Comparative evaluation of the use of artificial neural networks for modelling the epidemiology of schistosomiasis mansoni.

There has been a marked increase in the application of approaches based on artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of computer science and medical diagnosis, but AI is still relatively unused in epidemiological settings. In this study we report results of the application of neural networks (NN; a special category of AI) to schistosomiasis. It was possible to design an NN structure which can process and fit epidemiological data collected from 251 schoolchildren in Egypt using the first year's data to predict second and third years' infection rates. Data collected over 3 years included age, ge

Does baseline strength influence adaptations to velocity loss threshold-based resistance training?

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether baseline strength moderates the magnitude of adaptations to velocity loss (VL) threshold-based resistance training across different training populations. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus (EBSCO), and Embase up to January 2026. Randomized controlled trials were included if they implemented resistance training prescribed using predefined VL thresholds, lasted at least 3 weeks, reported quantifiable baseline strength data, and provided pre- and post-intervention measures of strength and/or power outcomes. BIOMARKERS OF BONE REMODELING AND INFLAMMATION IN CHRONIC PERIAPICAL LESIONS: A NARRATIVE REVIEW.

BACKGROUND: Chronic periapical lesions are inflammatory conditions that cause ongoing destruction of the alveolar bone. While microbial infection is known to be the initial cause, the complex interplay between the types of microbes present, immune responses, factors affecting the whole body, and bone remodeling processes is not yet fully understood. OBJECTIVES: This narrative review summarizes current evidence on how bone metabolism changes in chronic periapical lesions. It also examines the roles of inflammatory mediators, osteoimmune pathways, systemic factors, and imaging techniques in und

Beyond the Meat of the Matter: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Hepatitis E Seroprevalence and Food-Borne Transmission Potential in the Balkans.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an emerging zoonotic pathogen in Europe, mainly transmitted via consumption of naturally contaminated food or contact with infected animals. People living in the Balkans have diverse dietary habits, with high pork consumption in some countries, making this region a relevant setting for investigating HEV seroprevalence and its possible determinants. The current study aimed to estimate pooled HEV seroprevalence among adults in the general population and blood donors and to assess factors associated with regional variation. Twenty-eight eligible studies were identified

The Measurement and Application of Critical Speed and D' in Running: A Scoping Review.

Critical speed (CS) represents the maximal metabolic steady state in running, and D' represents the finite distance capacity above CS. However, there is currently no consensus on the optimal measurement and modelling methods to obtain CS and D' estimates, how CS and D' influence running performance, or how CS and D' have been applied within a training environment. The aims of this scoping review were to determine the specific protocols and modelling methods that have been implemented to quantify CS and D' in running; the deterministic potential of CS and D' for running race performance; and th

Emergency Critical Care as a Continuum: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Three-Tiered Framework for the Assessment and Management of Critically Ill Patients in the Emergency Department.

Emergency critical care (ECC) is increasingly recognized as an indispensable component of the critical care continuum, beginning at the point of first medical contact in the emergency department (ED). As critically ill patients spend longer periods in the ED and emergency physicians assume an expanding role in providing ongoing critical care, existing assessment frameworks may not fully address the evolving cognitive demands of ECC. This article describes a conceptual three-tier framework intended to provide a pragmatic strategy for the assessment and management of critically ill patients thro
