Lactate as a Potential Exercise-Induced Signaling Molecule: Implications for Immunometabolic Adaptation Following HIIT.

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is widely recognized as an effective strategy for improving cardiorespiratory fitness and metabolic health. Beyond these physiological benefits, growing evidence indicates that HIIT may also induce beneficial immunometabolic adaptations. A key exercise-responsive metabolite in this context is lactate, which is increasingly being recognized not as a metabolic waste product but as a bioactive signaling metabolite capable of coordinating metabolic, inflammatory, and immune processes. This narrative review examines current evidence suggesting a potential rol

Thiobacillus denitrificans enhances nitrogen removal, growth performance, gut histomorphometry, and immunity in fish raised in recirculatory aquaculture systems.

Recirculatory aquaculture systems (RAS) are one of the most sustainable solutions for Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, production. Nitrogenous waste accumulation has been a major constraint to its usage, especially on water quality and fish health. Effects of Thiobacillus denitrificans on nitrogen removal, water quality, microbial abundance, and growth performance as well as the immunity of Nile tilapia cultured in RAS were examined in this study. Three treatments were prepared that comprised a control (CTR = no inoculation, standard biofiltration, and sulfur pellets as electron donor), a

Clinical application of polar body-based preimplantation genetic testing for maternal mutations in women with a limited number of oocytes.

BACKGROUND: Trophectoderm (TE) cell biopsy at the blastocyst stage is currently the most common method used in preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic disorders (PGT-M). However, this approach may result in the wasting of some genetically unaffected embryos because only a proportion of zygotes develop to the blastocyst stage. Unaffected embryos, which degenerated during blastomere-blastocyst transformation, may give birth if transferred before the blastocyst stage and may be of great value to women with a low oocyte count. This study sought to investigate the potential application of pol

Heterolanthanide Terephthalate Coordination Polymers: From the Fight against Counterfeiting to Plastic Waste Recycling.

ConspectusThe world's plastics production continues to grow and could triple by 2060. Unfortunately, only a small proportion of these plastics are currently recycled (around 30%). The remainder is incinerated (around 40%), causing high greenhouse gas emissions, or buried (around 30%), resulting in high levels of microplastic pollution. Ambitious national and international policies have been put in place to increase the proportion of recycled plastics, and major research efforts are underway to improve plastic recycling processes. Unfortunately, all recycling processes (chemical, physical, and

Reduced Muscle Loss in Patients With NSCLC Taking Fibrates: Findings From a Retrospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: The cancer-anorexia-cachexia syndrome (CACS) is a common and debilitating wasting disorder characterized by loss of skeletal muscle and worse morbidity and mortality. In pre-clinical studies, CACS is associated with loss of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-α) dependent ketone production in the liver. Fibrates are PPAR-α agonists that are commonly used to treat dyslipidemia. Treating mice with fibrates was found to prevent skeletal muscle loss. We examine whether patients with cancer treated with PPAR-α agonists experience less CACS. METHODS: We performed a re

Severe Hypophosphatemia Induced by Hyperventilation: A Case Report.

Hypophosphatemia is a clinically significant but often underrecognized electrolyte abnormality in acute medicine, arising from decreased intake, increased losses, or intracellular redistribution. One uncommon cause is hyperventilation-induced respiratory alkalosis, which promotes intracellular phosphate shifting and enhanced glycolysis, leading to depletion of serum phosphate. Severe hypophosphatemia may result in neuromuscular, cardiovascular, and metabolic complications, necessitating prompt recognition and management. We report a case of a 38-year-old male patient referred to the Accident a

ESBL Producing E. coli in Chickens and Poultry Farms Environment in Selangor, Malaysia: A Cross-Sectional Study on Their Occurrence and Associated Risk Factors With Environment and Public Health Importance.

INTRODUCTION: Extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-EC) are widespread multidrug-resistant zoonotic bacteria that threaten animal production, food safety and antimicrobial therapy worldwide including Malaysia. Poultry has been reported as one of the pathways for human exposure to ESBL-EC. There has been little research on the occurrence of ESBL-EC within the Malaysian poultry food chain. Hence, the objectives of the study were to determine the occurrence of ESBL-EC in chickens and to identify the potential risk factors associated with their occurrence in poultry farms.

What blood conservation practices are effective at reducing blood sampling volumes and other clinical sequelae in intensive care? A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to critically appraise and synthesise evidence for blood conservation strategies in intensive care. Blood sampling is a critical aspect of intensive care to guide clinical decision-making. Repeated blood sampling can result in blood waste and contamination, leading to iatrogenic anaemia and systemic infection. REVIEW METHOD USED: Cochrane systematic review methods were used including meta-analysis, and independent reviewers. DATA SOURCES: A systematic search was conducted in Medline, CINAHL, PUBMED and EMBASE databases. The search was limited to ra

Technical Note: Impact of impurities on Yttrium-90 glass microsphere activity quantitation.

BACKGROUND: Glass 90 Y microspheres are produced with known radionuclide impurities. These impurities are not independently monitored. Clinical instruments, including ionization chamber dose calibrators and positron emmission tomography (PET) cameras, can be much more sensitive in detecting signals from these impurities than to signals from 90 Y itself. PURPOSE: The "typical" levels of 90 Y impurities have been studied to assess their impact on dosimetry during internal implantation, and for the management of waste. However, unaccounted-for decay spectra of impurities can also have an impact

A survey of calf management practices and farmer perceptions of calf housing in UK dairy herds.

Adoption of optimal management techniques for rearing dairy calves has significant effects on their health, welfare, and productivity. Despite much published literature on best practice, calf morbidity and mortality rates remain high. This survey aimed to establish current calf management practices in the United Kingdom, along with farmer perceptions surrounding different housing types. A survey containing 48 questions was distributed online to UK farmers via social media, online forums, and a convenience sample of veterinary practices and was completed by 216 participants. A descriptive analy

Sulfide restrains the growth of Methylocapsa acidiphila converting renewable biogas to single cell protein.

Methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) that can use biogas and recycled nitrogen from wastewater as a sustainable feedstock for single cell protein (SCP) synthesis are receiving increasing attention. Though promising, limited knowledge is available on the alternative strains especially the ones that can tolerant to strict environments such as acidic conditions. Furthermore, how would the hydrogen sulfide affect the MOB (especially the alternative strains) for SCP synthesis when crude biogas is used as feedstock is still unknown. In this study, the capability of an acidic-tolerant methanotrophic bact

Featured Article: Immunomodulatory effect of hemozoin on pneumocyte apoptosis via CARD9 pathway, a possibly retarding pulmonary resolution.

Plasmodium falciparum, the most virulent malaria parasite species, causes severe symptoms especially acute lung injury (ALI), of which characterized by alveolar epithelium and endothelium destruction and accelerated to blood-gas-barrier breakdown. Parasitized erythrocytes, endothelial cells, monocytes, and cytokines are all involved in this mechanism, but hemozoin (HZ), the parasitic waste from heme detoxification, also mainly contributes. In addition, it is not clear why type II pneumocyte proliferation, alveolar restorative stage, is rare in malaria-associated ALI. To address this, in vitro

Behaviour of carbon-14 containing low molecular weight organic compounds in contaminated groundwater under aerobic conditions.

Short chain carbon-14 (14C) containing organic compounds can be formed by abiotic oxidation of carbides and impurities within nuclear fuel cladding. During fuel reprocessing and subsequent waste storage there is potential for these organic compounds to enter shallow subsurface environments due to accidental discharges. Currently there is little data on the persistence of these compounds in such environments. Four 14C-labelled compounds (acetate; formate; formaldehyde and methanol) were added to aerobic microcosm experiments that contained glacial outwash sediments and groundwater simulant repr

Adsorption of elemental mercury vapors from synthetic exhaust combustion gas onto HGR carbon.

UNLABELLED: An activated carbon commercially available named HGR, produced by Calgon-Carbon Group, was used to adsorbe metallic mercury. The work is part of a wider research activity by the same group focused on the removal of metallic and divalent mercury from combustion flue gas. With respect to previously published papers, this one is aimed at studying in depth thermodynamic equilibria of metallic mercury adsorption onto a commercial activated carbon. The innovativeness lies in the wider operative conditions explored (temperature and mercury concentrations) and in the evaluation of kinetic

An exploratory randomised double-blind and placebo-controlled phase 2 study of a combination of baclofen, naltrexone and sorbitol (PXT3003) in patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A.

BACKGROUND: Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 1A disease (CMT1A) is a rare orphan inherited neuropathy caused by an autosomal dominant duplication of a gene encoding for the structural myelin protein PMP22, which induces abnormal Schwann cell differentiation and dysmyelination, eventually leading to axonal suffering then loss and muscle wasting. We favour the idea that diseases can be more efficiently treated when targeting multiple disease-relevant pathways. In CMT1A patients, we therefore tested the potential of PXT3003, a low-dose combination of three already approved compounds (baclofen, naltrexone

Transfer of Cystoisospora suis-specific colostral antibodies and their correlation with the course of neonatal porcine cystoisosporosis.

Cystoisospora suis is the most pathogenic species of coccidia in suckling piglets, affecting them predominantly within their first three weeks of life. The clinical signs of neonatal cystoisosporosis include watery diarrhea and wasting, leading to significant economic losses for the farmer. Since neonatal piglets have an immature immune system, colostral transfer of maternal factors such as immune cells or antibodies is essential for controlling infections at that age. However, the role of C. suis-specific antibodies transferred from the sow to the piglets and possible correlations between ant

Sorption and desorption of iron-cyanide complexes in deposited blast furnace sludge.

Blast furnace sludge is a waste originating from pig iron production and contains small amounts of iron-cyanide complexes. Leaching of iron-cyanide complexes from deposited blast furnace sludge into the ground water seems to be possible in principle. We investigated the sorption of the iron-cyanide complexes ferrocyanide, [FeII(CN)6](4-), and ferricyanide, [FeIII(CN)6](3-), in 22 samples of deposited blast furnace sludge in batch experiments. Subsequently, desorption of iron-cyanide complexes was investigated using 1 M NaCl. Sorption in five samples was evaluated with Langmuir isotherms. The b

A review of the chemistry, biological action, and clinical applications of anabolic-androgenic steroids.

BACKGROUND: Since its discovery in 1935, numerous derivatives of testosterone have been synthesized, with the goals of prolonging its biological activity in vivo, producing orally active androgens, and developing products, commonly referred to as anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), that are more anabolic and less androgenic than the parent molecule. OBJECTIVE: This article reviews the structure, biotransformation, and mechanism of action of testosterone and some of the most commonly used AAS. Clinical applications of the AAS are discussed, and guidelines and therapeutic maneuvers for minimizi

The epidemiology and transmission of AIDS: a hypothesis linking behavioural and biological determinants to time, person and place.

Epidemiologically, the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, AIDS, is transmitted and distributed in the USA and Europe almost entirely in well-defined subsets of populations engaging in, or subjected to, the effects of behaviours which carry high risks of genital and systemic infections. The persons predominantly affected are those engaging in promiscuous homosexual and bisexual activity, regular use of addictive drugs, and their sexual and recreational partners. In such persons and in subsets of populations with corresponding life-styles, the risk of AIDS increases by orders of magnitude. Bec
