vaccine (LACV-mVax01) targeting the viral proteins G1, G2, and N. The structural assessment suggested favorable stability characteristics, reflected by an instability score of 17.12 and an aliphat

Structural adaptations of aboveground vegetative organs to cangas: A case study with the Amazonian species Carajasia cangae R.M.Salas, E.L.Cabral & Dessein (Rubiaceae), which grows on ferruginous outcrops.

The Brazilian ironstone outcrops (cangas) impose challenging conditions for establishing species. Adapted species should exhibit different responses to xeric conditions of cangas. To understand these adaptations, our plant model was Carajasia cangae R.M.Salas, E.L.Cabral & Dessein, an endemic and threatened species restricted to the cangas of the Amazon Forest. Herein, we investigate structural adaptations that are important for its conservation, including anatomical characteristics of stems and leaves. To this goal, we evaluated the plant anatomy, including developmental aspects, between plan

Composition and assembly processes of rhizosphere bacterial communities of arbuscular mycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal tree species.

How the mycorrhizal type of tree species regulates the composition and assembly processes of rhizosphere bacterial communities remains unclear. We selected five arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and five ectomycorrhizal (EcM) tree species from two typical forests across different climatic zones, namely a subtropical evergreen broadleaved forest at Tiantong Station in Zhejiang and a temperate broadleaved Korean pine forest at Maoershan Station in Heilongjiang. We analyzed the rhizosphere soil physicochemical properties and bacterial community composition, and quantified the assembly processes of bact

Thinking about tomorrow: A population-based natural language processing analysis of young adults' hopes and worries for the future.

BACKGROUND: The recent declines in youth mental health highlight the need for research into the factors underlying distress and those that foster well-being. Open-ended text responses offer the potential to reveal novel insights, but remain an underused resource. Advances in natural language processing (NLP) offer powerful tools for efficiently analyzing text in large samples. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to extract meaningful themes from young adults' open-text responses about their future hopes and worries, and to test associations of these themes with internalizing symptoms. METHOD: Data c

A genus-labeled dataset of individual trees outside forests in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

Detailed data on individual trees growing outside forests (TOF) are essential for arboriculture, biodiversity assessment, ecosystem services assessment, climate adaptation, and environmental health research. However, existing datasets are often incomplete and seldom provide taxonomic information beyond publicly managed trees in cities of Germany and other countries where maintaining a tree cadaster is a legal requirement. Here, we present for the first time a statewide dataset of individual TOF in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, including tree locations, crown geometry, height, and ge

Quaternary Climate Oscillations Shape Genetic Diversity and Spatial Structure of Viola hybanthoides (Violaceae) Endemic to Danxia Landscape.

Viola hybanthoides is a narrowly endemic species restricted to two isolated danxia landscapes (Pingshi and Mount Danxiashan) in Southeast China, serving as an ideal model for studying endemism in fragmented habitats. Using ddRAD-seq and shallow genome sequencing, we genotyped 156 individuals from 13 populations of the species to explore its genetic patterns and evolutionary processes. Results showed extremely low within-population genetic diversity (H E  = 0.058 ± 0.028), probably driven by limited pollen and seed dispersal ranges, recurrent founder events, and persistent genetic drift exacerb

Oxylipin-mediated metabolic signatures of symbiosis homeostasis and thermal stress in a model sea anemone.

Oxylipins are oxygenated products of fatty acids proposed to exert a regulatory role in cnidarian-dinoflagellate symbiosis; however, this has not been investigated in detail. We integrated physiological measurements and molecular phenotyping with comparative transcriptome mining to examine how the symbiotic cnidarian model, the sea anemone Aiptasia (i.e. Exaiptasia diaphana), and its dinoflagellate symbiont Breviolum minutum respond to symbiosis and thermal stress. We performed lipidomics in combination with the quantification of oxylipins, including octadecanoids, eicosanoids, and docosanoids

Comparative evaluation of different detoxification treatments on Lantana camara leaves: Isolation, quantification, characterization and in vitro cytotoxicity of Lantadene A.

Deficiency of feed and fodder year-round is the biggest challenge for livestock rearing in the context of climate change and global warming. Among the unconventional forage sources, Lantana camara has recently gained attention because of its widespread availability. The plant leaves contain a significant amount of protein and nutrients, which makes them a potential forage source. However, the occurrence of lantadenes is also responsible for hepatotoxicity in animals. Therefore, this study investigated the comparative evaluation of different detoxification treatments on L. camara leaves and the

Data processing pipeline for managing enteric methane emissions from sniffer: Application on dairy farming systems.

Accurate quantification of enteric methane (CH4) emissions from ruminants is essential to support global strategies aimed at mitigating GHG outputs from the livestock sector. Among the available in vivo techniques, the sniffer method offers a noninvasive and cost-effective solution for large-scale monitoring, but lacks standardized procedures for data processing and validation. This study presents a pipeline for processing sniffer-derived raw data to estimate individual CH4 and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from dairy animals. The procedure was tested on 3 commercial farms in central Italy, c

Ambitious Co-scaling of Carbon Dioxide Removal and Decarbonization Delivers Better Climate Outcomes Than Strategies That Prioritize Efforts in One Domain.

Concerns about mitigation deterrence have prompted calls for pathways that avoid multigigatonne reliance on carbon dioxide removal (CDR), yet such pathways can also discourage near-term investment in CDR, leaving the technologies technically and economically underprepared if large-scale deployment becomes necessary due to unfulfilled emission reduction pledges. Here we model a new pathway in which CDR and decarbonization "Co-Scale" aggressively in parallel without one undermining the other, with the intention that we can readily course-correct if effort in one domain does not materialize. We t

The lingering impacts of COVID-19 on older women in Kenya and Uganda: A quantitative analysis of health, wellbeing, and WASH insecurity.

BACKGROUND: The world appears to be experiencing more than its fair share of shocks: climatic disasters, pandemics, wars and political events that have far-reaching consequences for vulnerable populations globally. One such example was the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in both direct and indirect impacts on older women, especially those residing in Sub-Saharan Africa, due to the already fragile economic and health care systems in place, as well as the lack of infrastructure for public services. While substantial literature now exists documenting the impact of COVID-19 on vulnerable populat

Impact of extreme precipitation events on facility-based births in 21 sub-Saharan African countries.

Climate change impacts on health outcomes are increasingly recognized, yet the effects of Extreme Precipitation Events (EPEs) on geographical access to and timely use of health facilities for childbirth remain underexplored. We assess how EPEs influence facility-based births in 21 sub-Saharan African countries by combining Demographic and Health Survey data (2015-2021) with gridded daily precipitation data at 5 × 5 km resolution. Using a linear probability model with a three-day exposure window preceding each date of birth, we analyze 256,101 live births from 12,948 locations and define EPEs a
