Residual virulence is a major drawback in current Brucella vaccines. Live vaccines induce abortions in pregnant animals. Hence, a novel anti-Brucella vaccine was developed utilizing rough Salmonella delivering four Brucella antigens. In 1958--1974 altogether 110 cases of listeriosis were diagnosed in Sweden by culture. 64 cases were seen in children and adults. Of these, 52 had manifestations of meningoencephalitis and 10 of septicemia. Another 46 cases were seen in pregnant women and/or their neonates. Pregnancy ended in abortions in 8 cases and in stillborns in 3. METHODS: This is a retrospective study covering the period of one year, from January 1 to December 31 2007. The setting for this study was the Maternity Issaka Gazobi, a tertiary maternity referral centre in the city of Niamey, Niger.
