How Does Family Communication Relate to Adolescent Dating Violence and Externalizing Behaviors? The Role of Parent-Adolescent Risk Communication and Attitudes toward Violence in a Nicaraguan Sample.

Family plays a critical role for adolescent socialization. Parents in particular can promote either adolescent prosocial or problem behaviors. The purpose of the present study is two-fold. The first is to investigate the main and interaction effects of family communication (i.e., verbal hostility and expressiveness) on adolescent risk behaviors (i.e., dating violence and externalizing behaviors). The second is to test whether family communication is indirectly associated with adolescent risk behaviors through parent-adolescent risk communication and adolescent attitudes toward violence. Nicara…

Contextual influences of parenting behaviors for children with neurodevelopmental disorders: results from a Canadian national survey.

PURPOSE: This population-based study examined correlates of three parenting behaviors (positive interactions, consistency, and ineffective parenting) that have been shown to differ in children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), with and without externalizing behavior problems (EBPs), as compared to children with neither condition. METHOD: The sample of children aged 4-11 (N = 14,226) was drawn from the Canadian National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY). Analyses examined the associations of child, parental, and social context factors with parenting behaviors, and wheth

Further evidence of association between behavioral inhibition and social anxiety in children.

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to examine psychopathological correlates of behavioral inhibition in young offspring of parents with panic disorder and/or major depression. METHOD: Behavioral inhibition, determined by using standard laboratory observations, was assessed in four groups of children (age 2-6 years): 129 children of parents with both panic disorder and major depression, 22 children of parents with panic disorder alone, 49 children of parents with major depression alone, and 84 comparison children of parents with neither panic disorder nor major depression. Psychopathology in childr

Neurocognitive outcomes of children with non-syndromic single-suture craniosynostosis.

While the focus of craniosynostosis surgery is to improve head shape, neurocognitive sequelae are common and are incompletely understood. Neurodevelopmental problems that children with craniosynostosis face include cognitive and language impairments, motor delays or deficits, learning disabilities, executive dysfunction, and behavioral problems. Studies have shown that children with multiple suture craniosynostosis have more impairment than children with single-suture craniosynostosis. Children with isolated single-suture subtypes of craniosynostosis such as sagittal, metopic, and unicoronal c

A primer on early childhood obesity and parental influence.

Childhood obesity is a common health problem facing U.S. children with an increasing prevalence particularly in certain populations. Recognizing obesity in children is a clinical determination with specific measures that can indicate potential future associated health problems, but parental perception of overweight and/or obesity is influenced by other conditions. This primer offers a brief synopsis of parental influence in the etiology of early childhood obesity beginning with parameters of obesity and how it is operationalized through measurement. The importance of parental perceptions of th

Culturally syntonic family therapy for migrant Puerto Ricans.

Puerto Ricans and other Hispanics have traditionally used the nuclear and extended family as vital support systems to deal with stress. Some Puerto Rican migrant families living in the United States have been suspected of being at high risk for mental health problems precisely because they lack extended family supports. Working together as bilingual co-therapists, the authors found that a systems-oriented family therapy approach is effective and syntonic with the culture of Hispanic migrants. They provide a clinical vignette and warn therapists about the potential problems in differentiating d

Associations Between Genetic Risk for Adult Suicide Attempt and Suicidal Behaviors in Young Children in the US.

IMPORTANCE: Suicide rates have been increasing among youth in the US. While the heritability of suicide risk is well established, there is limited understanding of how genetic risk is associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors in young children. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether genetic susceptibility to suicide attempts (SAs) is associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This case-control study examined data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, a population-based longitudinal study of 11 878 US children enrolled

Procrastination, Perfectionism, and Other Work-Related Mental Problems: Prevalence, Types, Assessment, and Treatment-A Scoping Review.

Work-related mental problems can be defined as behaviors, emotions and cognitions that impede the successful completion of a task in a given time frame, i. e., the difficulty or inability to achieve important work-related goals. They are highly prevalent but have been neglected in psychology in general and as a target of psychotherapy in particular. Although work-related problems do not represent a mental disorder per se, they are associated with severe distress and high psychosocial costs. In this article, the prevalence of work-related problems, associated burden, diagnostic assessment and t

Maternal and neonatal behavior.

Maternal and neonatal behavior differs among food-producing mammals, and our management must reflect these differences. Sows will show more elaborate preparturient behavior than the other species as they attempt to build a nest that will last for several days. Because the nest is the focal point of maternal behavior for several days, the sow does not need to recognize her piglets until they are about 1 week of age. Although this facilitates the fostering of piglets between litters, the teat order developed by piglets during the first day or two makes it difficult for alien piglets to suckle wh

Characteristics of older adult problem gamblers calling a gambling helpline.

BACKGROUND: Few investigations have characterized groups of older adults with gambling problems, and published reports are currently limited by small samples of older adult problem gamblers. Gambling helplines represent a widespread mechanism for assisting problem gamblers to move into treatment settings. Given data from older adult problem gamblers in treatment, we hypothesized that older as compared with younger adult problem gamblers calling a gambling helpline would be less likely to report gambling-related problems. DESIGN AND METHODS: Logistic regression analyses were performed on data

Maternal posttraumatic stress symptoms, parenting stress, and child psychological and cognitive outcomes among Syrian refugee mother-child dyads in Türkiye: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Refugee children exposed to war and forced displacement are at elevated risk for emotional, behavioral, and cognitive difficulties. However, child outcomes may be shaped not only by direct trauma exposure but also by the psychological functioning of caregivers and stress within the parent-child relationship. The present mixed-methods study examined whether parenting stress was associated with the relationship between maternal posttraumatic stress symptoms and child psychological and cognitive outcomes among Syrian refugee families living in Mardin, Türkiye. [Management of obesity in schoolchildren and adolescents].

Pediatric obesity is a pathological process explained by genetic susceptibility, inappropriate diet, sedentary life patterns, and other environmental factors. It is related with psychological disturbances and chronic diseases in childhood or later in adulthood. Obesity prevention must start early in life and requires lifestyle multicomponent intervention (diet, physical activity and behavior), include children, family, and community, and offered in the primary health care service by the healthcare staff (physicians, nurses, dietists, and psychologists). Obesity treatment may include in additio

Psychosocial Consequences of Bariatric Surgery: Two Sides of a Coin: a Scoping Review.

This scoping review summarizes current evidence with regard to the impact of bariatric surgery on psychological health in adults with obesity. While a large body of evidence reports major metabolic benefit and improved quality of life, there is also ample evidence suggesting an increased incidence of self-harming behavior, a greater likelihood of developing an alcohol problem and higher rates of completed suicide among bariatric patients. Being able to identify the "at risk" patient population requires more longitudinal research into the risk factors for psychological complications after baria

Understanding the Relationship Between Subjective Wellbeing and Gambling Behavior.

This paper examines the relationship between gambling behavior and subjective wellbeing. It is often asserted that populations consist of different types of gamblers: those for whom gambling is a harmless leisure activity and those (pathological/problem gamblers) for whom the activity has harmful effects. One might, therefore, assume that subjective wellbeing will be negativity associated with an individual's level of gambling addiction. Alternatively, gamblers may choose to gamble because they derive utility from participating in this activity and so the relationship between happiness and gam

A Three-Year Emotional Intelligence Intervention to Reduce Adolescent Aggression: The Mediating Role of Unpleasant Affectivity.

Adolescents' aggressive behavior is a growing social problem with important implications for psychosocial adjustment. The teaching of emotional skills has an important impact on reducing aggression in schools. However, little scientific evidence has shown the explanatory mechanism through which this training reduces aggression during adolescence. This article aims to provide evidence for the effectiveness of a 3-year longitudinal intervention among adolescents in nine Spanish schools. A total of 476 adolescents participated. Results showed a reduction in physical and verbal aggression in Time

Exploring the factors associated with youth homelessness and arrests.

PROBLEM: The high rate of arrests among homeless youths has stimulated a growing interest in uncovering the factors associated with police involvement in this population. This study explored external factors related to their arrests. METHOD: This secondary analysis involved 186 homeless youths. The difference between youths who reported arrests and those who did not was examined based on the following variables: economic status, meaningful activity, involvement with other homeless peers, mental illness, and drug use. FINDINGS: The results of this study showed a significant association betwee

[Care continuity for patients with eating disorder during transition from childhood to adulthood].

Eating disorder is mainly seen at the younger woman. In recent years, there has been a growing population of younger or elder women. In children, most of the eating disorder is anorexia nervosa(AN), but if eating disorders are prolonged, these switched over to ANBP and bulimia nervosa(BN). When a psychological problem becomes bigger that abnormal eating behavior and psychiatric disorder stand out at ANBP and BN, we can't answer as the pediatrics, and it's taken over psychiatry and the department of psychosomatic medicine. Because ego and the women's establishment and the lifestyle are related

The Family Check-Up in early childhood: a case study of intervention process and change.

This article describes a case study in the use of the Family Check-Up (FCU), a family-based and ecological preventive intervention for children at risk for problem behavior. The FCU is an assessment-driven intervention that utilizes a health maintenance model; emphasizes motivation for change; and offers an adaptive, tailored approach to intervention. This case study follows one Caucasian family through their initial assessment and subsequent treatment for their toddler daughter's conduct problems over a 2-year period. Clinically meaningful improvements in child and family functioning were fou…

A controlled social skills training for children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) have significant social skills deficits. The efficacy of a child friendship training (CFT) versus a delayed treatment control (DTC) was assessed for 100 children ages 6 to 12 years with FASD. Children in the CFT showed clear evidence of improvement in their knowledge of appropriate social behavior, and according to parent report, CFT resulted in improved social skills and fewer problem behaviors compared with DTC. Gains were maintained at 3-month follow-up. After receiving treatment, the DTC group exhibited similar improvement. Teachers did…

An update on obsessive-compulsive disorder.

It is now recognized that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) affects almost 3% of the world's population and is a major worldwide health problem. Much has been learned in the past 2 decades about the treatment of these disorders. Recent developments in neuroimaging techniques have led to a better understanding of the biology of OCD and the brain circuits that may be involved in the production of symptoms. The most effective treatment approaches, based on controlled data, are behavior therapy consisting of exposure and response prevention and specific medications. Although controversial, more
