A semiparametric statistical approach for forecasting SO₂ and NOx concentrations.

This study develops a new semiparametric statistical approach for urban air quality forecasting. Compared to conventional approaches, the semiparametric approach allows the model users to benefit from the positive aspects and alleviate the negative ones of parametric and nonparametric approaches. Two advantages of the approach lie in (1) the interpretation of the data set being easily decoded and used by the model and (2) its capability in dependence on prior assumption. To illustrate the performance of the proposed approach, three semiparametric regression models (i.e., linear-, quadratic-, a

A model to predict 3-month mortality risk of acute-on-chronic hepatitis B liver failure using artificial neural network.

Model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) scoring was initiated using traditional statistical technique by assuming a linear relationship between clinical features, but most phenomena in a clinical situation are not linearly related. The aim of this study was to predict 3-month mortality risk of acute-on-chronic hepatitis B liver failure (ACHBLF) on an individual patient level using an artificial neural network (ANN) system. The ANN model was built using data from 402 consecutive patients with ACHBLF. It was trained to predict 3-month mortality by the data of 280 patients and validated by the r

A very fast neural learning for classification using only new incoming datum.

This paper proposes a very fast 1-pass-throw-away learning algorithm based on a hyperellipsoidal function that can be translated and rotated to cover the data set during learning process. The translation and rotation of hyperellipsoidal function depends upon the distribution of the data set. In addition, we present versatile elliptic basis function (VEBF) neural network with one hidden layer. The hidden layer is adaptively divided into subhidden layers according to the number of classes of the training data set. Each subhidden layer can be scaled by incrementing a new node to learn new samples

Artificial neural networks and the study of the psychoactivity of cannabinoid compounds.

Cannabinoid compounds have widely been employed because of its medicinal and psychotropic properties. These compounds are isolated from Cannabis sativa (or marijuana) and are used in several medical treatments, such as glaucoma, nausea associated to chemotherapy, pain and many other situations. More recently, its use as appetite stimulant has been indicated in patients with cachexia or AIDS. In this work, the influence of several molecular descriptors on the psychoactivity of 50 cannabinoid compounds is analyzed aiming one obtain a model able to predict the psychoactivity of new cannabinoids.

Scale effects in species distribution models: implications for conservation planning under climate change.

Predictions of future species' ranges under climate change are needed for conservation planning, for which species distribution models (SDMs) are widely used. However, global climate model-based (GCM) output grids can bias the area identified as suitable when these are used as SDM predictor variables, because GCM outputs, typically at least 50x50 km, are biologically coarse. We tested the assumption that species ranges can be equally well portrayed in SDMs operating on base data of different grid sizes by comparing SDM performance statistics and area selected by four SDMs run at seven grid siz

Markerless gating for lung cancer radiotherapy based on machine learning techniques.

In lung cancer radiotherapy, radiation to a mobile target can be delivered by respiratory gating, for which we need to know whether the target is inside or outside a predefined gating window at any time point during the treatment. This can be achieved by tracking one or more fiducial markers implanted inside or near the target, either fluoroscopically or electromagnetically. However, the clinical implementation of marker tracking is limited for lung cancer radiotherapy mainly due to the risk of pneumothorax. Therefore, gating without implanted fiducial markers is a promising clinical direction

Prediction of dissolution profiles of acetaminophen beads using artificial neural networks.

Immediate release acetaminophen (APAP) beads with 40% drug loading were prepared using the extrusion-spheronization process. Eighteen batches of beads were prepared based on a full factorial design by varying process variables such as extruder type, extruder screw speed, spheronization speed, and spheronization time. An in vitro dissolution test was carried out using the USP 27 Apparatus II (paddle) method. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models were developed based on the aforementioned process variables and dissolution data. The trained ANN models were used to predict the dissolution profile

Active versus latent representations: a neural network model of perseveration, dissociation, and decalage.

Children of different ages often perseverate, repeating previous behaviors when they are no longer appropriate, despite appearing to know what they should be doing. Using neural network models, we explore an account of these phenomena based on a distinction between active memory (subserved by the prefrontal cortex) and latent memory (subserved by posterior cortex). The models demonstrate how (a) perseveration occurs when an active memory of currently relevant knowledge is insufficiently strong to overcome a latent bias established by previous experience, (b) apparent dissociations between chil

Artificial neural network-based method of screening heart murmurs in children.

BACKGROUND: Early recognition of heart disease is an important goal in pediatrics. Efforts in developing an inexpensive screening device that can assist in the differentiation between innocent and pathological heart murmurs have met with limited success. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are valuable tools used in complex pattern recognition and classification tasks. The aim of the present study was to train an ANN to distinguish between innocent and pathological murmurs effectively. METHODS AND RESULTS: Using an electronic stethoscope, heart sounds were recorded from 69 patients (37 patholog

Predicting responses of nonlinear neurons in monkey striate cortex to complex patterns.

The overwhelming majority of neurons in primate visual cortex are nonlinear. For those cells, the techniques of linear system analysis, used with some success to model retinal ganglion cells and striate simple cells, are of limited applicability. As a start toward understanding the properties of nonlinear visual neurons, we have recorded responses of striate complex cells to hundreds of images, including both simple stimuli (bars and sinusoids) as well as complex stimuli (random textures and 3-D shaded surfaces). The latter set tended to give the strongest response. We created a neural network

Identification and validation of potential common biomarkers for papillary thyroid carcinoma and Hashimoto's thyroiditis through bioinformatics analysis and machine learning.

There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) may contribute to an increased risk of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). However, the exact relationship between HT and PTC is still not fully understood. The objective of this study was to identify potential common biomarkers that may be associated with both PTC and HT. Three microarray datasets from the GEO database and RNA-seq dataset from TCGA database were collected to identify shared differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between HT and PTC. A total of 101 genes was identified as common DEGs, primarily enric

Delayed feedback control of bursting synchronization in a scale-free neuronal network.

Several neurological diseases (e.g. essential tremor and Parkinson's disease) are related to pathologically enhanced synchronization of bursting neurons. Suppression of these synchronized rhythms has potential implications in electrical deep-brain stimulation research. We consider a simplified model of a neuronal network where the local dynamics presents a bursting timescale, and the connection architecture displays the scale-free property (power-law distribution of connectivity). The networks exhibit collective oscillations in the form of synchronized bursting rhythms, without affecting the f

Deciphering dengue fever transmission on higher-order networks.

Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Modeling dengue transmission is crucial for control, given its risk to half the world's population. This paper develops a host-to-host transmission model within hypergraphs constructed from simplicial complexes. Necessary conditions for the emergence of Turing instability in dengue dynamical systems naturally coupled on hypergraphs are derived. Furthermore, a multiplex network framework is constructed on hypergraphs by incorporating the influence of information on dengue transmission, and expressi

Transformer-assisted convolutional feature extraction with deep representation learning models for lung and colon cancer diagnosis using histopathological images.

Cancer is one of the deadliest diseases that can be caused by some metabolic anomalies or a convergence of transmitted disorders. Lung and colon cancer (LCC) are posited as the most common causes of death and disability in the modern world. Identification of the tumour in an initial stage before it spreads further inside the body will lessen the chance of death. Histopathological images (HIs) are extensively applied by medical professionals for identification, and they are highly essential in predicting patients' chances of survival. Usually, detection cancer using HIs requires a lengthy exper

Interpretable Deep Regression Models With Interval-Censored Failure Time Data.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have become powerful tools for modeling complex data structures through sequentially integrating simple functions in each hidden layer. In survival analysis, recent advances of DNNs primarily focus on enhancing model capabilities, especially in exploring nonlinear covariate effects under right censoring. However, deep learning methods for interval-censored data, where the unobservable failure time is only known to lie in an interval, remain underexplored and limited to specific data types or models. This work proposes a general regression framework for interval-cens

A computational framework for fitting biophysical basal-ganglia network models, applied to Parkinsonian beta oscillations.

Objective.Fitting biophysically detailed spiking-network models to data is constrained by computational cost: simulating thousands of coupled conductance-based neurons at sub-millisecond time steps makes large parameter searches impractical on conventional hardware, so circuit-level models have relied on manual tuning, reduced neuron formalisms, or modest network sizes. We present an integrated pipeline that makes automated, data-driven fitting of such models tractable on a single cloud graphics processing unit (GPU).Approach.The pipeline couples a just-in-time (JIT) compiled implementation of

A Contrastive Learning Framework for Efficient Viral Escape Prediction.

Understanding the complex rules and mechanisms behind viral evolution is crucial for developing better preventive treatments, yet predicting immune-evading mutations remains challenging. Recent advances in protein language models have led to novel approaches for in silico analysis of viral escape. We introduce CoV-SNN, unifying variant classification and escape prediction within an efficient contrastive learning framework. CoV-SNN, built on a Siamese neural network architecture, classifies previously unseen variants by modeling sequence-level similarities and differences through embeddings fro

Real-Time and Precise 3-D Lesion Reconstruction With Boundary Point Clouds for Robotic Ultrasound Scanning.

In robot-assisted breast ultrasound scanning, conventional 2-D imaging often fails to fully capture the spatial morphology of lesions, limiting clinicians' ability to obtain intuitive structural information. In addition, variations in patient body type and examination posture lead to significant scanning range fluctuations. Conventional voxel-based 3-D reconstruction methods rely heavily on pre-defined voxel grid size and position but inappropriate settings can adversely affect lesion feature data acquisition and computation, potentially resulting in inaccurate 3-D lesion reconstruction.
