Convolutional neural network in nasopharyngeal carcinoma: how good is automatic delineation for primary tumor on a non-contrast-enhanced fat-suppressed T2-weighted MRI?

PURPOSE: Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) show potential for delineating cancers on contrast-enhanced MRI (ce-MRI) but there are clinical scenarios in which administration of contrast is not desirable. We investigated performance of the CNN for delineating primary nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) on non-contrast-enhanced images and compared the performance to that on ce-MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed primary NPC in 195 patients using a well-established CNN, U-Net, for tumor delineation on the non-contrast-enhanced fat-suppressed (fs)-T2W, ce-T1W and ce-fs-T1W images

Automatic classification of canine thoracic radiographs using deep learning.

The interpretation of thoracic radiographs is a challenging and error-prone task for veterinarians. Despite recent advancements in machine learning and computer vision, the development of computer-aided diagnostic systems for radiographs remains a challenging and unsolved problem, particularly in the context of veterinary medicine. In this study, a novel method, based on multi-label deep convolutional neural network (CNN), for the classification of thoracic radiographs in dogs was developed. All the thoracic radiographs of dogs performed between 2010 and 2020 in the institution were retrospect

Automatic segmentation of gadolinium-enhancing lesions in multiple sclerosis using deep learning from clinical MRI.

Gadolinium-enhancing lesions reflect active disease and are critical for in-patient monitoring in multiple sclerosis (MS). In this work, we have developed the first fully automated method to segment and count the gadolinium-enhancing lesions from routine clinical MRI of MS patients. The proposed method first segments the potential lesions using 2D-UNet from multi-channel scans (T1 post-contrast, T1 pre-contrast, FLAIR, T2, and proton-density) and classifies the lesions using a random forest classifier. The algorithm was trained and validated on 600 MRIs with manual segmentation. We compared th

A potential method for sex estimation of human skeletons using deep learning and three-dimensional surface scanning.

Deep learning based on radiological methods has attracted considerable attention in forensic anthropology because of its superior classification capacities over human experts. However, radiological instruments are limited in their nature of high cost and immobility. Here, we integrated a deep learning algorithm and three-dimensional (3D) surface scanning technique into a portable system for pelvic sex estimation. Briefly, the images of the ventral pubis (VP), dorsal pubis (DP), and greater sciatic notch (GSN) were cropped from virtual pelvic samples reconstructed from CT scans of 1000 individu

Novel approach for electromyography-controlled prostheses based on facial action.

Individuals with severe tetraplegia frequently require to control their complex assistive devices using body movement with the remaining activity above the neck. Electromyography (EMG) signals from the contractions of facial muscles enable people to produce multiple command signals by conveying information about attempted movements. In this study, a novel EMG-controlled system based on facial actions was developed. The mechanism of different facial actions was processed using an EMG control model. Four asymmetric and symmetry actions were defined to control a two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) pros

Supervised and unsupervised language modelling in Chest X-Ray radiological reports.

Chest radiography (CXR) is the most commonly used imaging modality and deep neural network (DNN) algorithms have shown promise in effective triage of normal and abnormal radiograms. Typically, DNNs require large quantities of expertly labelled training exemplars, which in clinical contexts is a major bottleneck to effective modelling, as both considerable clinical skill and time is required to produce high-quality ground truths. In this work we evaluate thirteen supervised classifiers using two large free-text corpora and demonstrate that bi-directional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) networks

Improved automatic detection of herpesvirus secondary envelopment stages in electron microscopy by augmenting training data with synthetic labelled images generated by a generative adversarial network.

Detailed analysis of secondary envelopment of the herpesvirus human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is crucial for understanding the formation of infectious virions. Here, we present a convolutional neural network (CNN) that automatically recognises cytoplasmic capsids and distinguishes between three HCMV capsid envelopment stages in TEM images. 315 TEM images containing 2,610 expert-labelled capsids of the three classes were available for CNN training. To overcome the limitation of small training datasets and thus poor CNN performance, we used a deep learning

Nucleus and cytoplasm-based segmentation and actor-critic neural network for acute lymphocytic leukaemia detection in single cell blood smear images.

Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), which is due to the malfunctioning in the bone marrow, is common among people all over the world. The haematologist suffers a lot to discriminate the presence of leukaemia in the patients using the blood smears. To overcome the inaccuracy and reliability issues, this paper proposes an automatic method of leukaemia detection, named chronological Sine Cosine Algorithm-based actor-critic neural network (Chrono-SCA-ACNN). Initially, the blood smear images are segmented using the proposed entropy-based hybrid model, from which the image-level features and statis

A Cascaded Deep Convolutional Neural Network for Joint Segmentation and Genotype Prediction of Brainstem Gliomas.

GOAL: Automatic segmentation of brainstem gliomas and prediction of genotype (H3 K27M) mutation status based on magnetic resonance (MR) images are crucial but challenging tasks for computer-aided diagnosis in neurosurgery. In this paper, we present a novel cascaded deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to address these two challenging tasks simultaneously. METHODS: Our novel segmentation task contains two feature-fusion modules: the Gaussian-pyramid multiscale input features-fusion technique and the brainstem-region feature enhancement. The aim is to resolve very difficult problems in brain

Assessing Deep and Shallow Learning Methods for Quantitative Prediction of Acute Chemical Toxicity.

Animal-based methods for assessing chemical toxicity are struggling to meet testing demands. In silico approaches, including machine-learning methods, are promising alternatives. Recently, deep neural networks (DNNs) were evaluated and reported to outperform other machine-learning methods for quantitative structure-activity relationship modeling of molecular properties. However, most of the reported performance evaluations relied on global performance metrics, such as the root mean squared error (RMSE) between the predicted and experimental values of all samples, without considering the impact

Learnable despeckling framework for optical coherence tomography images.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a prevalent, interferometric, high-resolution imaging method with broad biomedical applications. Nonetheless, OCT images suffer from an artifact called speckle, which degrades the image quality. Digital filters offer an opportunity for image improvement in clinical OCT devices, where hardware modification to enhance images is expensive. To reduce speckle, a wide variety of digital filters have been proposed; selecting the most appropriate filter for an OCT image/image set is a challenging decision, especially in dermatology applications of OCT where a diff

Automated Identification of Diabetic Retinopathy Using Deep Learning.

PURPOSE: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness globally. Performing retinal screening examinations on all diabetic patients is an unmet need, and there are many undiagnosed and untreated cases of DR. The objective of this study was to develop robust diagnostic technology to automate DR screening. Referral of eyes with DR to an ophthalmologist for further evaluation and treatment would aid in reducing the rate of vision loss, enabling timely and accurate diagnoses. DESIGN: We developed and evaluated a data-driven deep learning algorithm as a novel diag

Detection of Nocturnal Scratching Movements in Patients with Atopic Dermatitis Using Accelerometers and Recurrent Neural Networks.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition affecting both children and adults and is associated with pruritus. A method for objectively quantifying nocturnal scratching events could aid in the development of therapies for atopic dermatitis and other pruritic disorders. High-resolution wrist actigraphy (three-dimensional accelerometer sensors sampled at 20 Hz) is a noninvasive method to record movement. This paper presents an algorithm to detect nocturnal scratching events based on actigraphy data. The twofold process consists of segmenting the data into "no motion," "single han

Automatic modeling of pectus excavatum corrective prosthesis using artificial neural networks.

Pectus excavatum is the most common deformity of the thorax. Pre-operative diagnosis usually includes Computed Tomography (CT) to successfully employ a thoracic prosthesis for anterior chest wall remodeling. Aiming at the elimination of radiation exposure, this paper presents a novel methodology for the replacement of CT by a 3D laser scanner (radiation-free) for prosthesis modeling. The complete elimination of CT is based on an accurate determination of ribs position and prosthesis placement region through skin surface points. The developed solution resorts to a normalized and combined outcom
