Validity of Single Question for Screening Intimate Partner Violence among Urban Latina Women.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to test the validity of a single violence question compared with revised Conflict Tactics Scales (CTS2) as an initial tool which can be easily used in community-based health care settings to detect IPV in Latina women. DESIGN AND SAMPLE: The study was conducted using secondary analyses of the baseline data from a culturally tailored HIV risk prevention project SEPA. A total of 657 Mexican and Puerto-Rican women aged 18-40, who reported sexual activities were interviewed. MEASURES: We used data regarding sociodemographic factors, Latino acculturation, …

Transnationalism, parenting, and child disciplinary practices of African immigrants in Alberta, Canada.

Child discipline remains a topic of public health interest across the globe. Despite this enduring interest, very little is known about the child disciplinary practices of African immigrants in Canada. This paper explores the disciplinary practices of African immigrant parents in Alberta, a Canadian province with a recent surge in the population of African immigrants. Employing a critical ethnographic methodology, informed by transnational theory, we collected data through in-depth qualitative interviews with a purposive sample of African community leaders (n = 14), African immigrant parents (

Adapting CBT for traumatized refugees and ethnic minority patients: examples from culturally adapted CBT (CA-CBT).

In this article, we illustrate how cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be adapted for the treatment of PTSD among traumatized refugees and ethnic minority populations, providing examples from our treatment, culturally adapted CBT, or CA-CBT. CA-CBT has a unique approach to exposure (typical exposure is poorly tolerated in these groups), emphasizes the treatment of somatic sensations (a particularly salient part of the presentation of PTSD in these groups), and addresses comorbid anxiety disorders and anger. To accomplish these treatment goals, CA-CBT emphasizes emotion exposure and emotion

Female genital mutilation. Female circumcision. Who is at risk in the U.S.?

Female genital mutilation/female circumcision (FGM/FC) refers to a group of traditional practices that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for cultural, religious, or other non-therapeutic reasons. These practices are usually performed by a nonmedical practitioner in the home or other nonclinical setting. Complications occurring immediately after the practice as well as those encountered months and years afterward can result in disability or premature death. In 1996 Congress directed the Department of Health and Human S

Sexual risk during initial months in US among Latina young adults.

Latina young adults are disproportionately at risk for sexually transmitted infections (e.g., HIV). However, little is known about social and cultural factors contributing to sexual health disparities among young adult Latina recent immigrants. The present study examined social and cultural factors contributing to sexual risk behaviors among 530 Latina women (ages 18-23) who immigrated to Miami-Dade County, Florida, approximately 12 months before assessment. At the cultural/macrosystemic level, participants who reported more sexual risk behaviors tended to (a) be less acculturated; (b) use les

Communication Anxiety and Bicultural Engagement in Relation to Parenting Efficacy Among Chinese Marriage Migrant Women in Korea: The Mediating Role of Parenting Stress.

This study examined the relationships among communication anxiety, bicultural engagement, parenting stress, and parenting efficacy among Chinese marriage migrant women living in Korea, with particular attention to the mediating role of parenting stress. However, few validate … rrelated with the depression scale (full sample r = 0.28, p < 0.001) and weakly correlated with the acculturation scale (full sample r = 0.15, p = 0.008). Confirmatory factor analyses yielded further support for a one-factor solution. Modified Prolonged Exposure Therapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder with an 85-Year-Old Native American Cajun Man With Late-Onset Deafness: A Case Report.

OBJECTIVES: Few studies of exposure therapy with adults 85 years and older exist. This case report presents results of prolonged exposure (PE) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) modified for an 85-year-old Native American Cajun man with late-onset deafness, who used a cochlear implant, and reported high Western/non-Native American acculturation. The following modifications were made primarily in response to the client's individual, disability-related barriers to completing the standard PE protocol: (a) inclusion of the client's spouse in aspects of treatment planning and homework assignm…

OBJECTIVE: The present study was a prospective investigation of baseline influences on initial smoking and transition to established smoking … shed smoking. Students of Korean ethnicity were more likely to become established smokers. However, acculturation was not a significant predictor of experimentation or established smoking after accounting for the effects of other predictors. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest a need for efforts to prevent smoking uptake among Asian American college students.

Immigration Factors and Monitoring of Chronic Hepatitis B Infection Among Foreign-Born: The FOCUS-HBV Multicentre Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Immigrants are the largest subgroup living with chronic hepatitis B (HBV) infection in the United States. It is not well understood how immigration and associated social and cultural factors impact adherence to HBV monitoring. METHODS: We conducted a multicentre multilingual survey among foreign-born adults with chronic HBV between 7/2021 and 4/2023. Participants were surveyed regarding (1) immigration factors, (2) acculturation and language preferences, (3) social determinants of health and (4) HBV-related clinical factors.
