BACKGROUND: The generation of heat during osteotomy preparation is a significant risk factor for thermal osteonecrosis, which may lead to implant failure. While static surgical guides enhance placement accuracy, they can physically obstruct the flow of external coolant, paradoxically increasing the risk for thermal injury.
METHODS: (1) Review of thermal necrosis and critical temperatures during osteotomy preparation. Advantages and disadvantages of static guided surgery. (2) Design and fabrication of static surgical guides with direct coolant channels to the osteotomy site. Variations include

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sampling at the lumbar subarachnoid space (LSS) is technically challenging to learn. Currently, training relies on cadaver availability or performance in a clinical scenario. This study aims to develop and validate a low-cost, high-fidelity simulator to train in this technique. Using three-dimensional printing technology, a model of a healthy adult dog's lumbosacral vertebral column was produced. The model was augmented with synthetic materials and a fluidic system to replicate all procedural steps and permit successful CSF collection. The simulator was validated by f

Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in irreversible neuronal loss, cystic cavitation, and a chronically hostile microenvironment that severely limits endogenous repair. Conventional stem cell transplantation is frequently compromised by low cell survival, uncontrolled differentiation, and rapid cell loss. To address these challenges, we developed a mechano-responsive, three-dimensional bioprinted scaffold composed of gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) and chitosan (CS), featuring an elastic modulus of 10.0 kPa, interconnected porous architecture, and photocrosslinkable bioactivity that recapitulate key

Excessive dynamic airway collapse (EDAC) contributes to breathlessness and reduced quality of life in individuals with emphysema. We tested a novel, portable, oral positive expiratory pressure (o-PEP) device in a patient with emphysema and EDAC. MRI revealed expiratory tracheal narrowing to 80 mm2 that increased to 170 mm2 with the o-PEP device. After 2-weeks use of the o-PEP device for 33% to 66% of activities, breathlessness, quality of life, and exertional dyspnea improved compared with minimal clinically important differences (MCID): University of California-San Diego Shortness of Breath q

3D-printing and additive manufacturing can be powerful techniques to design customized structures and produce synthetic bone grafts with multifunctional effects suitable for bone repair. In our work we aimed the development of novel multifunctionalized 3D printed poly(lactic acid) (PLA) scaffolds with bioinspired surface coatings able to reduce bacterial biofilm formation while favoring human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) activity. For that purpose, 3D printing was used to prepare PLA scaffolds that were further multifunctionalized with collagen (Col), minocycline (MH) and

Myocardial remodeling, including ventricular dilation and wall thinning, is an important pathological process caused by myocardial infarction (MI). To intervene in this pathological process, a new type of cardiac scaffold composed of a thermoset (poly-[glycerol sebacate], PGS) and a thermoplastic (poly-[ε-caprolactone], PCL) is directly printed by employing fused deposition modeling 3D-printing technology. The PGS-PCL scaffold possesses stacked construction with regular crisscrossed filaments and interconnected micropores and exhibits superior mechanical properties. In vitro studies demonstrat

BACKGROUND: Ex-vivo cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging has played an important role in the validation of in-vivo CMR characterization of pathological processes. However, comparison between in-vivo and ex-vivo imaging remains challenging due to shape changes occurring between the two states, which may be non-uniform across the diseased heart. A novel two-step process to facilitate registration between ex-vivo and in-vivo CMR was developed and evaluated in a porcine model of chronic myocardial infarction (MI).

BACKGROUND: Patients with talar avascular necrosis (AVN) have limited treatment options to manage their symptoms. Historically, surgical options have been limited and can leave patients with little ankle motion and have high failure rates. The use of custom 3D printed total talar replacements (TTRs) has arisen as a treatment option for these patients, possibly allowing better preservation of hindfoot motion. We hypothesized that patients undergoing TTR will demonstrate a statistically significant improvement in Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS) at 1 year after surgery.
METHODS: We retrospec

BACKGROUND: Sympathetic nerves are known to release three neurotransmitters: norepinephrine, ATP, and neuropeptide Y that play a role in controlling vascular tone. This paper focuses on the co-release of norepinephrine and ATP from the mesenteric arterial sympathetic nerves of the rat.
NEW METHOD: In this paper, a quantification technique is described that allows simultaneous detection of norepinephrine and ATP in a near-real-time fashion from the isolated perfused mesenteric arterial bed of the rat. Simultaneous detection is enabled with 3-D printing technology, which is shown to help integr

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Personalized medicine tailors interventions to a patient's unique anatomy and physiology. Three-dimensional printing (3DP) enables this precision for complex airway disease, including tracheal stenosis, tracheobronchomalacia, aerodigestive fistulas, and segmental defects, where conventional silicone or metallic stents and surgical reconstruction often fail to provide durable, anatomically congruent solutions. Tissue engineering and 3DP promise patient-specific devices and regenerative scaffolds that maintain patency, resist collapse, and minimize immunogenicity. This

BACKGROUND: A symptomatic os acromiale can lead to impingement syndrome and rotator cuff tendinopathy. An acromion fracture is often part of a more complex scapular trauma that needs stabilisation.
METHODS: We developed a new technique using a three-dimensional (3D) model and a distal clavicle reconstruction plate to treat os acromiale and acromion fractures. Our hypothesis was that such an approach would be a useful addition to the existing techniques. First, a 3D model of the acromion was printed, then an osteosynthesis plate was pre-bent to fit the exact shape and curve of the acromion. We

Successful prosthetic rehabilitation following lower-limb amputation depends upon a safe and comfortable socket-residual limb interface. Current practice predominantly uses a subjective, iterative process to establish socket shape, often requiring several visits to a prosthetist. This study proposes an objective methodology for residual-limb shape scanning and analysis by high-resolution, automated measurements. A three-dimensional printed "analog" residuum was scanned with three surface digitizers on 10 occasions. Accuracy was measured by the scan height error between repeat analog scans and

The human endometrium, a dynamic tissue responsive to sex hormones, plays a pivotal role in female reproduction and menstrual cycling, comprising diverse cell populations including epithelial and stromal cells. The development of in vitro endometrial models holds substantial potential for tissue repair, drug discovery, and disease modeling. However, the construction of biomimetic structural in vitro models capable of supporting long-term culture and preserving relevant biological functions has been hindered by limitations in both material properties and fabrication strategies. Here, an enzymat

The rapid development of the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence has sharply increased the demand for secure, low-cost, and scalable anticounterfeiting technologies. Physical unclonable functions (PUFs) offer intrinsic protection by converting stochastic material variations into unique identifiers, but their practical implementation is often limited by complex fabrication, toxic luminophores, and low information complexity arising from single-channel readout. Here, we develop a copper(I) iodide cluster-poly(methyl methacrylate) fluorescent PUF through a single ambient coating step.

Polymer-based three-dimensional (3D) printing has evolved from a prototyping approach toward a manufacturing strategy with emerging clinical relevance for individualized dosage forms, local drug depots, microneedle systems, microfluidic cartridges, biosensor housings and integrated theranostic platforms. Its value arises from the simultaneous control of polymer chemistry, device architecture and process history: infill, porosity, shell thickness, crosslink density, swelling, degradation and surface chemistry can be used as design variables rather than incidental manufacturing outcomes.
