Effect of skull morphology on fox snow diving.

Certain fox species plunge-dive into snow to catch prey (e.g., rodents), a hunting mechanism called mousing. Red and arctic foxes can dive into snow at speeds ranging between 2 and 4 m/s. Such mousing behavior is facilitated by a slim, narrow facial structure. Here, we investigate how foxes dive into snow efficiently by studying the role of skull morphology on impact forces it experiences. In this study, we reproduce the mousing behavior in the lab using three-dimensional (3D) printed fox skulls dropped into fresh snow to quantify the dynamic force of impact. Impact force into snow is modeled

Bimetallic Cu5Zn8 alloy-embedded hollow porous carbon nanocubes derived from 3D-Cu/ZIF-8 as efficient electrocatalysts for environmental pollutant detection in water bodies.

Excessive use of nitrofurantoin (NFT) and its residues can be harmful to the ecosystem, and to mitigate this, rapid and cost-effective detection of NFT in water bodies is needed. In this regard, we prepared a three-dimensional (3D) copper-zeolitic imidazole framework (Cu/ZIF-8)-derived bimetallic Cu5Zn8 alloy-embedded hollow porous carbon nanocubes (Cu5Zn8/HPCNC) for electrochemical detection of NFT. The resultant material is characterized using suitable spectrophotometry and voltammetry methods. Cu5Zn8/HPCNC is an effective electrocatalyst with high electrical conductivity and a fast electron

Beyond Implant Design: Surgical Principles and Early Outcomes of Patient-Specific Scapular Reconstruction After Total Scapulectomy.

Background/Objectives: Total scapulectomy for malignant scapular tumors remains a major reconstructive challenge because resection removes the osseous framework, muscular insertions, and biomechanical support required for shoulder function. Patient-specific three-dimensional (3D)-printed implants may improve anatomical reconstruction, but the indications and surgical principles underlying successful total scapular replacement remain poorly defined. Methods: This retrospective single-center case series included the first three consecutive patients who underwent total scapulectomy followed by im

Remote Training of Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery With Advanced Manufactured 3D Sinus Models and a Telemedicine System.

Objective: Traditionally, cadaveric courses have been an important tool in surgical education for Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS). The recent COVID-19 pandemic, however, has had a significant global impact on such courses due to its travel restrictions, social distancing regulations, and infection risk. Here, we report the world-first remote (Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery) FESS training course between Japan and Australia, utilizing novel 3D-printed sinus models. We examined the feasibility and educational effect of the course conducted entirely remotely with encrypted telemedi

Determination and use of patient curvature correction factors by measurement in electron monitor unit calculations.

In our department, monitor units (MU) for electron treatments are calculated using a Monte Carlo algorithm in the RayStation treatment planning system and independently checked using RadCalc software. An audit found that 22 of 50 independent checks failed the ± 5% local tolerance level. One of the causes for the discrepancy was thought to be that the RadCalc calculation takes no account of the patient surface curvature. Three-dimensional printed moulds were used to create wax "domes" and "bowls" with curvatures ranging from +0.33 cm-1 to -0.13 cm-1. The dose per MU delivered at dmax, under the

The Application of Low-fidelity Chest Tube Insertion Using Remote Telesimulation in Training Healthcare Professionals.

Healthcare professionals practicing in rural, remote, or resource-restricted areas have little opportunity to practice "high stakes low-frequency" clinical procedures, despite having higher rates of injury-related death than city inhabitants. Availability of clinical skills instructors, the expense of practicing skills, lack of educational sessions, and distance to simulation centres can be a barrier to teaching and skill maintenance, particularly in rural settings. Telesimulation has the potential to overcome these challenges using audio-visual technology to connect rural learners with instru

Regenerative and tissue engineering strategies for segmental mandibular reconstruction.

Segmental mandibular reconstruction following major ablative surgery, tumor resection, trauma, or osteonecrosis remains a formidable clinical challenge due to the region's complex anatomical, functional, and aesthetic demands. Although autologous vascularized bone grafts, such as the fibula free flap, remain the gold standard, they are limited by donor-site morbidity, restricted vertical height, and geometric incongruence. Bone tissue engineering offers a promising alternative by combining biomaterial scaffolds, osteogenic cells, and bioactive molecules to regenerate functional bone. Advances

Suture Packaging as a Marker for Intraoperative Image Alignment in Augmented Reality on Mobile Devices.

Preoperative vascular imaging has become standard practice in the planning of microsurgical breast reconstruction. Currently, translating perforator locations from radiological findings to a patient's abdomen is often not easy or intuitive. Techniques using three-dimensional printing or patient-specific guides have been introduced to superimpose anatomy onto the abdomen for reference. Augmented and mixed reality is currently actively investigated for perforator mapping by superimposing virtual models directly onto the patient. Most techniques have found only limited adoption due to complexity

Accuracy of lingual fixed retainers fabricated using a CAD/CAM bending machine.

OBJECTIVE: Lingual fixed retainers, made from 0.0175-inch 3-strand twisted stainless steel wire (TW) and 0.016 × 0.022-inch straight rectangular wire (RW), are generally used in clinical practice. This study aimed to calculate their accuracy by comparing the discrepancy between computer-aided customized retainers made from these two types of wires. METHODS: Eleven orthodontic patients were selected, resulting in 22 maxillary and mandibular three-dimensional printing dental models. Two types of lingual fixed retainers were bonded from canine to canine. To determine the accuracy, five points we

Smartphone-Based SARS-CoV-2 and Variants Detection System using Colorimetric DNAzyme Reaction Triggered by Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) with Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR).

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has affected people for over two years. Moreover, the emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants has raised concerns regarding its accurate diagnosis. Here, we report a colorimetric DNAzyme reaction triggered by loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) with clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR), referred to as DAMPR assay for detecting SARS-CoV-2 and variants genes with attomolar sensitivity within an hour. The CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9) system eliminated false-positive signals of L

Molecular and functional extracellular vesicle analysis using nanopatterned microchips monitors tumor progression and metastasis.

Longitudinal cancer monitoring is crucial to clinical implementation of precision medicine. There is growing evidence indicating important functions of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in tumor progression and metastasis, including matrix remodeling via transporting matrix metalloproteases (MMPs). However, the clinical relevance of EVs remains largely undetermined, partially owing to challenges in EV analysis. Distinct from existing technologies mostly focused on characterizing molecular constituents of EVs, here we report a nanoengineered lab-on-a-chip system that enables integrative functional a

Protocol for fully digital and customized management of concomitant temporomandibular joint replacement and orthognathic surgery.

End-stage temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disease is caused by a multitude of pathological processes that impair TMJ anatomy and function. In many cases, end-stage TMJ disease and dentofacial skeletal deformities coexist. The optimal treatment for such conditions is total alloplastic joint replacement and orthognathic surgery. Such procedures have historically been conducted in two separate stages. Furthermore, while technological improvements resulting from the widespread adoption of virtual reality initially led to significant improvements in the field of orthognathic planning, the adoption of

Patient specific biomodel of the whole aorta - the importance of calcified plaque removal.

BACKGROUND: The use of anatomical models produced by 3D printing technique (rapid prototyping, RP) is gaining increased acceptance as a complementary tool for planning complex surgical interventions. This paper describes a method for creating a patient specific replica of the whole aorta. METHODS: Computed tomography angiography (CTA) DICOM-data was converted to a three-dimensional computer aided design-model (CAD) of the inner wall of the aorta representing the lumen where the calcified plaque contribution was removed in a multi-step editing-manoeuvre. The edited CAD-model was used for creat
