Psychopathology of Online Poker Players: Review of Literature.

Background and aims Online Texas Hold'em poker has become a spectacular form of entertainment in our society, and the number of people who use this form of gambling is increasing. It seems that online poker activity challenges existing theoretical concepts about problem gambling behaviors. The purpose of this literature review is to provide a current overview about the population of online poker players. Methods To be selected, articles had to focus on psychopathology in a sample of online poker players, be written in English or French, and be published before November 2015. A total of 17 rele

Predictors of healthcare service utilization for mental health reasons.

This study was designed to identify: (1) predictors of 12-month healthcare service utilization for mental health reasons, framed by the Andersen model, among a population cohort in an epidemiological catchment area; and (2) correlates associated with healthcare service utilization for mental health reasons among individuals with and without mental disorders respectively. Analyses comprised univariate, bivariate, and multiple regression analyses. Being male, having poor quality of life, possessing better self-perception of physical health, and suffering from major depressive episodes, panic dis

A cluster analysis of tic symptoms in children and adults with Tourette syndrome: clinical correlates and treatment outcome.

Cluster analytic methods have examined the symptom presentation of chronic tic disorders (CTDs), with limited agreement across studies. The present study investigated patterns, clinical correlates, and treatment outcome of tic symptoms. 239 youth and adults with CTDs completed a battery of assessments at baseline to determine diagnoses, tic severity, and clinical characteristics. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either a comprehensive behavioral intervention for tics (CBIT) or psychoeducation and supportive therapy (PST). A cluster analysis was conducted on the baseline Yale Glob

Maternal parenting styles and mother-child relationship among adolescents with and without persistent attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

We investigated mothering and mother-child interactions in adolescents with and without persistent attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in a sample of 190 adolescents with persistent DSM-IV ADHD, 147 without persistent ADHD, and 223 without ADHD. Both participants and their mothers received psychiatric interviews for diagnosis of ADHD and other mental disorders; and reported on the Parental Bonding Instrument about mother's parenting style, the Social Adjustment Inventory for Children and Adolescents for interactions with mothers and home behavioral problems. The mothers also report

Clinical management of trichotillomania with bimatoprost.

PURPOSE: This case report presents the use of bimatoprost 0.03% to help regrow eyelashes on a patient suffering from trichotillomania. Trichotillomania is characterized by repetitive compulsive hair pulling that leads to noticeable hair loss. Trichotillomania sufferers are affected by this condition in many ways including shame, embarrassment, guilt, and lower self-esteem. Although a formal therapy regimen does not exist, current treatment approaches include behavioral therapy and pharmacotherapy. In cases where a patient pulls the eyelashes, topical bimatoprost (Latisse) may be used to treat

Motor inhibition and cognitive flexibility in pathologic skin picking.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with pathologic skin picking (PSP) often report significant difficulty resisting the urges and drive to engage in picking behavior. Studies have shown significant inhibitory deficiencies (i.e. increased impulsivity) in subjects with other putative obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders, such as trichotillomania, using objective tests. This study sought to assess motor inhibitory control and aspects of cognitive flexibility in a sample of individuals with PSP. METHOD: Twenty subjects with PSP (mean age 33.1+/-14.3 years; 85% female) and 20 healthy controls (mean age 31

Neurobiology and neurodevelopmental impact of childhood traumatic stress and prenatal alcohol exposure.

PURPOSE: Research reveals that prenatal alcohol exposure and child trauma (i.e., abuse, neglect, sexual abuse) can have deleterious effects on child development across multiple domains. This study analyzed the impact on childhood neurodevelopment of prenatal alcohol exposure and postnatal traumatic experience compared to postnatal traumatic experience alone. Although the harmful effects of both have been well documented individually, there is no research documenting the concurrent effects of prenatal alcohol exposure and postnatal trauma on a child's developmental process. METHOD: Transdiscip

Psychiatric comorbidity in binge-eating disorder as a function of smoking history.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the comorbidity of psychiatric disorders in obese women with binge-eating disorder (BED) as a function of smoking history. METHOD: A consecutive series of 103 obese treatment-seeking women with current DSM-IV diagnoses of BED were administered structured diagnostic interviews to assess all DSM-IV Axis I psychiatric disorders. Participants were classified as "never" or "daily" smokers, and lifetime rates of comorbid psychopathology were compared across smoking groups using logistic regression. The study was conducted from February 2003 to March 2005. RESULTS: Smokers wer

Personality dimensions and criminal arrest.

Previous studies have implicated antisocial personality disorder in criminal behavior, but little is known about the association between "normal" personality dimensions and arrest. We investigated the relationships between these personality dimensions and prior arrest in a sample of adults participating in a longitudinal epidemiological study. Between 1993 and 1999, psychiatrists re-examined subjects who were originally interviewed in Baltimore in 1981 as part of the Epidemiologic Catchment Area study; the psychiatrists diagnosed axis I and axis II disorders according to DSM-IV criteria. Expression of c-fos in auditory and non-auditory brain regions of the gerbil after manipulations that induce tinnitus.

Subjective tinnitus is a phantom sound sensation that does not result from acoustic stimulation and is audible to the affected subject only. Tinnitus-like sensations in animals can be evoked by procedures that also cause tinnitus in humans. In gerbils, we investigated brain activation after systemic application of sodium salicylate or exposure to loud noise, both known to be reliable tinnitus-inductors. Brains were screened for neurons containing the c-fos protein. After salicylate injections, auditory cortex was the only auditory area with consistently increased numbers of immunoreactive neur

School violence: an insider view.

PURPOSE: To discover what teachers perceive to be contributing factors to violence in schools. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Open-ended questions were asked of a convenience sample of teachers ( = 396) during an in-service education program on school violence. The teachers were in a semi-rural school district in a Mid-Atlantic state. Answers were analyzed using content analysis; all responses were reviewed and important themes were extracted. Identified themes were then placed into suitable categories and studied to determine relationships. RESULTS: Of the surveys analyzed ( = 239), 13 themes we

[A case of obsessive symptoms in Huntington's disease].

INTRODUCTION: Recently, some authors have postulated the existence of the so-called <<obsessive spectrum>>. This would include disorders that have the common point of the presence of repetitive thoughts and actions, which may either have a <<compulsive>> or <<impulsive>> nature. Certain neurological disorders with repetitive movements have also been grouped within this spectrum, including some forms of epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, Sydenham's Chorea or Huntington's disease. There is evidence that physiopathological connections may exist between some of these conditions. METHODS: A case of a

Selection of actions in the basal ganglia-thalamocortical circuits: review and model.

The paper reviews the 20-year experience of recording impulse activity of neurons in the basal ganglia-thalamocortical circuits. These recordings were made from patients with Parkinson's disease who failed to respond to conventional medical treatment and who had undergone stereotaxic neurosurgery. When taken together, the results show that: (1) the basal ganglia-thalamocortical circuits become active only when a stimulus is attended or when a movement is voluntarily implemented, i.e. they are involved in the process of selection of an appropriate sensory stimulus for advanced processing and in

Self-reported inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity at ages 15 and 18 years in the general population.

OBJECTIVE: Prevalence, impact, and continuity of self-reported attention deficit disorder (ADD) symptomology from ages 15 to 18 years were examined in a longitudinal study of a New Zealand birth cohort. METHOD: At age 15, prevalence of ADD symptomology was estimated, with no gender differences found in self-reported symptomology. Four adolescents (0.5%) met full DSM-III criteria for ADD. Adolescents scoring higher than 1.5 SD above the sample mean on total ADD symptom score were identified as having high levels of ADD symptomology. RESULTS: Male and female adolescents reporting ADD symptomol

Psychological correlates of frequency and type of drug use among jail inmates.

The comorbidity of drug abuse and various forms of psychopathology is pervasive and well documented. In particular, the incidence of depression, anxiety, and antisocial personality disorder is high among substance abusers relative to non-drug abusers. Offender populations have a high rate of substance abuse, and some studies suggest that the incidence of psychopathology may be even greater than in other drug using groups. In order to identify specific types of psychopathology as they relate to drug preferences and frequency of use among drug-using offenders, arrestees at the Baltimore City Det

The dissolution of the dyad in psychiatry: implications for the understanding of patient-therapist sexual misconduct.

Psychiatry has undergone multiple changes in this century. Some twenty years ago, Kubie describe a move away from patients, particularly in those practitioners involved in academic psychiatry. His concern was warranted; such a trend appears to have involved much of psychiatry. There has been a markedly decreased emphasis in viewing the operative unit of psychiatric inquiry as a dyad of the physician and patient, in which the parties inescapably influence each other. Newer treatments tend to employ the physician as a more independent entity that applies necessary treatment to the patient. Conco
