Prevalence of pathological gambling and associated problems in individuals who visit non-gambling video arcades.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the gambling behavior of individuals who frequent non-gambling video games arcades. One hundred and twenty two subjects (mean age of 19.2 years (SD=5.5); males constituted 82.8%) who spend time in arcades completed the South Oaks Gambling Screen and the Jacob's Health Survey. The results showed that 10.7% were identified as probable pathological gamblers and 14.8% were problem gamblers. The frequency of visits to arcades for non-gambling activities appeared to be correlated with the extent to which individuals gamble, and is furthermore ass

Relationship between psychiatric diagnosis and patient aggression.

Patient aggression is a common problem on psychiatric units. Recent research has focused on the relationship between aggressive behavior and various patient characteristics, including psychopathology. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between diagnostic groups and particular types of patient aggression in a state psychiatric hospital. A secondary analysis was performed on existing data. There was no significant difference noted among DSM III diagnoses in total patient aggression. However, there was a significant difference between individuals with organic disorders and

"Abandoned" parents. Loss of traditional family support systems. A challenge for health professionals.

Maternal incompetence in childrearing is described in three widely different cultural settings in the southern Negev area of Israel. It is suggested that this incompetence stems from "abandonment" of the parents by traditional family support systems and is reinforced by the inability or lack of readiness of the health system to supply the missing support mechanisms. This picture of parental "abandonment" in widely different cultural settings in Israel may represent an end result of cultural and social upheaval common to other communities in the world. Techniques for prevention include improvin

Nutritional intervention: a key to child survival.

In a collaborative relationship, researchers from the Cebu Institute of Medicine and from the United States have carried out a series of longitudinal studies of breast feeding and infant growth in a rural Philippine community. On the basis of our findings, we have conducted field experiments designed to have mothers improve their infants' diets using locally available food. Contingent reinforcement strategies were used successfully to get mothers to change their behavior and beliefs about infant feeding practices. The use of reinforcements resulted in improved diets and very high rates of cont

Review: drug induced akathisia in medical and surgical patients.

Drug-induced akathisia is a significant and common iatrogenic disorder. It involves both a subjective component of a disturbing sense of compulsion to move and an objective component of motor restlessness. Akathisia is being seen with increasing frequency in medical and surgical patients. This is due to the increased use of anti-emetics or novel adjuncts to pain control as well as more widespread use of the major psychoactive drugs throughout medicine. This review focuses on diagnostic features of the disorder as well as on possible treatment approaches. In addition, the disorder demonstrates

The impact of structured activities among Palestinian children in a time of conflict.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence of the impact on children's well-being of exposure to political conflict in such settings as the Palestinian territories. This study examined the impact of child-focused interventions involving structured activities, supported by provision of equipment and training of facilitators. The focus of interventions was participation in recreational, cultural and other non-formal activities supporting the development of resilience. Impacts were hypothesised on children's social and emotional well-being, relationships with parents and degree of future orientation.

Sex differences in autonomic correlates of conduct problems and aggression.

OBJECTIVE: To examine sex differences in autonomic nervous system functioning in children and adolescents with conduct problems and to evaluate the role of aggression in predicting autonomic nervous system functioning, over and above the effects of disruptive behavior. Although deficiencies in autonomic responding among boys with oppositional defiant disorder and/or conduct disorder are well documented, it remains unclear whether such findings extend to girls or apply only to children with aggressive forms of conduct problems. METHOD: Electrodermal responding, cardiac pre-ejection period, and

Who is the ideal match for the modular approach to therapy for children (MATCH)? Symptom moderators of transdiagnostic treatment response.

OBJECTIVE: Comorbidity of internalizing and externalizing problems is common in youths; transdiagnostic treatments were developed partly to address comorbidity. However, little is known about how outcomes of these treatments relate to comorbidity. We examined the association between internalizing-externalizing comorbidity and symptom outcomes for the transdiagnostic Modular Approach to Therapy for Children with Anxiety, Depression, Trauma, or Conduct Problems. METHOD: We analyzed data from three randomized controlled trials. Participants (N = 400) were sorted into four categories using baseli

Prenatal cannabis exposure predicts attention problems, without changes on fMRI in adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that prenatal cannabis exposure (PCE) would be associated with increased attention problems and altered neurocognition in young adolescents. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD study®), a cohort of approximately 12,000 children. Presence or absence of PCE after knowledge of pregnancy was measured by caregiver report. All participants with PCE (N = 224) were included and compared to two control groups; those matched on tobacco and alcohol exposure and those without prenatal tobacco or alcohol exposures. Outcomes were mea

Participant versus informant reports of changes in social, emotional, and financial functioning after an exercise intervention with older adults: an actor-partner interdependence model analysis.

Informant reports are potentially valuable, yet underutilized, measures for non-cognitive outcomes in older adults. Specifically, informant reports from close others may offer insights into changes in observable functional status and behavior beyond what participants report. In the context of an experimental exercise protocol in older adults, informant reports could potentially demonstrate changes in functional status and behavior that are unnoticed by participants but observable by others, based on the reliability of some informant report measures in this population. Given the interdependence

Evaluating the effectiveness of a training program that builds teachers' capability to identify and appropriately refer middle and high school students with mental health problems in Brazil: an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: In Brazil, like many countries, there has been a failure to identify mental health problems (MHP) in young people and refer them to appropriate care and support. The school environment provides an ideal setting to do this. Therefore, effective programs need to be developed to train teachers to identify and appropriately refer children with possible MHP. We aimed to evaluate teachers' ability to identify and appropriately refer students with possible MHP, and the effectiveness of a psychoeducational strategy to build teachers' capability in this area. METHODS: To meet the first obj

Bridging Intervention and Implementation Research for More Personalized Behavioral Health.

Despite advances in behavioral health research, the burden of behavioral health disorders continues to grow. One explanation for the persistent challenges to improved behavioral health outcomes is the misalignment between behavioral health research and the diverse and complex needs of individuals served in real-world settings. Reimagining how interventions are developed, tested, and implemented to be more personalized could result in better alignment with the unique biopsychosocial mechanisms, contextual circumstances, and treatment goals of individuals. We outline four shifts to advance more
