The right cerebral hemisphere: emotion, music, visual-spatial skills, body-image, dreams, and awareness.

Based on a review of numerous studies conducted on normal, neurosurgical and brain-injured individuals, the right cerebral hemisphere appears to be dominant in the perception and identification of environmental and nonverbal sounds; the analysis of geometric and visual space (e.g., depth perception, visual closure); somesthesis, stereognosis, the maintenance of the body image; the production of dreams during REM sleep; the perception of most aspects of musical stimuli; and the comprehension and expression of prosodic, melodic, visual, facial, and verbal emotion. When the right hemisphere is da

Attention deficit disorder in childhood.

Attention deficit disorder refers to a syndrome of pervasive inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity that is found in between 3 and 6 per cent of the population. It is commonly associated with conduct disorders and learning disabilities. The etiology of ADD is unknown, but family and adoption studies demonstrate an important role for genetic transmission. Pre- or postnatal central nervous system damage is suggested in only a few cases. Animal models as well as pharmacologic and clinical studies point to abnormalities in the catecholamine system, particularly dopamine function. Although cer

Minor tranquilizers in the treatment of aggression.

Clinical trials designed to evaluate the efficacy of drugs in human aggression have been scarce until recent years. The potential antiaggressive action of minor tranquilizers in humans has received little attention in spite of the claimed "taming effect" in some animal studies. A recent report examining the literature regarding the effects of benzodiazepines on animal models of aggressive behavior has pointed out the lack of consistency in such findings. Similar observations have been noted in humans where reduction in aggressive manifestations is contrasted with an increase in hostility in a

Attempting to disentangle the relationship between impulsivity and longitudinal self-harm: Epidemiological analysis of UK household survey data.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity may be an important risk factor in terms of future self-harm. However, the extent of this, whether it may relate to self-harm that is new in onset and/or repetition of self-harm, and the detail of any interaction with mood instability (MI) and childhood sexual abuse (CSA) requires detailed examination. AIMS: We used the 2000 Adult Psychiatry Morbidity Survey and an 18-month follow-up data to test hypotheses relating to the role of impulsivity, CSA and MI in the inception and persistence of self-harm. METHODS: We assessed associations of impulsivity with (1) suicidal s

Evening chronotype is associated with impulsivity and diminished resilience in bipolar disorder: Potential link with early life stressors may affect mood features and suicidal risk.

The study aimed at investigating the possible effects of early stressful experiences on chronotype and the clinical features associated with bipolar disorder (BD). A sample of 203 adults with BD depressive episode (mean age 46.7 + 13.5, females 57.1 %) was assessed by the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), the Early Trauma Inventory Self Report-Short Form (ETISR-SF), the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), the Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA), the Scale for Suicide Ideation (SSI) and the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS). ADHD: prevalence and effect on opioid use disorder treatment outcome in a French sample of patients receiving medication for opioid use disorder-the influence of impulsivity as a mediating factor.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorder (OUD) poses a global health challenge, and despite medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) and psychosocial interventions, relapse remains a significant concern. Comorbid psychiatric disorders, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are one of the major factors associated with poor OUD treatment outcome. We aimed to estimate the frequency of probable ADHD (in childhood and in adulthood) in patients with OUD; to assess the factors associated with this comorbidity; and to explore the factors that mediate the relationship between ADHD and OUD

Frontal Pole Neuromodulation for Impulsivity and Suicidality in Veterans With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Common Co-Occurring Mental Health Conditions: Protocol for a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Suicide remains a leading cause of death among veterans in the United States, and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) increases the risk of suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempts (SAs). mTBI worsens impulsivity and contributes to poor social and occupational functioning, which further increases the risk of SI and SAs. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation is a neuromodulatory treatment approach that induces neuroplasticity, potentially repairing neurodamage. Intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) is a second-generation form of transcranial magnetic stimulation that

Obsessive compulsive personality traits: Understanding the chain of pathogenesis from health to disease.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) is the most common personality disorder across the globe, and has been associated with heightened impulsivity and compulsivity. Examination of whether these findings extend to people with subsyndromal OCPD may shed light on pathogenic mechanisms contributing to the ultimate expression of full personality disorder. METHODS: Non-treatment seeking participants were recruited in the general community of two US cities, and completed a detailed clinical assessment, along with questionnaires and cognitive tests relating to impulsivity and

Trait and neurobiological underpinnings of negative emotion regulation in gambling disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gambling disorder is characterized by poor regulation of negative emotions and impulsive behaviours. This study aimed to (1) compare gambling disorder patients (GDPs) and healthy controls (HCs) in self-report and brain activation measures of emotion regulation; and (2) establish its relationship with negative emotion-driven impulsivity. DESIGN: Two cross-sectional case-control studies including GDPs and HCs. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: GDPs and HCs were recruited from specialized gambling clinics in Andalusia (Spain), where they were following out-patient treatment, and fr

BDNF concentrations and daily fluctuations differ among ADHD children and respond differently to methylphenidate with no relationship with depressive symptomatology.

RATIONALE: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) enhances the growth and maintenance of several monoamine neuronal systems, serves as a neurotransmitter modulator and participates in the mechanisms of neuronal plasticity. Therefore, BDNF is a good candidate for interventions in the pathogenesis and/or treatment response of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). OBJECTIVE: We quantified the basal concentration and daily fluctuation of serum BDNF, as well as changes after methylphenidate treatment. METHOD: A total of 148 children, 4-5 years old, were classified into groups as foll

Cognitive flexibility differentiates young adults exhibiting obsessive-compulsive behaviors from controls.

The National Institute of Mental Health has proposed a shift toward classifying clusters of disorders on the basis of underlying biomarkers and neurological correlates. The present study sought to determine whether cognitive flexibility represents one such construct underlying obsessive-compulsive behaviors (OCBs), a cluster of behaviors characteristic of OCD and other body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs), including trichotillomania, pathological skin picking, nail biting, and tic disorders. One-hundred and twenty-four undergraduate students completed the Depression Anxiety and Stress Sca

Exploring the links between the phenomenology of creativity and bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: The links between bipolar disorder (BD) and creativity have historically attracted academic and public interest. Previous research highlights common characteristics of people considered to be highly creative, and those diagnosed with BD, including extraversion, impulsivity, divergent thinking and high motivation (Ma, 2009). METHOD: In the first phenomenological study focussing on the links between creativity and extreme mood, an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach was used to collect and analyse in-depth interview data from seven people diagnosed with BD in the

Understanding the relationships between body esteem, risk for anorexia nervosa, and domain-dependent decision-making impulsivity in a college sample.

Impulsivity has been suggested to interact with low body esteem to elevate risk for anorexia nervosa. Discounting tasks are unique tools for examining impulsivity. Female college students (N=139) at varying levels of body esteem and risk for anorexia nervosa responded to discounting scenarios depicting opportunities to lose/gain weight and to worsen/improve complexion. Multiple regression analyses were used to examine the relationships between impulsivity and risk for anorexia nervosa and body esteem in four disorder-relevant decision-making contexts. Results indicated that lower decision-maki

The severity of ADHD and eating disorder symptoms: a correlational study.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders (ADHD) and eating disorders (ED) share several clinical features. Research on the association between ADHD and ED is still quite sparse and findings are ambiguous. METHODS: Correlations between the severity of ADHD key features (Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder-Self-Rating questionnaire) and the severity of specific ED symptoms (Structured Interview for Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa) were examined in 32 female patients diagnosed with ED. RESULTS: Most correlations between the severity of ADHD featur

High and low neurobehavior disinhibition clusters within locales: implications for community efforts to prevent substance use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of where substance use and other such behavioral problems frequently occur has aided policing, public health, and urban planning strategies to reduce such behaviors. Identifying locales characterized by high childhood neurobehavioral disinhibition (ND), a strong predictor of substance use and consequent disorder (SUD), may likewise improve prevention efforts. OBJECTIVES: The distribution of ND in 10-12-year olds was mapped to metropolitan Pittsburgh, PA, and tested for clustering within locales. METHODS: The 738 participating families represented the population in terms

The latent classes of subclinical ADHD symptoms: convergences of multiple informant reports.

The purpose of the present study was to conduct latent class analysis on the Hyperactivity scale of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire in order to identify distinct subgroups of subclinical ADHD in a multi-informant framework. We hypothesized a similar structure between teachers and parents, and differences in symptom severity across latent classes. Data was collected from a non-referred sample of children aged 8-13 years. We performed latent class analyses on parent (n = 383) and teacher (n = 391) ratings of the Hyperactivity scale items from both versions of the questionnaire. Thos
