Tocilizumab Reduces Vasospasms, Neuronal Cell Death, and Microclot Formation in a Rabbit Model of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

Early brain injury (EBI), delayed cerebral vasospasm (DCVS), and delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) are common complications of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Inflammatory processes in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are one of the causes for such complications. Our aim to study the effects of an IL-6 receptor antagonist (Tocilizumab) examines the occurrence of DCVS, neuronal cell death, and microclot formation in an acute SAH rabbit model. Twenty-nine New Zealand white rabbits were randomized into one of three groups as the SAH, SAH + Tocilizumab, and sham groups. In SAH groups, hemorrhage was ind

Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 and Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 Are Associated With Collateral Status in Acute Ischemic Stroke With Large Vessel Occlusion.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In ischemic stroke, inflammatory status may condition the development of collateral circulation. Here we assessed the relationship between systemic inflammatory biomarkers and collateral status in large vessel occlusion before mechanical thrombectomy. METHODS: HIBISCUS-STROKE is a cohort study including acute ischemic stroke patients with large vessel occlusion treated with mechanical thrombectomy following admission magnetic resonance imaging. MMP-9 (matrix metalloproteinase-9) and MCP-1 (monocyte chemoattractant protein-1) were measured on blood sampling collected at

[Successful Total Resection with Preceding Arterial Coil Embolization of Intradural Extramedullary Tumor at Craniovertebral Junction Encasing Dominant-side Vertebral Artery].

OBJECTIVE: The surgical resection of craniovertebral junction(CVJ)meningioma is challenging because of the neighboring brainstem, lower cranial nerves, and vertebral artery(VA). Moreover, encasement of the VA by the tumor can raise the risk of complications and require cautious manipulation during surgery. CASE: A 46-year-old woman presented with a one-year history of neck pain. She had temporal hemiplegia and numbness on her left side. Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)showed a CVJ meningioma pushing the brainstem from the right vertebral side and encasing the right VA. Digital subtraction angi

In vivo comparison of braided (Accero) and laser-cut intracranial stents (Acclino, Credo): evaluation of vessel responses at subacute and mid-term follow-up in a rabbit model.

This study aimed to investigate in vivo two stent technologies, with particular emphasis on thrombogenicity and inflammatory vessel remodeling processes. The micro-stents tested in this study were developed for intracranial aneurysm treatment. In our study twelve, New Zealand white rabbits were divided into two groups: 18 laser-cut stents (LCS) and 18 braided stents (BS) were impanated without admiration of antiplatelet medication. Three stents were implanted into each animal in the common carotid artery, subclavian artery, and abdominal aorta. Digital subtraction angiography was performed bef

Endovascular treatment of cerebellar arteriovenous malformations: A single-center experience of 75 consecutive patients.

AIM: We aimed to determine the safety and effectiveness of endovascular treatment for cerebellar arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between January 2006 and January 2016, 75 patients with cerebellar AVMs underwent endovascular treatment at our department. The clinical and angiographic features, post-procedure complications, occlusion rate, and follow-up outcomes (modified Rankin Scale, mRS) of all the patients were retrospectively reviewed and collected. Multivariable logistic analysis was used to calculate potential risk factors for predicting poor outcomes (mRS ≥3).

Direct Vertebral Artery Puncture During Open Surgery for the Endovascular Treatment of a Recurrent Vertebro-Vertebral Arteriovenous Fistula.

BACKGROUND: Vertebro-vertebral arteriovenous fistula (VVAVF) is a condition in which there is an arteriovenous shunt directly connecting the extracranial vertebral artery to the vertebral venous plexus. Many reports have described fistula occlusion or vertebral artery trapping as treatments for VVAVF. Here, we describe a case in which endovascular treatment for recurrent VVAVF using a transfemoral approach was unsuccessful; thus, the vertebral artery (VA) was directly punctured during open surgery and the treatment was successful. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient was a 47-year-old female who had

Traumatic Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Resulting from Posterior Communicating Artery Rupture.

Traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a common finding following head trauma, is usually a benign condition with a favorable outcome, seldom requiring surgical intervention. Unlike nontraumatic aneurysmal SAH, most cases of traumatic SAH occur in the sulci of the cerebral convexities, and only rarely arise at the base of the brain. Basal traumatic SAH can be life-threatening and is primarily associated with rupture of vertebrobasilar arteries. We herein present a rare case of basal traumatic SAH resulting from rupture of the posterior communicating artery (PCoA). A 77-year-old male was take

Stent-assisted Coil Embolization to Treat Extracranial Carotid Artery Aneurysm 13 Years after Endarterectomy: A Case Report.

Development of extracranial carotid artery aneurysm (ECCA) after carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is a rare complication, occurring in connection with <1% of all CEAs. The main causes are infection, suture failure, and degeneration of arterial wall or patch. The traditional treatment has been operative repair, which can present a significant technical challenge owing to reoperative neck inflammation and potential cranial nerve injuries. Here, we report a case of successful stent-assisted coil embolization for right noninfectious ECCA. A 63-year-old female was admitted to our hospital for a 3-cm pu
