Cortical mechanisms of across-ear speech integration investigated using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS).

This study aimed to investigate integration of alternating speech, a stimulus which classically produces a V-shaped speech intelligibility function with minimum at 2-6 Hz in typical-hearing (TH) listeners. We further studied how degraded speech impacts intelligibility across alternating rates (2, 4, 8, and 32 Hz) using vocoded speech, either in the right ear or bilaterally, to simulate single-sided deafness with a cochlear implant (SSD-CI) and bilateral CIs (BiCI), respectively. To assess potential cortical signatures of across-ear integration, we recorded activity in the bilateral auditory co

The influence of cognitive aspects and auditory processes on the hearing aid acclimatization in the elderly.

PURPOSE: To verify the speech recognition processes in a monoaural task and in a binaural integration task with dichotic listening, and to compare them to the cognitive processing in elderly subjects pre and post hearing aid acclimatization. METHODS: Participants were 60 elderly subjects of both genders, ranging in age from 61 to 85 years. They were evaluated for cognitive aspects by means of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS-Cog). To evaluate speech processes in a monoaural task and in a binaural integration task with dichotic listeni

Effectiveness of the heat-activated nitinol smart piston stapes prosthesis in stapedectomy surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the SMart piston stapes prosthesis to a standard manual crimp prosthesis on operative time and air-bone gap (ABG) closure in stapedectomy. DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. SETTING: Tertiary referral centre. METHODS: The charts of patients undergoing stapedectomy for otosclerosis were analyzed. We compared the results of 76 patients (80 ears) who received the autocrimping SMart piston prosthesis to those of 21 patients (21 ears) who received the conventional manual crimp Fisch-type prosthesis. Data were analyzed using t-test, chi-square, or two-way analysis of varian

[Computerized tomography in children and adolescents with suspected petrous bone abnormality].

PURPOSE: To demonstrate HRCT findings and their therapeutic relevance in suspected congenital hearing disorders. MATERIAL AND METHODS: It was checked in 96 young patients if HRCT findings of the temporal bone could explain functional findings. Furthermore, the therapeutic consequences were noted. RESULTS: Normal CT and normal functional findings were obtained in 49 temporal bones (TB). In conductive hearing loss (41 TB), dysplasias of the conducting apparatus (37 TB) and inflammatory changes (3 TB) were found. Combined hearing loss (18 TB) was clarified completely or partially in half the ca

AI-Assisted Compressed Sensing for Optimized Inner Ear Imaging: a Multi-Rater MRI Evaluation of CSAI T2-DRIVE.

PURPOSE: High-resolution T2-weighted imaging is essential for preoperative assessment before cochlear implantation. Compressed sensing (CS) with AI-based reconstruction (CSAI) reduces acquisition times whilst preserving image quality. Although CSAI has been established in various clinical applications, its performance in inner ear imaging remains unclear. This study assesses CSAI-optimized T2-DRIVE sequences at different resolutions and acquisition times for visualizing inner ear structures. METHODS: In 30 healthy participants, CS T2-DRIVE was acquired at isotropic resolutions of 0.65, 0.5, a…

OBJECTIVE: Otologic surgery requires detailed anatomical knowledge and advanced technical skills, making laboratory training relevant. The l … cluding tympanoplasty, ossicular chain reconstruction, stapedotomy, facial nerve decompression, and cochlear implantation were reported using microscopic and endoscopic techniques. Studies reported reductions in operative time, improved technical accuracy, and increased participant confidence. The model was consistently described as low cost, generally available, and e …

Acoustically Evoked Short Latency Negative Response and Vestibule Function in Patients With Enlarged Vestibular Aqueduct.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the associations between acoustically evoked short latency negative response (ASNR) and vestibular function in patients with large vestibular aqueduct syndrome (LVAS) before and after cochlear implantation (CI). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: Tertiary medical center. METHODS: The records of 64 patients (32 with bilateral LVAS and 32 with no inner ear malformations [IEMs]) who underwent unilateral CI were reviewed. Among them, the auditory brainstem response of 17 LVAS patients who presented with bilateral ASNRs was reassessed after CI, with a mean fol…

Despite optimal early treatment, progressive hearing loss necessitated cochlear implantation. Case 2, a three-year-old male, exhibited recurrent anemia, difficult-to-control diabetes despite insulin therapy, and established sensorineural hearing impairment, following a stroke at age two. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this study is to identify a relationship between Paget disease and sensorineural, conductive, and mixed hearing loss. METHODS: Using the TriNetx Analytics Network, a retrospective database review was performed. The database was queried for patients with a diagnosis of Paget disease. A control group was created by querying all patients without a diagnosis of Paget. Patients in both the control and study group with a diagnosis of hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo, and cochlear implantation were recorded, propensity-matched by age, hypertension, diabetes, aspir…

On the radiologic anatomy of pediatric sinus tympani: HRCT study.

OBJECTIVE: Sinus tympani (ST) is considered the most constant among retrotympanic recesses but it is of great anatomical variability in shape and relation to mastoid portion of facial nerve. ST is difficult to access when clearing the cholesteatoma or serving as a window for cochlear implantation. The objective was to describe morphology of ST and assess feasibility of retrofacial approach in children under 5 years old. METHODS: HRCT images of 150 children were reviewed. The type of sinus tympani was assessed according to Marchioni's classification. Width of entrance to sinus tympani (STW), d…
