Scanning for the scanner: FMRI of audition by read-out omissions from echo-planar imaging.

Echo-planar imaging (EPI) generates considerable acoustic noise by rapidly oscillating gradients. In functional magnetic resonance imaging ( … In this particular case, read-out omissions from EPI were used to assert residual audition prior to cochlear implantation (CI). Requiring no specific task compliance or sophisticated stimulation equipment other than the scanner on its own, FMRI by read-out omissions lends itself to auditory investigations and to quickly probe audition.

[Diagnosis and therapy of auditory synaptopathy/neuropathy].

Pathological auditory brainstem responses (lack of responses, elevated thresholds and perturbed waveforms) in combination with present otoacoustic emissions are typical audiometric findings in patients with a hearing impairment that particularly affects speech comprehension or complete deafness. This heterogenous group of disorders first described as "auditory neuropathy" includes dysfunction of peripheral synaptic coding of sound by inner hair cells (synaptopathy) and/or of the generation and propagation of action potentials in the auditory nerve (neuropathy). This joint statement provides pr

Integration of High-Charge-Injection-Capacity Electrodes onto Polymer Softening Neural Interfaces.

Softening neural interfaces are implanted stiff to enable precise insertion, and they soften in physiological conditions to minimize modulus mismatch with tissue. In this work, a high-charge-injection-capacity iridium electrode fabrication process is detailed. For the first time, this process enables integration of iridium electrodes onto softening substrates using photolithography to define all features in the device. Importantly, no electroplated layers are utilized, leading to a highly scalable method for consistent device fabrication. The iridium electrode is metallically bonded to the gol

Postauricular Muscle Reflex as a Potential Objective Measure of Auditory Function in Normal-Hearing Adults.

This study aims to establish a protocol for measuring the postauricular muscle reflex (PAMR) and to characterize both short- and mid-latency responses under controlled conditions in adults with normal hearing. PAMR electromyography was recorded in 43 adults with normal hearing. Auditory stimuli (50 ms, 80-100 dB (A)) were presented at four frequencies (500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz), with systematic variation in stimulation side (ipsilateral/contralateral) and eye position (forward/rotated). The influence of these factors on PAMR amplitude and latency was analyzed using linear mixed-effects mod

Mechanistic study of HES1/PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway in cisplatin-induced sensorineural hearing loss.

Cisplatin-induced ototoxicity limits its clinical utility and may adversely impact cochlear implant outcomes. This study investigated the role of the HES1/PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling axis in cisplatin-evoked cytotoxicity in HEI-OC1 auditory cells. Our results demonstrated that cisplatin treatment significantly upregulated HMGB1/NLRP3-mediated inflammatory responses, as evidenced by increased protein levels of HMGB1 and NLRP3, along with elevated mRNA expression of TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β. Concurrently, cisplatin induced pronounced oxidative stress, characterized by elevated reactive oxygen species

Improvements induced by retinal gene therapy with voretigene neparvovec depend on visual cortical hemispheric dominance mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: RPE65-associated retinal degeneration (RPE65-RD) causes severe visual deficits. Gene therapy with AAV2-hRPE65v2 is a breakthrough but it is currently unknown which visual pathways benefit from treatment and if cortical mechanisms can amplify retinal improvements. METHODS: In this within-subject design, ten patients with biallelic RPE65-RD underwent sub-retinal injection of AAV2-hRPE65v2. Psychophysical full-field stimulus threshold determination and functional magnetic resonance imaging were performed before and 12 months after treatment. Population receptive fields (pRF) were com

Impact of visual and auditory deprivation on speech perception: an EEG study.

This study investigated the impact of auditory and visual deprivation on speech processing by analyzing auditory evoked potentials (MMN, P3a, P2, N2b) in congenitally blind individuals, cochlear implant (CI) users, and normal-hearing controls. Using a passive oddball paradigm with /u/ as the standard stimulus and /i/ and /y/ as deviants, we recorded and analyzed auditory evoked potentials in fronto-central and centro-parietal regions. Blind participants exhibited significantly faster MMN and N2b latencies than controls and CI users, reflecting enhanced auditory temporal resolution due to cross

Exploring sense of coherence (SOC) in relation to working conditions for employees with hearing loss.

BackgroundPeople with hearing loss (HL) report several challenging situations in working life (WL). HL can negatively affect, e.g., the ability to communicate, creating barriers and difficulties in WL. However, there is a lack of studies that investigates salutary aspects in relation to working conditions for the target group. Sense of Coherence (SOC) is a salutary concept widely used when investigating aspects in WL but is less explored in relation to HL.ObjectiveTo explore the concept of Sense of Coherence (SOC) in relation to working conditions for employees with HL.MethodsAn observational

The Effect of Speech Masking on the Human Subcortical Response to Continuous Speech.

Auditory masking-the interference of the encoding and processing of an acoustic stimulus imposed by one or more competing stimuli-is nearly omnipresent in daily life and presents a critical barrier to many listeners, including people with hearing loss, users of hearing aids and cochlear implants, and people with auditory processing disorders. The perceptual aspects of masking have been actively studied for several decades, and particular emphasis has been placed on masking of speech by other speech sounds. The neural effects of such masking, especially at the subcortical level, have been much

False belief understanding in deaf children: what are the difficulties?

Children with cochlear implants (CIs) demonstrate proficiency in verbal-story elicited-response (VS-ER) false-belief tasks, such as the Sally & Ann task, at a similar age as typically developing hearing children. However, they face challenges in non-verbal spontaneous-response (NV-SR) false-belief tasks, measured via looking times, which hearing infants typically pass by around 2 years of age, or earlier. The purpose of the present study was to examine whether these difficulties remain in a non-verbal-story elicited-response (NVS-ER) false-belief task, in which children are offered the opportu
