Role of prefrontal cortex in auditory-verbal hallucinations: Actor or passive bystander?

In this paper we discuss the role of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in schizophrenia and particularly in auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH). The paper starts with a review of the concept of hypofrontality in the 1970s and a view of PFC as a passive bystander unable to regulate or control internally generated sensory impulses. We further discuss the relationship between PFC and memory processes and the hypothesis that AVH experiences occur because of intrusions of negative emotional memories, and regulation of the emotional content of the voices. Similarly, AVH experiences can be the result of f

Childhood Maltreatment and Complex PTSD: A Systematic Literature Review.

There is established evidence that childhood maltreatment is associated with Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD), although the underlying mechanisms are not still precise. The current study aimed to systematically review empirical studies examining potential psychological factors linking childhood maltreatment to C-PTSD and the gaps in the literature. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses protocol, 19 original studies with a total of n = 1,075 subjects were analyzed. Five mediating processes were identified: (a) Emotional Processing as appr

Exploring role of prefrontal cortex region of brain in children having ADHD with machine learning: Implications and insights.

OBJECTIVE: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), is a general neurodevelopmental syndrome. This affects both adults and children, causing issues like hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsivity. Diagnosis, typically reliant on patient narratives and questionnaires, can sometimes be inaccurate, leading to distress. We propose utilizing empirical mode decomposition (EMD) for feature extraction and a machine learning (ML) algorithm to categorize ADHD and control. METHOD: Publicly available Kaggle dataset is used for research. The EMD technique decomposes an electroencephalogram (EEG)

Suicide in individuals with no psychiatric disorders: what makes you vulnerable?

Globally, hundreds of thousands of people die by suicide every year. Suicides are usually associated with psychiatric illness. However, considerable evidence suggests that a significant number of individuals who die by suicide do not have diagnosable psychiatric disorders. The goal of this article is to attract attention to an overlooked issue of suicide in persons with no psychiatric disorders and to discuss some aspects of this issue. Research on identification and prevention of suicidal behavior in people with no psychiatric disorders is very limited. The available data indicate that suicid

The relationship between parental obsessive-compulsive disorder and children's cognitive disengagement syndrome (Sluggish Cognitive Tempo).

Although the impact of parental obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) on children is well known, there is a still need to investigate additional psychopathological effects that parental OCD may have on children. To our knowledge, the relationship between Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome (CDS), previously referred to as Sluggish Cognitive Tempo CDS in children and parents' OCD has not been investigated to date. In this study, we examined the relationship between parental OCD and children's CDS, while adjusting for parental anxiety, depression, as well as symptoms of internalization, externalizati

Risk avoidance and social anxiety in adolescence: Examination of event-related potentials and theta-dynamics on the Balloon Risk Avoidance Task.

Adolescents are at relatively high-risk for developing anxiety, particularly social anxiety. A primary hallmark of social anxiety is the impulse to avoid situations that introduce risk. Here, we examined the neural and behavioral correlates of risk avoidance in adolescents (N=59) 11 to 19 years of age. The Balloon Risk Avoidance Task was used with concurrent electroencephalography to measure event-related potentials (frontal P2; late slow-wave; N2, feedback-related negativity, FRN; posterior P3) and oscillatory dynamics (midfrontal theta, 4-7 Hz) in response to unsuccessful and successful risk

Utility of Multiple Specifiers for Subtyping Oppositional Defiant Problems: Investigating Multiple Psychopathy Dimensions as Specifiers.

Past research has speculated that using grandiose-manipulative (GM) and daring-impulsive (DI) traits, rather than solely callous-unemotional (CU) traits, could better inform subtyping youths with behavioral problems. However, this approach remains largely untested. To further enhance our understanding of this matter, the current study utilized self-report (n = 2,381) and parent-report (n = 1,846) data to examine the utility of three psychopathic dimensions as specifiers for oppositional defiant problems (ODP). Findings showed that ODP was a significant predictor of negative outcomes, while the

Structural brain differences related to compulsive sexual behavior disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) has been included as an impulse control disorder in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). However, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying CSBD remain largely unknown, and given previous indications of addiction-like mechanisms at play, the aim of the present study was to investigate if CSBD is associated with structural brain differences in regions involved in reward processing. METHODS: We analyzed structural MRI data of 22 male CSBD patients (mean = 38.7 years, SD = 11.7) and 20 matched healthy controls (HC;

Community intervention programs for sex offenders: A systematic review.

Sexual violence is a phenomenon that negatively impacts the victims' physical and psychological health and well-being. Sex offenders tend not to take responsibility for their actions, have difficulties in emotion regulation and impulse control, paraphilias or other disorders, so they are a difficult group to treat. In addition, the available psychological treatment programs tend to have inconsistent and, sometimes, undesirable results. This systematic review aimed to analyse the recidivism rates of sex offenders treated in community settings. According to the PRISMA guidelines, a systematic se

Effectiveness of Psychological Treatments for Borderline Personality Disorder and Predictors of Treatment Outcomes: A Multivariate Multilevel Meta-Analysis of Data from All Design Types.

We examined the effectiveness of psychotherapies for adult Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) in a multilevel meta-analysis, including all trial types (PROSPERO ID: CRD42020111351). We tested several predictors, including trial- and outcome type (continuous or dichotomous), setting, BPD symptom domain and mean age. We included 87 studies (N = 5881) from searches between 2013 and 2019 in four databases. We controlled for differing treatment lengths and a logarithmic relationship between treatment duration and effectiveness. Sensitivity analyses were conducted by excluding outliers and by pri

Association between gambling disorder and emotion (dys)regulation: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the role of emotion (dys)regulation in gambling disorder (GD). PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed were systematically searched for articles published until November 3, 2020. Forty-nine studies were considered for the systematic review; of these, 38 comprising 5242 participants met the inclusion criteria for the meta-analysis. Associations were found between GD and specific emotion regulation (ER) deficits, namely (1) nonacceptance of negative emotional states, (2) d

Risk of Suicidal Behavior in Children and Adolescents Exposed to Maltreatment: The Mediating Role of Borderline Personality Traits and Recent Stressful Life Events.

Childhood maltreatment (CM) is associated with increased non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicidal behavior (SB), independently of demographic and mental health conditions. Self-Trauma Theory and Linehan's Biopsychosocial Model might explain the emergence of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) symptoms as mediators of the association between CM and the risk of SB. However, little is known regarding such relationships when the exposure is recent for young persons. Here, we study 187 youths aged 7-17, with or without mental disorders. We explore CM experiences (considering the severity and

Sex-Specific ADHD-like Behaviour, Altered Metabolic Functions, and Altered EEG Activity in Sialyltransferase ST3GAL5-Deficient Mice.

A deficiency in GM3-derived gangliosides, resulting from a lack of lactosylceramide-alpha-2,3-sialyltransferase (ST3GAL5), leads to severe neuropathology, including epilepsy and metabolic abnormalities. Disruption of ganglioside production by this enzyme may also have a role in the development of neuropsychiatric disorders. ST3Gal5 knock-out (St3gal5-/-) mice lack a-, b-, and c-series gangliosides, but exhibit no overt neuropathology, possibly owing to the production of compensatory 0-series glycosphingolipids. Here, we sought to investigate the possibility that St3gal5-/- mice might exhibit a

Co-occurrence of apathy and impulse control disorders in Parkinson disease.

OBJECTIVE: To empirically test whether apathy and impulse control disorders (ICDs) represent independent, opposite ends of a motivational spectrum. METHODS: In this single-center, cross-sectional study, we obtained retrospective demographics and clinical data for 887 patients with idiopathic Parkinson disease (PD) seen at a tertiary care center. Mood and motivation disturbances were classified using recommended cutoff scores from self-reported measures of apathy, ICD, anxiety, and depression. RESULTS: Prevalence rates included 29.0% of patients with PD with depression, 40.7% with anxiety, 41

Safety considerations when using non-ergot dopamine agonists to treat Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Nonergot dopamine agonists (NEDA) represent an excellent treatment option for Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, in both early and advanced stages of the disease. The post-marketing phase of NEDA has highlighted, though, the occurrence of important long-term adverse events. AREAS COVERED: This review reports recent updates on NEDA adverse events, analyzing neurobiological bases and risk factors of these complications. A literature search has been performed using Medline and reviewing the bibliographies of selected articles. EXPERT OPINION: NEDA represents a very important optio

Cognitive and Academic Outcomes Following Childhood Cortical Stroke.

The majority of pediatric neuropsychological stroke research has focused on perinatal stroke outcomes given its relative frequency. Meanwhile, childhood-onset stroke is under-represented in the literature, resulting in limited knowledge about its neurocognitive sequelae. This retrospective study examined cognitive outcomes in children and youth (n = 27) with childhood arterial ischemic stroke (stroke occurring between 29 days and 18 years of life) isolated to the cortical region. Intellectual, academic, language, visual-perception, visual-motor integration, fine motor coordination, and executi

Situating adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in the externalizing spectrum: Etiological, diagnostic, and treatment considerations.

Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has a population prevalence of 5%. However, its prevalence is much higher in mental health and substance use treatment settings. It is associated with significant physical and psychiatric morbidity, as well as social, occupational, and legal consequences. Adult ADHD is considered to be a part of the externalizing spectrum with which it shares both homotypic comorbidity and heterotypic continuity across the lifespan. This is attributable to a shared genetic basis, which interacts with environmental risk factors such as nutritional deficienci

Short- and long-range functional connectivity density alterations in adolescents with pure conduct disorder at resting-state.

Conduct disorder (CD) is a developmental disorder defined by a repetitive and persistent display of antisocial and aggressive behaviors that violates the rights of others or basic social rules. Recently, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) has been widely adopted to investigate the altered intrinsic neural activities and the disrupted endogenous brain connectivity of CD. In this study, functional connectivity density (FCD) mapping, a newly developed ultrafast voxel-wise method based on rsfMRI, was applied for the first time to examine the changes in the brain functiona

The intersection of obesity and the longitudinal course of problem gambling.

The purpose of this analysis was to assess the potential association between body mass index (BMI) and change in gambling symptom severity in a sample of non-treatment-seeking problem gamblers over a one year period. One-hundred sixty problem gamblers age 18-29 were recruited from the surrounding community and completed assessments of gambling behavior and related variables at baseline and one-year visits. Hierarchical multiple regression was used to examine the association between BMI and symptom change, while accounting for nicotine use, gender, age, and baseline gambling severity. The sampl

How to study sex differences in addiction using animal models.

The importance of studying sex as a biological variable in biomedical research is becoming increasingly apparent. There is a particular need in preclinical studies of addiction to include both sexes, as female animals are often excluded from studies, leaving large gaps in our knowledge of not only sex differences and potential prevention and treatment strategies but also with regard to the basic neurobiology of addiction. This review focuses on methodology that has been developed in preclinical studies to examine sex differences in the behavioral aspects and neurobiological mechanisms related
