We investigated the role of two genes, ANKH and TNAP, in patients with cuff tear arthropathy. These genes encode proteins which regulate the extracellular concentration of inorganic pyrophosphate, fluctuations of which can lead to calcium crystal formation. Variants were detected by direct sequencing of DNA and their frequencies compared with healthy controls. The effect of variants on protein function was further studied by in vitro approaches. Deficiencies of iron and iodine are common in West Africa, and salt is one of very few food vehicles available for fortification. BACKGROUND: Vgamma9(+)Vdelta2(+) gammadelta T cells (Vdelta 2(+) T cells) are activated by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and secrete interferon (IFN)-gamma. Vdelta 2(+) T cells recognize phosphoantigens, such as bromohydrin pyrophosphate (BrHPP), and link innate and adaptive immunity.

The influence of interferon alpha on nuclear phosphoinositidase C (PIC) in Daudi cells has been analysed. Results showed an early increase of PIC activity detectable within 90 min of interferon treatment concomitant with an increase of diacylglcerol (DAG) levels. We have cloned a segment of the human gene encoding UDP-galactose translocator by genetic complementation of its defective mutant in mouse FM3A cells. Membranes were prepared from the submandibular salivary glands of male young (3-months-old) and aged (24-months-old), Fisher 344 rats, and assayed for adenylate cyclase activity and for the ribosylation of G-proteins in the presence of [32P]-NAD+ and cholera toxin.
