The role of tidal range and seawater pollution in shaping mangrove biomass and carbon stocks.

Understanding the mechanisms that regulate carbon accumulation in mangrove ecosystems remains critical for supporting coastal climate-mitigation strategies. In this study, we integrate high-resolution airborne LiDAR data, sediment geochemistry, and hydrodynamic modeling to quantify the multi-scale controls on biomass and sediment carbon stabilization across 14 representative mangrove stands in subtropical and tropical China. Unlike previous regional assessments that emphasize latitudinal patterns, our approach focuses on how forest structural complexity, root-zone redox conditions, and hydrolo

Prevalence of neglected tropical diseases among migrants living in Europe: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Migration to Europe has intensified due to recent political conflicts, economic crises, and climate change, introducing an increased risk of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) within this population. While NTDs typically impact tropical regions, their presence among migrants in Europe presents a growing challenge, compounded by limited research in this area. This study provides the first meta-analysis on the prevalence of NTDs in migrants across European nations. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted focusing on studies that included NTD prevalence among mig

New tools to uncover old tricks: an update on the knowledge on the most successful invasive freshwater helminth, Schyzocotyle acheilognathi.

The Asian fish tapeworm (AFT), Schyzocotyle acheilognathi, is a highly invasive and pathogenic parasite of freshwater fishes, present on all continents except Antarctica. Globally, 310 + definitive fish host species have been recorded, with Mexico showing the highest number of reports. Here, we summarize the current knowledge about the biology, distribution, and ecological determinants of this parasite, highlighting key knowledge gaps that could guide future research. Considering Mexico has quite comprehensive records of this parasite (both in host and geographical terms), we propose that this

Ticks jump in a warmer world: Global distribution shifts of main pathogenic ticks are associated with future climate change.

In recent decades, the threats of ticks and tick-borne diseases (TBDs) increased extensively with environmental change, urbanization, and rapidly changing interactions between human and animals. However, large-scale distribution of tick and TBD risks as well as their relationship with environmental change remain inadequately unclear. Here, we first proposed a "tick-pathogen-habitat-human" model to project the global potential distribution of main pathogenic ticks using a total of 70,714 occurrence records. Meanwhile, the effects of ecological factors and socio-economic factors driving the dist

Increased thermal suitability elevates the risk of dengue transmission across the mid hills of Nepal.

The burden of climate-sensitive, mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue, has significantly increased in recent years. Understanding the temporal and spatial variations of these diseases is essential for effectively controlling potential outbreaks. In this study, we utilized Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite land surface temperature (LST) data (MOD11A2) and a temperature-dependent mechanistic model (R0) to predict the monthly suitability for dengue transmission in Nepal from 2001 to 2020 for both mosquito vectors, Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus. We divided the

Remote Sensing and Assessment of Compound Groundwater Flooding Using an End-to-End Wireless Environmental Sensor Network and Data Model at a Coastal Cultural Heritage Site in Portsmouth, NH.

The effects of climate change in the forms of rising sea levels and increased frequency of storms and storm surges are being noticed across many coastal communities around the United States. These increases are impacting the timing and frequency of tidal and rainfall influenced compound groundwater flooding events. These types of events can be exemplified by the recent and ongoing occurrence of groundwater flooding within building basements at the historic Strawbery Banke Museum (SBM) living history campus in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Fresh water and saline groundwater intrusion within baseme

Changes in wet bulb globe temperature and risk to heat-related hazards in Bangladesh.

The rise in temperatures and changes in other meteorological variables have exposed millions of people to health risks in Bangladesh, a densely populated, hot, and humid country. To better assess the threats climate change poses to human health, the wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) is an important indicator of human heat stress. This study utilized high-resolution reanalysis data from the fifth-generation European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF ERA5) to analyze the spatiotemporal changes in outdoor WBGT across Bangladesh from 1979 to 2021, employing Liljegren's model. The st

Psychosocial factors, psychological well-being and safety incidents among long-distance bus drivers in Ghana: A cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Commercial bus drivers account for most road traffic crashes and related mortality. The psychosocial working conditions of these drivers have been found precarious. However, road safety initiatives in Ghana still focus on correcting risky driving behaviours, ignoring the conditions under which these drivers operate. Hence, the purpose of this study was to examine whether psychosocial work factors can predict the psychological well-being and risky driving behaviours of long-distance bus drivers in Ghana. METHODS: This quantitative cross-sectional survey recruited 7315 long-distance

Elevated temperature exacerbates pharmaceutical-induced oxidative stress in zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae.

There is growing evidence that rising global temperatures resulting from climate change may exacerbate the toxic effect of pollutants and heterotherms, including fish, in which homestatic mechanisms are directly influenced by environmental temperature will be most affected. Pharmaceuticals discharged into the environment are potentially harmful to wildlife as many of their drug targets are conserved across divergent phyla. Oxidative stress (OS) is a major mechanism by which many pharmaceutical contaminants can induce toxicity but this has received little consideration in the context of effects

Exploring environmental and climate features associated with yellow fever across space and time in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest biome.

The Atlantic Forest Biome (AFB) creates an ideal environment for the proliferation of vector mosquitoes, such as Haemagogus and Sabethes species, which transmit the Yellow Fever virus (YFV) to both human and non-human primates (NHP) (particularly Alouatta sp. and Callithrix sp.). From 2016 to 2020, 748 fatal cases of YF in humans and 1,763 in NHPs were reported in this biome, following several years free from the disease. This underscores the imminent risk posed by the YFV. In this study, we examined the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of YF cases in both NHPs and humans across the entire

Rabies and the Arctic Fox (Vulpes lagopus): A Review.

The Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) is the primary infection reservoir of Arctic rabies, the dynamics of which are poorly understood and subject to significant spatiotemporal variation. Although rabies presence has been documented in the region since the mid-19th century, there is currently no evidence of rabies impacting Arctic fox population size. Under the influence of climate change in a rapidly evolving Arctic ecosystem, alterations in transmission dynamics are predicted, with implications for this species. Concurrently, the World Health Organization leads the United Against Rabies collective

Analysis of environmental factors influencing endemic cholera risks in sub-Saharan Africa.

The recurring cholera outbreaks in sub-Saharan Africa are of growing concern, especially considering the potential acceleration in the global trend of larger and more lethal cholera outbreaks due to the impacts of climate change. However, there is a scarcity of evidence-based research addressing the environmental and infrastructure factors that sustain cholera recurrence in Africa. This study adopts a statistical approach to investigate over two decades of endemic cholera outbreaks and their relationship with five environmental factors: water provision, sanitation provision, raising temperatur

The Role of Hsp70 in Adaptation to Adverse Conditions and Its Possible Medical Application.

In the present era of global warming and dramatically increased environmental pollution posing a threat to animal life, the understanding and manipulation of organisms' resources of stress tolerance is apparently a question of survival. Heat stress and other forms of stressful factors induce a highly organized response of organisms at the cellular level where heat shock proteins (Hsps) and in particular Hsp70 family of chaperones are among the major players in the protection from the environmental challenge. The present review article summarizes the peculiarities of the Hsp70 family of protein

Genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms reveal recurrent waves of speciation in niche-pockets, in Europe's most venomous snake.

Within the Balkan Peninsula, topographic and climatic agents have promoted biodiversity and shaped the speciation history of many ectotherms. Here, we targeted an iconic European reptile, the nose-horned viper species-complex (Vipera ammodytes), and explored its spatial and temporal evolution. We (i) utilized genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms to infer genetic structure and build a time-calibrated species-tree, and (ii) applied species distribution modelling with niche-divergence tests among major phylogenomic clades. Geographically structured genetic diversity was found. Cycles of re
